or
"4 games in 1: Rampage, Gauntlet, Joust and Defender"

Aldi will be selling these on the 31st of October

Cocoon 3D Printer $299

It's here again. A 3d printer from a supermarket.

"Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF)"
"Build volume 120x135x100mm"
"Magnetic printing mat"

In the previous year, this has been met with good reviews. But that's probably because its a rebadged one of these.

Good local price and supported by Aldi's returns policy makes it a good product for entry-level 3d printing.

These use LCDs so a real lightgun wont work, IR tracking is an option but even in commercial arcade cabs it's not as good.

A softmodded PS2 (Free MC Boot), old CRT TV and a guncon will let you play Time crisis 2, 3, crisis zone and a buch of other gun games (virtual cop 1+2 etc) really well. I set up a PS2 fat with internal HDD mostly for lightgun games, can also load games from a network share on a PS2 slim.

      • Oh right thanks

What is free mc boot? Is softmod like installing a chip?

Also will it work with plasma tv?

And how did you end up getting the gun? And also the time crisis games

        Thanks

        • +6

It's a modified memory card that allows you to run unsigned code on a PS2, such as OPL (open PS2 loader) which lets you run games from network share or internal HDD on a Fat PS2 + network adaptor.
More similar to modern console softmods than a modchip, in that it exploits a flaw in the way the ps2 loads code (eg the dvd player update for launch ps2s) from PS2 memory card, using software not a chip soldered onto the motherboard to do the work.

Actual light guns wont work with plasma or LCD, only older CRTs as they gun ties into the vertical (and on guncons, horizontal for greater accuracy) sync of the video signal.

Guncon 1 and 2 are just namco's ps1/ps2 lightguns, most ps2 guncon games work with the original guncon but some need the extra buttons of the guncon2. I bought mine from cashies webshop, they come up fairly often.

Games can be obtained from various places which probably should not be discussed here.

It's really not similar to these 'arcade' cabinets, just a good way to play a lot of the old lightgun games I love :)

      • Wouldn't mind doing a switch version similar to this.

  • Do they come fully assembled

    • doesn't appear to be - they are flat packed and takes 30-45 minutes to assemble based on youtube reviews

      • Phew, was thinking how the hell was I going to take this from there.

        • according to catalogue, it weighs 32 kg.

  • +2

1.2 meters high.. These things are tiny :(

    • Squat. What do you expect for $499?

      • +13

        An extra .6 meters

        • Hehe, ah! Can't have everything.

Re the printer, I ended up returning this model last year. The printed objects kept peeling away from the bed during printing. I tried multiple print speeds, various temperatures and different print bases but the objects wouldn't always stick. I believe that it needed a heated bed. These can be installed afterwards but I figured it would invalidate the warranty (in addition to the extra cost), so it didn't seem worthwhile.

    • +11

I had the same problems, I fixed it by:
      * Using blue painters tape on the print bed
      * Printing with rafts, with a base line width of 1mm, a raft base print speed of 10mm/s, and raft print speed of 20mm/s

After this I haven't any problems with it peeling or lifting during prints

I will buy this game and leave it for my great grand grand son as heritage. Surely this will worth heaps 100 years later.

    • Why do you think that, it's not like it's an "original" arcade machine.

    • -1

You'd be better off buying the original cabinet, which you can get for about 1k. This is basically an officially licensed MAME/retropie cabinet. Its quite expensive for what it is, but I acknowledge that this is because its officially licensed.

      • I was bemused then.

  • +3

Will probably head along to my local ALDI just to watch the fights that ensue over these machines.

    • +4

I'll just wait till after the sale and people realise how tiny they are and sell them all over FB and Gumtree :)

      • Same. I'm not in the target market for these, but would love to get a couple for hacking. And there WILL be plenty of buyers' regret on these.

At full price, they don't represent good value to me (need to replace the buttons, microswitches, joysticks, game board etc) but at $150 for a secondhand one one Gumtree I'll probably snap-up a couple.

        • Probably just like the NES classic, which you can now pick up for about $60, down from about $250 or whatever scalpers were selling it for. Nostalgia noobs will buy it, play a bit of streeties on it and then lament that it does take up a bit of room around the house.

        • Youd be hard up 😂😂

  • There is an arcade forum that talks about these and they r cheep tiny a lot of problems all the people that have one said they should have paid a bit extra for the real thing not a toy
They also come flat paced for assembly

Can't beat converting an old arcade cabinet. I have a Neo Geo cab (LAI cab) which I converted about 15 years ago running a PC with JAMMA adapter board (J Pac) and MAME. Keeps that old school feel with the original CRT screen. One day I'll throw a RPi in it.

    • I'm also a fan of original arcade machines (fave in my collection is near-mint "Big Red" NeoGeo MV6 6-slot LAI cabinet).

But have you tried to lug an old school arcade machine up 2 or 3 flights of stairs in a family home? Ever looked at the power draw of those machines. The mini cabinets have a particular market in mind. And you're not in it. ;-)

      • I have, many times. It isn't fun. I have 5 of them. One of them is 4 player and doesn't fit through most doors. I still love them.

  • +1

Not a big fan of those games. If it had any of Double Dragon, Dragon Ninja, Shinobi, R-Type, Wonderboy etc.. I would have been up there waiting now. However, I'll probably still get one for the kids.

  • +1

be great christmas present for kids, unplayable standing for adults thought you will need to sit on a chair, and not sure if you going to be able to fit 3 people around a 17inch screen playing gauntlet comfortably..

    • They'll also be selling a riser stand if you don't want a hunch back and/or don't want to sit down to play.

      • Is that confirmed? I wouldn't buy one without a riser but I wasn't sure if they were selling them too

  • 17” screen is not that great?

    • Perfectly sharp and bright enough for displaying upscaled 30+ year old games.

      • -1

That would have played on large arcade machine screens anyway.

      • Just thought the original arcade cabinets had bigger screens so a bigger then 17” would have been nicer

        • My cabs are 27 - 29" monitors so yes, a lot bigger.

  • +1

    I'd get a Ms. Pac Man/Galaga/Elevator Action/Double Dragon version in a heartbeat.

    • Me too. That version of DD has co-op.

      • Ohhh I wish Aldi had Double Dragon

    • +1

      1. Elevator Action.
        Double Dragon.
        Pang.
        Galaga.

      That’s all I need.

  • I hope those control sticks and buttons are easy to replace.

    • +2

The buttons are, but the control sticks will need drilling under the control panel (sanwa joysticks have their screws in slightly different spots)

  • I bought a Ender 3 3d printer off ebay last week for $250 aud, has heat bed, and nearly double in every dimension 235x235x250mm, but does require a bit of assembly. Can anyone comment on the Aldi printer plastic?

    • +2

Yours will be much more useful, this Aldi one can only print PLA since it lacks a heated bed. If you mean the filament, supposedly it's good but you can get cheaper online if you don't mind the wait for shipping. $30 on eBay gets you ESUN tough PLA, which is great stuff, for example. I just wait for the Aldi filament to go on clearance personally (haven't yet used the roll I bought though).

I'd suggest anyone serious about printing wait for the full sized Aldi printer (rebadged Wanhou i3 Plus) or look at something like the Ender 3.

Leave these in the past guys.

Nostalgia only goes so far, considering you can play the same games on a big screen, sitting down on the lounge, with decent audio to boot.
I have very fond memories of hanging out at the arcade, but if you think your kids are going to like standing up and playing this thing looking down on a small screen I have news for you.

This is going to take up a lot of real estate and collect dust. All so you can impress your mates for about 30min when they come over for drinkies.

Get an emulator, and set up 100's of these old school games at a press of a button.

Don't be tempted by nostalgia. Think about what else $500 can buy you!

    • +1

this exactly, its a short term gimmick which is not practical. you could easily plug an old spare pc into a cheap large screen tv (or old school crt with appropriate inputs) and get the same feeling for much less. heck most consoles come with retro game packs now.

    • +1

      You speak good sense.

But it's the idea of going into the garage, playing darts, ping pong and playing this thing as well, with beer having a good time with the garage door open on hot summer nights.

Chill setup where it's not in the lounge room for some dumb fun.

I think it has its place.

      • Yeah every time I get tempted to buy one of these or build my own cabinet I come to this same conclusion. I think a better idea is just to make a custom 2 player fight stick and decorate it with graphics from one of the classic machines.

      • thats 100% true, but i dont know many people with that setup anymore (lots of free space, garage etc). maybe when i was younger in uni days, not so much after starting ft work + relationships

      • +6

And thats how they sell you the hammock that you never lie in, the barbecue that you never use, the jacuzzi that even the birds dont drink from anymore and the SUV that touches nothing but tarmac. All for a lifestyle that never materialises no matter how much we chase it. Even if you do fancy yourself the entertainer, this thing just isnt going to hold anyones attention for very long.

The thing is, this machine isnt even intended for hard core streeties fans. Those guys would already have an arcade stick hooked up to their Xbox One and would be playing Marvel vs Capcom whatever. This is for people who faintly remember playing SF2 back in the day but are unlikely to play it for very long. Its trading purely on nostalgia.

I have a real cocktail table from the 80s and I love it to bits, because its a genuine piece of video game history. It has clicky microswitches, the original, patinated 80s decals. Imagine all the 20c pieces it would have sucked up, and all the people who would have come into contact with it.

Plus a genuine full size cabinet exudes an ambience that can't be matched by this midget version.

        • Great post!

        • I have the setup above (albeit in a games room not garage), and our group of friends catch up around once a week for bevys and snes or pool, often playing SF2 for hours on end. This would make it all the more enjoyable as having the TV with the snes mini just isn't the same.

I can however see that the above wouldn't be the case for the majority.

Note: Yes, I'm married and have a full time job.

          • @Rusty4: Why have you got a game room and still only using a SNES mini? It adds around 4 frames of lag compared to original hardware and a CRT screen:-

            https://www.reddit.com/r/miniSNES/comments/7x0man/snes_class…

Buy the original cart for 600 yen or so from Japan:-

            https://item.mercari.com/jp/m28417497966/

and then play it on native hardware (ie a Super Famicom, you can find one for around 20 bucks). It will still be better than this cabinet, which like the SNES mini still uses software emulation rather than native hardware (and therefore lags).

            • @cannedhams: I actually have an original snes and a bunch of games also, I just like hackchi on the snes mini, saves some inputs of the tv!

    • Good post.

Will probably spend more time building it than playing it.

    • What would be the best controllers to get to play with an emulator?

      • A wired xbox controller will do. There are four face buttons, ideally you would rather have 6 for SF2. You can map two buttons to the shoulder buttons, or alternatively, you can get a sabrent or similar with 6 face buttons.

You can either play the SNES or Sega Genesis rom, or alternatively the arcade rom using MAME or similar.

        • Good one, thanks;

FYI Street Fighter 2 rom is 1.4megs. You can email it lol

I agree with the above it overcharging way to much just for some wood and chips, the arcade cabinets should be no more than $200 it’s the licence and markup.

    • not the same machine- this one has 3 controllers (for Gauntlet)

Came for the free arcade machine. Disappointed.

    • i was the same too, when i read it as "FREE…"

How about just 4 play…. er

  • Hard pass. Single game units, not full height and pretty expensive. Would prefer to put the money towards someones home made Mame cabinet which will play all the games under the sun.

  • +2

In case you feel like playing Rampage and didn't want to pay $500 for the opportunity.

It might even remove some of the rose coloured glasses most of us seem to be wearing.

    • Life is better with those glasses.

  • This would look good in my kitchen.
