SSD for Old Laptop (Inspiron 15) - Will It Fit?

Hi all, I have an Inspiron 15 5000 series - 5558 with a 5400 rpm HDD. Looking to replace it with a Samsung 860 EVO SSD, but I'm not sure if it will fit. The laptop is out of warranty, so I do not mind trying to replace the HDD myself, but I just want to make sure the SSD will fit before buying one.

Anyone knows if the HDD can be swapped out? Thank you.

A laptop will have a 2.5" drive, so an SSD will fit, no issues.

    • Thank you!

Clarification: A 2.5" SSD. Older laptops may not have a M.2 slot for those kinds of SSDs.

(You're 100% right as it relates to the particular SSD OP is talking about here though.)

    Yes, I have one.

    • Nice! Hope your laptop runs a lot better that way! Mine is painfully slow, especially when starting up.. Only used for normal browsing/ work.

It will make a huge difference, now if only it will take 8gb instead of just 4gb.

if you don't use the optical drive then you could remove the optical drive and replace it with the SSD in a caddy.
the old HDD then becomes storage.
a 256gb SSD is more than enough to hold the OS and other programs.
just change boot location in bios. done.
optical drive is removed by removing the screw on the bottom near the that vent in the centre of the laptop. gently pull the optical drive out.

here is the caddy for ~AU$3 delivered from aliexpress
caddy + SSD would cost ~$60 all up.

    • Thank you! That is very informative. I thought the SSD will be of same size, so it's just a basic swap. I just bought a Samsung 860 EVO 1Tb. Will get a caddy too then i guess.

      • Though you'll lose the battery life and silence of an SSD.

      • You don't need a caddy, only if you want to keep your existing hard drive (and there are no other free 2.5" drive bays in the laptop).
1TB should be plenty though, so I'd consider ditching the hard drive.

  • Hdd is a bit of effort to replace on these models if it is a ~2011 year. It is very doable though with basic laptop knowledge and patience. Google exact model for YouTube videos but I believe on this model you have to remove the keyboard, split the case, detach the monitor and remove motherboard to get access to replace hdd with ssd. A poor design by Dell.

The optical drive on these inspirons is only Sata2 and you preferably want sata3 to take full advantage of ssd speeds. I suggest you get a small 120gb ssd to replace the hdd and put your current hdd in the optical caddy for data storage.

As above, an upgrade to 8gb ram will also make a huge difference especially if you use Chrome.

Edit: looks like your model is newer than I thought. My details above may not apply.

    • Thanks for your reply. I bought the laptop in Dec 2015. It has 16Gb DDR3 RAM.

You will be fine, I have a Dell Precision 2011 and I put an SSD 2 years ago, it is working wonders. It also have 16 GB ram, I run VMs in it.

  • Have the same model and installed a SSD last week. Best decision I have ever made.

    • I must say, for a laptop that is less than 3 years old, it is disappointingly slow. And it was best value for money at the time too.

That should change when you install the SSD

  • From memory swapping HDD could be a very easy task. PM me service tag and I can send you the 'Howto'. For best performance swap hdd to ssd, keep other parts as it is. I bought a similar product in 2014 and it was stupidly slow and upgrade to ssd which made it usable.

    • Thank you very much for the offer. I've swapped it out over the past weekend and it was very easy to do. It runs so much faster now and I'm very happy with it.

  • To others in the comments, the OP'd have to check whether the 2.5" bay's 7mm or 9mm, wouldn't they?

    • either of it will fit
