128/256GB SSD Laptop: How (Where) Do You Normally Store Your Files?

With cheap laptop going for SSD for performance these days, how do you normally store your files in? i.e. movies, musics, photos etc.

Just want to understand how folks do it because am thinking just plugging 2.5" portable HDD every time i want to store things.

  • Some choose to use cloud backups, others have external HDDs, some combine the two for network connected HDDs with automated cloud backup as well.

    • Beauty, thanks!

      • You can also get 128/256GB+ USB sticks/memory cards for extra storage. Either a low profile USB like a Cruzer Fit or an SD card for example to double laptop capacity and leave it plugged in always for extra storage. Will be pretty slow and not the most reliable method but good for dragging files across where required.

Cant stand laptops with 128gb ssd only. 256 should be minimum

    • 128 is cheaper tho than 256

Often it seems like the 128GB models are overpriced to change the value of the 256GB model.

      Thanks for letting us know.

  • NAS…

  • On my main machine 120gb is enough. I do, however, have 8tb on my home server. So all media is stored there.

    • So I presume this is just transfer via Wi-Fi to that 8TB box?

      • No. I have the server mapped to my main desktop - all connected by Cat 5/Ethernet. I don't really transfer stuff, mostly just play direct from the server via mpv/vlc or plex.

  • photos in Google Photos. I don't store movies

  • Just remove the optical drive and plug a 1TB HDD there.

    • But in some models, there aren't any optical drive

  • I currently run off dual SSDs in my laptop (128GB & 256GB M.2) and typically carry around a portable SSD as well as a 128GB USB flash drive. A good majority of my work is stored in OneDrive which makes access easy on the go by tethering off my phone hotspot.

USB flash drive will suffice if you think a portable HDD is too clunky otherwise Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive is really the only other option.

  • if it has a dvd burner, throw that out and get a cradle & put in another HDD :)

    or get an external HDD
