Taking PC Equipment on Flight along with Laptop

Hi
I am planning to take a Gfx card(Nvidia 1080Ti) , an ssd and few other pc equipment on flight which I am planning to buy for my friend.I also have an office laptop that I would be carrying along with me.
Can somebody suggest if there would be any problem in carrying PC stuff ?
TIA

    • Can i put it in checked in baggage ?

      • As long as you're happy to risk it getting damaged in transit

        • Cool :) Thanks a lot I will pack it well

@urahara: In checked in luggage , in factory boxes, buried in clothes it will be very safe.

Just remember, a lot of courier and Auspost chuck packages around like crazy, and they are fine just in factory packaging.

            • @AdosHouse: Can I take power supply as well, thinking of buying it since it is bit cheaper and I still have time to travel.

              • +1

@urahara: I don't see why not, but the box size for factory packaging is pretty large for PSUs.

Just keep in mind, there would be a greater chance that your bag will be pulled aside for a "random search" with all these electronics.

                • @AdosHouse: Unfortunately a 1080ti will probably "fall" out of the suitcase when searched. I'm sure it will be placed in "lost property".

                  • @airzone: ……I'm not disagreeing. But security checkers, no. By the baggage handlers if they know…….well I'm saying they will, but….

The 1080ti should go in carry-on. Bulky but cheaper stuff like the PSU can go in checked in.

                    • @AdosHouse: what if I can lock by checked in baggage ?

                      • @urahara: If security check it, they will bust the locks, as the law allows them.

But yeah, normal bag zippers are easily defeated.

Its unlikely to have stuff stolen unless you advertise it. But if you are worried, get travel insurance. Or just ship the components.

      • the thing to keep in mind is that they are more likely to be stolen in checked luggage, as well.

        • even when it is locked ?

          • @urahara: Zippers are easily defeated with a pen. Unless your check in luggage is a clam shell design with only hinges and an internal locking mechanism.

        • We had a friend who flew back from South America - not only was all the jewellery she had stolen from her suitcase but some of her clothes were turned inside out (she suspected somebody had tried them on).

  • I take a fair bit of pc gear on flights. No problem - except for the unpacking and repacking for security.

  • when i went away for work, i used to take my xbox in my carry on satchel bag, never had any issues

  • I would take it in carry on, I would NOT recommend putting it in checked luggage. GPU's are fairly easily damaged during shipping - motherboard pcie sockets are not as strong as some people think, and large cards can have a lot of leverage. Twisting and flexing during a drop would not be good for the card…

    • You'd have to be crazy to leave the GPU attached to the MB. Size aside, yeah, it'll die a hideous death.

  • I've taken an entire desktop on as carry-on. As long as it meets the size/weight requirements, you should be fine.

      Photos or it didn't happen.

just don't connect a ticking clock onto the boards! ;p

  • -2

    no, 100% prison time.

Seriously, what reason would it be rejected?

  • I came back from Malaysia a while back with a serious amount of tech. I just packed most of it into a desktop case and then put the small expensive items like CPU/ram in the carry-on.
