  • Sounds OK but how do you redeem the travel vouchers? Are there any restrictions on the vouchers (i.e rack rate prices/black out periods etc.)?

Sounds like a good deal but really is contingent on the restrictions of the travel vouchers.

    • Yeah would like more info on how and where you would claim these vouchers?

  • What is iSelect's cut? Usually it isn't a question I'd think to ask, but when I see the name "iSelect" I'm reminded of this 7.30 Report story which suggests you ultimately pay for these sorts of freebies through higher premiums:

I've just looked up a few policies on iSelect.com.au and privatehealth.gov.au… They were all about $2 to $5 cheaper per month on iSelect.

However, privatehealth.gov.au definitely had the overall cheaper options with funds that iSelect does not list.

I'd recommend checking out both sites and making your decision then.

      • I don't think the report was referring to the prices on one comparison site vs another, but the scale of the across-the-board hidden cost of comparison sites. The claim made in the report was that iSelect was asking one insurance company for $750 per policy sold through their site, which kind of puts the $50 gift card that's sometimes offered in perspective.

        • Agreed, but if it is costing the fund $750 - $1,000 upfront to get a customer on a $50/month policy… I figured they must be passing on this cost somewhere…

      • HCF increased its premiums 20% this year and i was looking for an alternative. Thanks for the privatehealth.gov.au link.

  • I'm still looking for more details about the travel vouchers…

This appears to be the public newsletter with the details (page 4):
    http://www.asuqld.asn.au/index.php?option=com_docman&task=do…
… But it is equally useless.

(Although, it does say this offer if valid "throughout the year"!)

I was just looking through the Holidays For Health website.. and it seems a little, well, dodgy. Prices for hotels seem to include the $500 mark-up that you have received in the mail as a 'voucher'. Be wary, oz-b's.

    • Indeed, very wise point.

I think I'll just take the $40 cash rebate using iSelect via MoneybackCO - http://3.ly/tSCq

  • As usual, there's nothing free here - you're paying for it sooner or later. If you see something they offer that's better than anywhere else, take it but make sure you're very careful about what you go for.

iSelect have been in trouble in the past for undisclosed kickbacks and over-representing the range of comparison policies they offer.

Disclosure: I work for an insurance broker in a non-insurance role and (for all I know) we don't compete with iSelect.

    • Agreed. People should use this as a tool/starting point and shouldn't be ignorant to think that these sites cover all health insurance companies (they just cover the ones that pay kickbacks to be listed).

"Fees may be paid as either:
      * One-time fee - We may receive a one-time fee from our participating funds when we deliver a member to a health fund. This fee does not exceed half of the first year premium and once this fee is paid we receive no more fees from the fund.
      * Recurring Fee - We may receive fees while you remain a member of the health fund, but in all cases these fees will not exceed 6.5% of premium collected over an average policy life - around 10 years."

  • use your brain and go with the government all-inclusive site.

these travel vouchers are like what are offered at the Goog Guys and dodgy telemarketers, and the ones that stop you in the shopping centres. they are close to worthless.

  • you are really eligible for a $100 travel voucher straight up for making an enquiry if you decide not to sign up?.

  • Not a negative on this post, but iSelect is a horrible website. Doesn't even have all the major health insurance companies :/

    • Yep, they're absolutely useless. Cheapest extras only insurance for me on there was $60pm. I found THREE providers with about $25 a month, one of which I'm now with. Not to mention the fact that iselect haven't stopped bugging me since.

  • HCF just increased premiums, last year went from $80 to $90, now just got a letter, $90 to $102. Moving premiums.
Not with iSelect though. This deal just seems crap, travel vouchers ? comn it will be crappy booklet of travel vouchers that you'll never use.

If it was qantas/jetstar/virgin blue vouchers, then that'd be different

  • It would be better if they kept the junky incentives and just reduced premiums for people that don't claim/stay healthy.
