I'm a Consultant and I Only Have a Law Degree - Do I Need Any Other Qualifications?

Hi,

I recently opened a new company to assist small business owners and new start ups setting up their business.

The scope of work does involve market analysis, business planning, marketing strategy, connecting client to the right suppliers, reviewing their current business model etc

Do I need a specific licence or a degree to conduct this sort of business?

The fact that your law degree isn't helping you to answer this legal question just… sigh.

Seriously, consider your situation - you want to charge money to help others set up businesses, but you're coming to a free online forum on advice on what you need TO SET UP YOUR OWN BUSINESS.

    FOH.

if only there was some sort of business that could help him to set up his business that helps other people set up their business….

I see a market opportunity here! brb

        setupception it is.

      • Would that not just be a classic ponzi scheme? Setting up businesses that help other set up businesses?

Wouldn't this be something you should know before opening your business?

Where is your law degree from? Are you a registered lawyer?

You are starting up a business to help businesses but you need help starting your business.

      Sounds like Bovine University

Setting up business is not a lawyers scope of work. You should be in court fighting for people. Leave that job for us accountants

    Trolls gonna troll.

  • ONLY a law degree?… geez

Might want to check the regulations - which is something a lawyer should be able to do pretty quickly and easily.

Seriously dude.. If I was a business owner or someone looking to start up a business, I would be very hesitant to take up your services!

Whilst posting on Ozbargain is a start, I think what would be best for you is too seek the help of a professional consultant, one that can assist you with market analysis, business planning, marketing strategy, connecting client to the right suppliers, reviewing their current business model etc.

Yeah, but check that they hold the appropriate licences and qualifications. Ask to see MS Paint diagram to confirm.

I don't think a lawyer should be giving advice on marketing strategies to new business owners. Are you update with the latest digital trends? e.g A.I, chatbots, Blockchain etc

    Lol troll

    • Probably a troll but there are real "startup specialists" out there. I've seen one run like a personal shopping service by a 25yo arts graduate.

      True story.

the answer to this question along with many other questions in life is - let's have a beer and REALLY think about it

I think you better check with a lawyer…oh wait

    Good bait OP

Come on, we all know you are either a troll or totally incompetent and your law degree (if real) is not worth the paper it is written on (which uni was it again that gave you a degree?). Your choice as to what you fess up to!

"The scope of work does involve market analysis, business planning, marketing strategy, connecting client to the right suppliers, reviewing their current business model etc"

If a person wants to start their own business and ask you to do all the above then they shouldn't be starting a business in the first place lol

  • Thank you people !! You've really helped me!! Now let's enjoy Friday!!

  • Marketing is very different to law.
I could help people with marketing and many (but probably not all) aspects of starting a business.
I would not be expecting many people to want to pay me a great deal for this though, until such time as a I either 1)had a related qualifications, which shows I have the knowledge to help or 2)Had a proven track record and show such.
You would maybe need to work for free, at least for initial consultation, then help a few people for free or very cheap, so you can show that you can do it, and possibly get referals from your initial clients, they might know others who could use your help and expertise (if you have any, lol).
You could start some businesses of your own, and write a book, to gain apparent credibility as an advisor and expert. Though I always lol at people whom assure others they can make them rich or make them lots of money… for a price and consultation fee Hahaha..If they really are that good, they wouldn't need income from book writing and consulting ;)

  • Which cereal box did you find your law degree in?

  • U need a Cert 3 in Food Preparation

  • Was it the chicken or the egg that came first.

  • Obviously purchased their so called 'Law Degree' online from Dodgy Brothers.

Not even a good troll OP.

  • I work in the company that deals with a lot of SMB. One thing common is that they are very short on time and money. Regardless of the best course of action on certain matter (eg IT) they will not care nor listen if it doesnt help them a cent.
I see your problem as the marketing, you cannot sell your product (consulting) to the established business (let's face it, already opened, busy running, ppl will not listen to others advise after the fact until it's about to fail, but you do not want that kind of clientele)

I do not know, but how does one sell "advisory" to one that isnt open in the market?
And most importantly, how much do you think you should be charging to sustain yourself? (IT support generally charge around $100/hr, lawyers charge $300-500, tax accountant for PAYG return is $100-200) so… $2000? $5000? or on-going per hr basis? Many SMB borrow money to start their business (shop fit outs, merchandise, etc) not sure if the owners would be happy to fork out another expense where they dont know what it can return.

  • I would suggest OP has NO QUALIFICATIONs to carry out the said work.
Having said that OP doesnt need any such qualifications either from a "legal" point of view as they can always employ people with the required qualifications.
If would be helpful though to have a detailed knowledge of the areas in which advise is offered.

  • OP should get Phd in Business Establishment to sound credible /s
