Looking for a Good Value Monitor

Hi All,

I'm getting a new PC with a GTX 1070TI and I'm not sure which monitor to get… I really like the ultrawide ones.

I was looking into this Kogan 35" curved 75hz 21:9 for $389. Although I've seen that the same monitor was being sold for the same price in February this year, and it's said that this is on sale… Doesn't seem like.

I'm not sure what other options should I consider. My preference would be up to $350.

Will use it for casual gaming and productivity. Would like something that the colors look really good.

Do you guys know something on a deal worth buying now, is the Kogan a good one even if it doesn't really seem like a real sale.

Regards,
Rapha

  • Have you used a curved monitor? My understanding is they are not that great for productivity use.

    • If your work requires you to draw straight lines, yes, can be a problem.

However every other productive job is miles better because of the extra wide real estate. Curved makes sense for a 21:9… not so much if it is 16:9

      • Ok, good to know. I had seen them mentioned as not being good for spreadsheets or similar, which would present a problem for me and presumably others.

Will put them back on my list!

        • There are some flat ultra-wide panels too… so that's an option if you're concerned.

Recently noticed places like JB having these 21:9 monitors on demo, so you could always drop by there and see if it suits.

          • @onevstheworld: Just be sure it's not a TN panel. A flat ultrawide with a TN panel's (lack of) viewing angles can't possibly turn out well…

  • +4

Get a 144hz monitor, you'll wonder how you played on a 60hz slideshow previously.

  • But with a gtx1070TI will I be seeing to draw 100+ fps on ultra in recent games ?

When I say productivity wouldn't it be mainly for work. I'd use it more for games, but once in a while use the extra screen size to have some windows open simultaneously side by side.

Anyway someone has some to recommend around that price tag?

If you get a 1080P screen maybe. Ultra is not something you run when chasing FPS or really for playing the game, it's just for taking some fancy screenshots or running benchmarks. The quality is usually directly comparable to High but way more taxing on your system. Much better to put everything to medium and then turn up some selected settings to High and you will have a way smoother gameplay experience.

  • I'm not too familiar with Kogan displays so not sure whether they're good value but I'm always wary of cheap displays. Im a fan of Dell monitors - they're good quality, great value if bought on sale, and their very easy to deal with if you ever need to make a warranty return. You should be able to get a 16:9 27" Ultrasharp monitor for around $450 if you wait for them to go on sale (should have sales coming up to Christmas), the resolution on that is 2560x1440 so actually has more screen real estate than the ultrawide monitor you posted which is only 2560x1080p. Dell monitors are also known to have good colour accuracy and are popular among designers, from their website - "Get exceptional colour accuracy and consistency straight out of the box, with each monitor factory tuned at 99% sRGB with a deltaE less than 3."
