Event That I Had Paid for Has Now Become a Free Event. Should I Persue a Refund?

So one of my friends invited me to a paid event that cost $10. I paid that at the time around two days ago through PayPal. However since then they have changed the event cost to $0. This seems a bit shoddy to me. Do you guys think I am entitles to a refund? Should I do a charge-back through PayPal?

EDIT: I have contacted the event organisers and they have provided a refund.

What is the event and why did it become free?

    • An end of semester comedy event. I can only guess but maybe low sales volume. Having a paid event does prevent regular punters from just coming in and having a drink.

It's $10 - is it really worth pursuing? Whatever it was, you obviously thought it was worth paying for to attend.

If you do want to pursue it, asking the organisers is the only way you'd know if you can get a refund.

      As a uni student. Yes.

        As a uni student. Yes.

So the best thing to do is to ask the organisers directly. You'll be able to get a more definite answer from them.

Edit: I would try and ask quickly too - they may be willing to issue refunds for a few people here and there, but may stop if everyone else suddenly called to ask for refunds.

Spends $10 on comedy event, $100 on meal/bar.

It's $10 - is it really worth pursuing?

Do you have $10 I could borrow?

      • I do actually.. just tell the event organiser that I want my refund and they should pass you my $10!

The deal/contract was done and dusted when you bought the tickets and you are not entitled to a retrospective refund.

  • Get the free ticket and ask the organiser to refund?

Did you ask and what is the response?

OK, I have asked and they said they will provide a refund. I shall new be closing this discussion thread.

good outcome and you get what you want now as a ozbargainer

This seems a bit shoddy to me.

Ok. Apart from your feelings, what part of "you paid for something and you're receiving it" seems shoddy to you?

    • +7

      Lighten up.

It is a bit crappy to pay for something where everyone else gets in for free.

      • +7

No different than buying something that later gets discounted. Happens literally all the time. Sure, it feels bad, but there's nothing shoddy (or even uncommon) about it.

People throw around these kinds of things to basically justify nothing but their feelings. Oh I feel bad so they must've done something wrong. No, back it up or don't throw around baseless statements.

        • +4

No its the fact that it got reduced to $0. Which is different to if it was discounted to $5. It's odd but I would've been ok with that. As having an event that is free changes the dynamic of the event and service that I bought. So it isn't as described. If the event has a price you expect so level of exclusivity. Whereas if it is free that is removed. This change to the service as I believe constitutes failing the "fit for any specified purpose " which is a private comedy event/party, not just a comedy event in a pub.

@WouldYouLookAtThat: Other than an obvious $5 difference, what else is different about it?

If the event has a price you expect so level of exclusivity.

Even a $1 price? A "donate a coin" cover charge? "Pay $2 and we'll include a free jug of beer"?

This change to the service as I believe constitutes failing the "fit for any specified purpose "

Lol. Please tell me you're not in uni doing a law degree.

@HighAndDry: No I don't, but I have friends who do.

              • @WouldYouLookAtThat: Oh good. I was worried standards had dropped that far. No, this doesn't constitute… whatever you think it constitutes. It's an event. I'm fairly sure "for a specified purpose" isn't even applicable here.

    A 'friend' invited you?

Anyway, I don't see this as any different to the discounted prices for events that are discounted / half-price (or free) tix. You purchase when you want to, at the current $.

Can you post the event as a deal please.

    • You have your priorities in order.

So this is the event that I was talking about, because some of you asked.

To clarify the event is yet to happen, so I haven't received the service just prepaid for it.

As a personal protest, don't go.

    • +1

You have the right to ask, and they have a right to refuse

  • +6

if the price increased to $20 then would you pay the extra $10 to the vendor?

    • In this instance the event still has a price which would make it materially the same. However I would still consider this an unethical practice.

Just replace some of your weekly meals with instant noodles, but im sure as a uni student you'd know this

  • "I paid that at the time around two days ago through PayPal. However since then they have changed the event cost to $0. An end of semester comedy event."

    Yup, that's pretty funny!

    Should I Persue a Refund

Not sure but maybe you should pursue one?

  • $10 to a freebie? This should be posted in the deals section.

  • Where's your Woodstock spirit…

    • Still at the bottom of the bottle he didnt buy because hes to poor. Begged for refund of $10 after all

  • If the price had gone UP would you have posted here about it and insisted on paying the extra money OP?

  • it is like last deal for crazy rich asian movie. I saw some people printed out booking confirmation and they did not even bother checking them. Just let everyone in whoever showed up. However, it was still free.

  • You are talking about a price change here and there is nothing illegal about that so long as you receive the goods or services for which you paid.
But lucky you if you got a refund

  • Hahaha
I just got 2 tickets for Griff Rhys Jones from Promotix for $10.95.
They're still selling them for $71+ each!
If it was for charity I'd say no refund… but good you got one.
