I have to produce a stitched together series of clips with overdubbed music and commentary for a 5 minute powerpoint presentation to support a speech :)

Very convenient - next year when they are 12 it can be imovie 12
But you might want to look at this add on for firefox (only for firefox)

This enables you to download you tube video in mp4 format, which can be used in imovie
alternatively there is

Which adds the ability to download in mp4 720HD format. You can choose which of the add ons you prefer
