What Do You Use to Shave Your Head?

Ozbargainers,

Wanting to start buzzing my own hair. No.1 or No. 2. Electric only - don't want to use a blade. Something easy to use single handed with a mirror.

Been eyeing off:

  • after a while, you wont need a mirror. most of it is done on touch.
ive used a single razor and you:ll cut yourself plenty the first few times. does a very effective job, but now im using a protector 3 schick. 3 blades is much easier to clean and i never nik myself.
as far as clippers go, i use one from a haircut kit with a few variable attachments. most important is that you can clean it properly, as this will preserve its life. i also have a waterproof one, as clipping in the shower is an alternative if you cant step outside. its a messy thing to do. clippers with the fingers closer together seem to cut closer and keep a good level. depends on how thick your hair is.

  • Normal hair clippers…I think it is Breville?

    I use this:

It takes away the awkward feeling in my non-dominant hand when I'm trying to use normal clippers. The only downside (for me) is that the attachments range from #1-#4. I usually do #0.5.

have been through quite a few shavers over the years and the one linked above has been by far the best. Easy to use in one hand. I use the 2mm attachment so bit longer than what you have said but works great. can remove the attachment as well to get a close shave on the face

  • have been using older version of this

for about 5 years, still works fine, easy to do every 10 days or so, must have saved hundreds of $$$ over the years. Lithium plus ceramic = minimum degradation and maintenance, very easy to use. Also use it on stubble if I just want to have a short tidyish face.

  • I currently use a "Philips 9000 Series Hair Clipper". got it for $99 when shavershop had them on sale, doesn't look like it's still around. The great thing about this one is that it's measured in millimeters and not "number", but each "number" is about 3mms, eg No.1 is 3mm, No.2 is 6mm… etc

But the main tip is to get a cordless shaver. Do it in the shower cubical and as others have suggested, you won't need a mirror, just feel around until your whole head has the same "fuzzy" consistency. Once finished, pick up all the clumps of hair you can with your hand and put it in the bin, The rest can be washed down the drain when you have a shower after the cut.

  • A set of Wahl clippers that cost me ~$30, just keep them clean and lubricated and they'll last for a few years.

  • As someone who cuts their own hair with a no.2 or 3 (3 is my winter coat.) the top one is awesome. I have that exact Remington shaver. Does everything I need it to. And super easy to clean.

The other clipper I have is the VS Sassoon VSM7374A. It’s great as well. Super powerful and the lithium battery lasts ages. It’s a bit narrower than the Remington, but makes better job of the tighter edges.

  • Thanks all. I'm going to go with the Remington. Cheers
