Using Expired Protein Power. Ok?

Hello people of Ozbargain,

I found some whey protein powder I forgot about, which has a Best Before date of 14th MARCH 2017. I understand "Best Before" is generally a recommendation from the manufacturer, and not the same as an "Expiry Date", but was wondering,

  1. Might it be ok to still consume?

  2. What's likely to happen if you consume Whey Protein that's passed the BB/Expiry Dates ?

  3. What are some things to look at to determine whether the protein is truly off or not?

  4. Are there effects of the whey protein reduced?

The whey protein is [Choc Coconut], & [Choc Mint], by Bulk Nutrients. Both are factory sealed, and have been kept in a dark, dry place in my room.

I've Googled this question, got mixed results, some saying throw it out, no good. Some saying as long as it's kept well, doesn't smell/taste bad, should be good.

What are your thoughts ?

Can't risk losing them gainz, bruh.

Nah, of course it'll be fine.

    • Nah, it'll be highly toxic OP.

Better send it to me and I'll dispose of it safely.

I doubt it will make you sick, but it will propably taste terrible.

      *Probably taste exactly the same.

      FTFY

  • It will be fine

I've purchased expired protein tubs many times and have never had an issue. I would personally rather buy the expired tubs as they are usually heavily discounted and taste no different.

  • Thanks guys :). Wondering though, even if it looks and tastes fine, is the quality of protein affected? Perhaps the bodies ability to utilize it for muscle, & other cellular syntheses, is reduced as protein ages past expiry ?

Thanks in advance :), if it's all good, will save me a few bucks buy more to replace. :)

a Best Before date of 14th MARCH 2017

Best case scenario, you save a few dollars. Worst case scenario, you literally die. I mean, worth the risk I guess.

I've had protein that have gone sorta bad before. Just left it out there I guess.
Which were suggested by the colour changes, slight grey spots and other weird things going on.

It tastes the same, smells the same. Just doesn't look the same. No side effect. Maybe it didn't go bad.

But protein powder is relatively dry, especially when you haven't opened it. Doubt much spoilage could happen if it were package properly in the first place.

    • probably just moisture

Either will give you some mad gainz… React with your system and cause some kind of bizarre mutation (possibly superpowers, super-bargaining-powers) , instant death in which case RIP :( .. Or none of the above.

Note: 'best before' I believe means under the laws and health testing etc, that it cannot harm you when past date. It is my understanding that anything that can harm you past the date, has to state 'used by' .

This is the rule of thumb, but I think it is a bit more subtle, and that if the spoilage occurs it is very visible (think mould on bread) then best before is ok, not invisible like botulism or something.

  • Should be fine

  • Depends on where and how you store it. If you store it in a dark, cool place, and still brand new sealed, then should be fine.

  • What did the manufacturer say when you put the question to them?

      Copied email,

"*In regards to the protein you have, the important thing to note is that the dates are a best before, and not an expiry date. Usually powder products like these can be consumed past the best before date, assuming they have been stored correctly. That said, the products you mentioned are over a year past the best before, so they may not be suitable.

We wouldn't recommend using something that far past the best before, however if the product still smells and tastes okay then you may be able to still use it - this would be at your own discretion.*"

Best Before, provided stored correctly and unopened, indicates the period the product will remain in optimum condition. After
The BBD it will still be ok to consume, just may not be at its best.
Personally I would have no problems using product past the BBD, I often purchase products close to BBD as they are usually heavily discounted, saving me heaps.

  • I recently finished off protein I had in the cupboard that expired in 2016, didn't have any issues with it. I do my best to make sure packaging is as airtight as a person can reasonably get it before putting it back in storage. It hadn't even gone clumpy or anything, and tasted the same.

  • I feel like a lot of the comments are correct, but may not be as applicable to something that's over ONE AND A HALF YEARS past its best before date. That's enough time for OP to have had a kid who's already walking around.

Thanks for all the replies, guys. Much appreciated. Think I'll just use them up, see how it goes. I usually mix is with fruits/milk into a smoothie, so any changes in taste, hopefully, would be masked :).

    • I hope you dont get sick or anything, it would kinda defeat the purpose of the health /gym junkie thing

    • How did you go? have the same problem lol

  • Will
    harm your body

    • Hey Brucet, Thanks for the reply :). In what way, would it harm the body ?

  • +1

Would be fine mate. Only issue is might not mix properly/taste a little off. 100% wont do you harm, but eventually might upset your gut.

    hope that helps
