What Is Wrong with My Laptop Screen?

Hi, link below is a picture of my laptop and I was just wondering if anyone could help find out what is wrong with my laptop screen. I have a Lenovo X1 Carbon Generation 4.

When I hook up the laptop to an external source, the purple square disappears and works fine. It would sometime go away with time, or completely disappear for quite a while before coming back. I just want to see if anyone has experienced anything similar and see what it may be before I go to the store and have it replaced. Thanks!

  • Mate don't know whats up but doesn't look too good, the last time I've seen similar purple was when a magnet is placed to close to the CRT screens, but I have a feeling this may be something else? It looks like the actual screen, when you connect your laptop to HDMI to another screen or tv is it only on the laptop screen?

    • yep the external tv/monitor has perfect image, and the blur still remains on the laptop screen. It comes and goes but is almost unusable when it does happen. I just want to suss things out and see if anyone has similar experiences. :)

The shape and the way it's 'inwards' from the edges indicates maybe there's pressure on the centre of the screen, or perhaps heat from the laptop body affecting it. I don't think it's an electrical, LED or cable wiring issue in any way.

Does it disappear if you stick it in the fridge for 5 minutes? Does the colour move or ripple if you push on the screen?

Either way I'd be hoping you're still under warranty, as that's probably the simplest fix to get the screen replaced by Lenovo.

    • I don't think it is a heat issue as the problem sometimes appears as soon as I turn on the laptop after it has been off for quite a long time, although I will try putting it in the fridge to see if it helps (thanks for the tip!). and nope, no warranty unfortunately :/

ahhh I think the person above means try doing it in a room with good air-conditioning or a good fan near by and see if it makes any difference. Please don't put it in the fridge, I might be wrong but I think its very bad for electronics because it tries to suck out the moisture.

        • fair point haha

        • I think the problem with putting electronics in the freezer is when you remove them to turn them on, water in the warm air condensates on the cold electronics, causing shorts.

  • maybe the A panel is bend

This seems to be an identical issue.

Interestingly, it seems to be GRAVITY affecting the symptoms!

If this is the case… maybe try leaving your laptop upside down, or on one edge overnight to see if that changes anything.

    • thanks for spending some time looking into this problem. It seems the problem that was linked moved bottom of the screen depending on how it was placed. However the problem with my laptop seems its always dead center and did not shift anymore to the left than it does to the right.

      • Yours might be centred on your LCD, if you always leave your laptop flat; therefore the liquid crystal might be 'sagging' inwards toward the centre of the screen.

I've not seen anything like it, and I've been brought a variety of dead & dying computers in my time… bizarre!

(Also, laptops are fine in the fridge. Just ask anyone who lives in really cold climates.) Trustnoone is probably concerned about condensation forming after you remove cold electronics and bring them into a humid area, but even with any exposed circuitry it's a negligible risk.

  • We use X1 Yogas for work and have had issues with the GPU / Screen on multiple machines (similar screen defects shown but not always in the center).. we just send it back to lenovo and they've typically replaced the screen and/or gpus to fix the problem

  • Send it for warranty repair

    (Bet its caused by pressure)
