Access to Library of 40+ Games (Worth US$700+) Incl. Super Meat Boy, Abzu, Psychonauts + More via Discord Nitro for US $9.99/Mo

74

Discord has announced a PS+/Games with Gold (but more like Netflix) style games library for subscribers to Discord Nitro. The new service is now available on the latest Discord App update.

Members who were signed up to Nitro before October 10 can continue to pay $4.99/mo until January 1st, 2020 while still having full access to the games library. The $4.99 tier will still be available however you do not get access to the games library (just the standard Nitro chat features).

There are some great games available already on the service on top of the ones I've mentioned in the title, including:

  • Darksiders 2
  • INSIDE
  • System Shock
  • Guacamelee
  • FTL
  • Limbo
    And lots more.

  • Wouldn't really call it free. You're paying extra for the games subscription (Discord Nitro alone is $5USD/month). As far as I know, that standard Nitro tier isn't being removed.

Edit: nevermind, apparently it is being removed? So after 2020 or whatever, Nitro will be $10/month, even if you don't want the games subscription. Wew…

    • You're right, I've adjusted the title so it isn't misleading.

Nitro "classic" will still be available per https://blog.discordapp.com/discord-nitro-is-evolving-4c0475…

      • Yeah honestly I'm a little confused, they need to clarify that on their site. I've had the Nitro games thing for a couple days, assumedly because I've been a Nitro subscriber for a while, but I didn't know if it was a price raise or if they had two tiers. The website only says $9.99/month, with no mention that I can see of the old price. Confusing.

        • They're increasing the price from $4.99 to $9.99. Existing subs effectively get a discount until 2020.

There are now two tiers for those who just want extra chat features or also want the games library.

@rith: Ah yep, now I see it in that blog post.

Grateful, as I would no longer be a Nitro subscriber if the new $9.99 tier was the only one. $4.99 is expensive enough for having a GIF avatar and using emotes. :p

    Where's the bargain…?

Seems like straight up promotion 🤷

Well, Abzu on its own is US$19.99 on the Steam store so I don't know what the complaint is?

EDIT: Limbo is also $19.99, FTL is $9.99, Guacamelee is $14.99 so there is already a decent saving for those after those particular games.

Do you get to keep the games forever? Or aslong as you pay?

Because with that logic , EA Play pass is also a bargain definitely not a marketing scheme for dead games

          From the blog:

To be super ultra double clear, you must remain subscribed to receive these perks. Cancelling or changing your plan will result in losing access to the games library.

FTL is 6 years old, has been on special for $2.49 many many many times, as well as being included in several bundles. Nobody is paying $9.99 for it.

Limbo is also 6 years old, and has even been free multiple times (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/253161, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/403179).

Guacamelee is only 5.5 years old, but has still been as low as $1.50 (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/228872) and included in several bundles.

You could have bought all 3 of those for less than 1 month's subscription, and you'd have them permanently.

who the hell pays full price for games?

How is this a bargain? You don't retain ownership. It's playing the game as long as you pay. All they did was up the price of nitro.

If you were already getting Discord Nitro then yeah, sure, I guess this is giving you more than you had (although only until 2020). However as a $10/month games service this is terrible value. Far better off with Humble Monthly or even Origin Access.

Not a huge fan of subscription based gaming i think PS plus and Xbox live was bad enough

but can see how some people might like this way of getting access to games

    • This would be an OK way IF you were able to keep the games once you stopped subscribing (similar to Twitch Prime)

  • Great, now I'm going to have to join another dodge family plan.
