Sony NW-A45 High Resolution Walkman 16GB - Black $184 (Grey Import) with Free Shipping to Met Areas @ DWI

660

This is the 2017 model. Best price I have seen with free shipping, though it's grey import. Sony usually has good QC, so should be safe to buy. I have own this and 3 previous models, and all of them have served me well. The price has come down due to the new release of the A50 series in August 2018, but still a good buy for this price, you get to enjoy hi-res music!

I have always loved using the current crops of Sony Walkman as it is more versatile compared to using my iPod/iPhone which needs to be synced to iTunes for music management. With the Walkman, you can just pop in your sd card (supports up to 400GB) and you drag and drop your music files into your own folders, no need to go through iTunes. And it lasts for 30-50 hours depending on what kind of music files you play. Sound quality far exceeds that of mobile phones/iPod generally.

  • I need to upgrade my iPod nano 7,
    worthy replacement?

    • +2

Definitely better than the iPod nano 7 which I also own. I have a 256GB of micro sd card which basically stores my music on the go. Sound is super clear with wired connection, and has Apt-X and LDAC supports for headphones that support these codecs.

      • Would this be any good to put in your pocket and go for a run?
Really tempted to purchase at this price

        • +1

It's very light due to the all aluminium casing, but may be a little bulky for some folks since it's bigger than the iPod nano. But it's definitely smaller than smartphones. I prefer to run with this than my iphone which is bigger and heavier and distracts me with incoming messages during my workouts.

  • +1

Can you play Spotify through it or is it internal/external storage only?

    • +17

This is a strictly stand-alone (non-internet based) music player, meant for the hi-res audio folks. You still need your iOS/Android phones if you want to use Spotify.

      • Thanks for that👍🏻

  • Hmm..a deal for Sony DAP, but I' ve got an Onkyo DP-X1A already. Should I pull the trigger?

    • $600player vs $250player, lol

There’s a lot of horseshit circulated around Audio forums.

    • Same boat, have a pioneer xdp-300r. Do I want this

  • These are good, as is the price. If I still used wired headphones would have definitely jumped on it.

  • Does it have a built in amp?

I think tobydeals sells refurbished items as brand new, shipped from HK. Looking at forums, some people get lucky, others - not so much.

    • cheers man, just got one from eglobal. hopefully it comes in one piece lol

    • eglobal shipping to remote areas $48. I know Tasmania isn't attached, but I wouldn't have called it remote.

    • +1

Anyone received stock from eglobal? They've cancelled my order and issued refund:(

Should have gone to DWI initially which was more reliable based on previous experience.

      • Bad luck man.
Mine shipped on Thursday night. It's on the way to destination now. Hoepfully should be here by end of this week. It shipped with Toll Express.

I was thinking DWI but I've never bought from them and out of the reviews I looked, I seem to trust eglobal a little over DWI haha :/

  • What about GST?

    • GST is collected at time of sale, not by the border.

  • +1

Use Tidal HiFi with a CCK on an iPhone with a AQ dragonfly

    • Cheaper + significantly better sound
    • +7

People like using a separate device because of the battery drain.

Also Mojos are hitting 350-400 on the used market. Something to consider.

      • +1

Where are you finding them for 350-400? I see them for around 500ish.

        • Those mojos are being overpriced. If you pay attention to sales over the past month, that’s how much people were able to sell them for.

  • I mostly listen to audiobooks and podcasts. How would this perform for those tasks given the requirements are slightly different?

    • +3

unless you're churning through your phone battery at an unmanageable rate due to your audio book habits I wouldn't bother getting this.

    • +3

bro this is only for audiophilas, not the average person

      • +1

He sounds like a serious listener. Perhaps he wants to hear every tone in Stephen Hawking's voice?

      • Lol audiophilas? Not audiophiles?

    • +3

It’s not for podcasts. It just treats them as music files (no remembering where you’re up to when switching files, no on-device syncing, etc).

Which is fine, because it’s total overkill for podcasts. There are better, cheaper options for that. This is a high-quality music player.

  • Oh gosh… this or a Zune HD? I’m torn.

    • +1

Oh man I had a Zune when they first came out X Years ago - 80GB - damn that thing rocked til I lost it.

      • The UI is awesome… and I’m well inside the Apple ecosystem! Remember that screensaver?

  • damn audiophilas

Anyone have an idea of the sound quality of this DAP vs lg v20?

    • +1

Those LG’s with the Quad DAC already give great sound and can power any headphone easily enough.

  • Guessing using this with my XM3's would be no better than using my Xperia phone? Both have DSEEX for Bluetooth?

It just improves wired sound yes?

    • Because this player supports LDAC and the XM3 headphones also support LDAC, you can get a much better bitrate using this type of wireless compared to standard Bluetooth. The LDAC format supports over 900kbps so that is enough to handle any FLAC music without compressing.

    • +1

Xperia’s already got LDAC, so no better…

  • Whats new in the A50 series?

    • 2 main new features:

USB DAC (Digital-Analogue Converter) by pairing it with a PC or Mac computer

BLUETOOTH® Receiver mode to give your smartphone music a boost

      https://www.sony.com.au/electronics/walkman/nw-a50-series

      • +1

A45 has the USB DAC function, so only Bluetooth Receiver is the new features

        • Surely, that could have been implemented to the NW-A45 via a firmware update…

  • +1

Brilliant price for a brilliant player. Mines been great. If you’re serious about music and especially if your collection is sourced from CD’s, it’s a far superior option to using a phone

  • I thought Walkman died with the cassettes?

    • +2

      Yes, you thought. Wrong!

  • +2

    Does it have MEGA Bass!????

    • +1

MegaBass and Dolby S NR on the Walkman was boss.

  • cheers OP, was contemplating buying on for RRP but thank god you posted this. Bought one from eglobal with the first time buyer code

    • +1

How do you get the code?

      • +1

when you click on the eglobal link, there should be a popup which asks you to subscribe and you'll get the code. I think its "WELCOME"
        First purchase >150 you'll get $6 off

        • Thanks man. The code worked. uBlock is probably blocking the popup -_-

    https://www.tobydealsau.com/en_AU/product/sony-nw-a45-high-r… apparently it's $157.93 here (free shipping) after 5% discount code…

    • +1

Even cheaper if you're happy with the red variant! https://www.tobydealsau.com/en_AU/product/sony-nw-a45-high-r…

      • +1

Yeah, reading online comments about tobydeals made me hesitate and go with eglobal though…

        • +1

Yeah likewise. I was gonna buy off tobydeals until I read negative comments about it. Decided to go for eglobal (bought my phone from there)

          • @kakarot123: Did you end up getting yours? I was wondering where the hell mine had gone and find they've cancelled my order and apparently created some credit note or some crap!

            • @kudoz: Hey man, I just received mine yesterday.

Hopefully you get a full refund man :(

  • +1

I remember an Xduoo X3 was going dirt cheap in the past year on Gearbest. That was an audiophile-approved mp3 player. Plus it could use Rockbox, which I miss since my old Sansa died.

I passed on it as I don't listen to lossless audio. But mobile phones (both iOS and Android) are rubbish compared to an mp3 player running Rockbox for any kind of audiobook/podcast listening in terms of functionality (even if graphically, Rockbox is as basic as it gets).

  • +7

Pity, it uses a proprietary usb charger cable. I would jump on it otherwise. :(

Cheapest spare cable I can find.
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Insten-Charger-Cable-Walkman-Playe…

    • +1

Yep, that's what kills it for me unfortunately. Sony's hard on for proprietary connectors really frustrates me.

  • Got an LG G6 so won't pull the trigger. But when the LG dies, and phones no longer have a 3.5mm jack, looks like I'll be back in 2004 with a DAP in the car again.

  • +1

I bought the 64GB model off Amazon Japan a while back and it's my favourite music player. It only had Japanese as the language though so I had to flash the software.

  • Would this make 320 mp3s sound better compared to a phone? Or is it mainly for FLAC?

Also what level of inner ear headphones would be needed to appreciate a difference in SQ? Phone is just so convenient to use.

I don't think the Bose QC35s are compatible with any of the standards =(

    • One of the reviews I read mentioned they have Bluetooth and NFC… so your Bose should work.

    • This is really going to shine best with wired headphones. Its DAC is the selling-point, and none of the EQ/enhancement features work in wireless mode.

It’s overkill for just sending audio data wirelessly.

    • On A40s for Bluetooth, no EQ, or any. So it just helps you to save your phone battery lol
for 320kbps mp3s it's depended on which kind of phone u got, but imho there is an improvement. clearer sound, better bass.
I used it with my XBA-A3 and compare to Xperia XZ and Sharp S2 (of course Sharp USB-C to 3.5 is a big flop)

    • What’s the point of using FLAC when Bluetooth is lossy?

      • +2

LDAC allows hi-res audio over Bluetooth and AptX is “near-lossless” for FLAC.

        • That I concur.

  • This is really tempting… I used to love my ipod Nano but the storage limitations ruined the experience. Im so used to using my phone for music now, i dont know if i would find this useful anymore (i dont use very expensive headphones).

  • I wonder what these are like for gapless? My android phone is fine for most codecs, but I still unfortunately have some concerts that I mastered with Nero aac that android seems to have issues with, even other players like rockets with their own engine. I need to dig out the old discs and remaster, but so much easier said than done…

  • the great point about this DAP is you can use it as a dedicate dac for your Phone or PC!

  • Great price, I wonder what the sound signature is like? Also what's the typical battery life?

I'm currently using Shanling M3s, and found that the battery life could be a bit short (balanced-out)

    • For battery, it is good, but cannot reach Sony's claim number (based on mp3), because most of my collection is flac. In general, more than 20h with a fully charged.

      Note: A4x doesn't have balanced-out.

  • I have this, its a great little unit. Sound quality is superb.

    Battery life is very good.

Makes the quality of iPod etc look silly.

  • What is the point of using this one? People, use Spotify,. Your life is going to be way brighter than with this device :)

  • Damn. Out of stock everywhere. :(
