Where to Buy Chess Set in Sydney?

Hi all,

Unsure where to put this,…

I moved to Sydney and need to buy a nice quality chess set, triple weighted pieces, one that comes with extra queen in the set.
I can't find any most are online, but I want to have a look and feel them.

Sydney CBD, Parramatta, or Hurstville area.

Cheers

  • Also interested in affordable analogue chess clock as well.

  • There is a game store in North Parramatta, just near the old cemetary.

  • Ah, interesting question… I've always wanted a schmick chess set… but could never stomach the multi-$100 costs nor the thought of having a dedicated table somewhere with a set that I'll have to clean and dust all the time, so just continue to use my decently weighted wooden set from China. Bought it for $30 and it's a damn sight better than the plastic ones elsewhere for nearly similar pricing.

INXS - while I prefer wooden pieces, I've seen the plastic pieces used in tourneys in my son's school. They're very very nice. I have no idea what kind they are. I guess what I'm saying is that I've learned that not all plastic pieces are cheap looking and nasty.

  • Most bricks and mortar places in Australia re-sell Indian or Chinese manufactured sets for 100-200% markup.

The quality on them can be excellent, once you shop around online, you can start to recognise the same sets in stores.

I understand wanting to touch and feel a set before buying, but if you know the specifications that you need (piece size, weight, material) and you buy from somewhere with a decent returns policy, then you shouldn't be getting any surprises, and you shouldn't be stuck with anything you don't like.

  • ive very picky about then, i need to see and touch them, i like to see the size of the rooks battlement , needs to be wide and big, not small.

ps, they use plastic ones in tournaments for 2 reasons, they are cheap and kids (and even adults damaged them) plastic ones are harder to damage…

but if you see some good tournament such as IM or GM invitationals, they are all wooden and proper.

there are very few chess sets that are decent, you can usually tell they are good if they include a spare queen for each side.

    ill try north para cheers

    • missed the point where i want to see and touch?

  • I know its an old thread but would like to mention I recently bought an original dgt clock and a wooden board of great quality from Gambit Chess Supplies in Harrington Park NSW. Pieces set was bought over ebay from an antiques seller for a very cheap offer :)
