Need DC Motor Kit for School Project

Hi, I need some advice for a primary school project. Need to make a small boat with a dc motor.

I had a look online for parts but would appreciate some guidance.

Any good sites that sell this stuff?

I had a look on ebay but the variety made me more confused…

  • How fast do you need it to go and how well do you need it to work? Technically you can just add a little slither of that bar soap and it'll create a boat that moves forward. Otherwise I typically go to Jaycar for my electronics but they're usually pretty pricey (though they have a brick and mortar store so you can test things out quicker). Otherwise theres always littlebirdelectronics which is good as well. You might also find a kit if you're looking for something more prebuilt.

  • It is a primary school project.

My child just need to show that the boat can operate in water with a propeller. Willing to spend max $15-$20.

      buy a toy boat.

    • Rubber band propeller?

@vegemite2008 Does it actually need to be dc powered. Old rubber band would work.

  • Jaycar have a good range of motors in that price range.

  • Balloon powered is more fun.

If it has to be a DC motor, small mabuchi FA-130 size is standard.

  • Jaycar. Go in and chat to the staff.

They are always really helpful and knowledgeable about this stuff. It is the last remaining store really that has propper kits like this or they will help you buy the bits you need.

  • Depends how much time you want to spend on it. Easiest way is to buy an electric shaver and attach a propeller made from a tin can. Cost you about $20
Don't expect any miracles in terms of speed, but it will go. Something like this will do for 5min, although its preferrable if you can find one that takes 2 batteries

  • You could pick up a little hand held fan for ~$2 that runs on AA.

Hack it apart and mount the fan so it can blow the boat along.

  • I bought a drink mixer (battery) for $4 .

    It should do the job.

    Thanks for all the replies.
