Discounted Quality Oil for Motorcycles?

Shell USA has Rotella T6 fully synthetic that is a tried and tested oil that performs well in motorcycles. It now even has JASO MA certification.

In Australia Caltex Delo 400 Multigrade has been verified by some Australian motorcyclists as a usable oil. Caltex Oils are not commonly available as far as I can tell.

Gulf Western have a couple of oils that they say are okay for wet clutches (eg. Premium Gold 15W-40 and Syn-X 3000) in the description but they don't have an official JASO MA oil in their range. Penrite and Nulon do actually have car oils with JASO MA certification. SCA is currently selling HPR Diesel 15 cheap and they say wet clutch compatible in the description, alas no JASO MA certification.

Maybe waiting for a 20%-30% off the entire range sale at SCA or Repco and buying a motorcycle oil would be easier than finding a motorcycle-compatible car or Diesel oil that gets deep discounts?

  • Motorcycles don't use much oil so most discounts will probably only save you about $5.

Please don't tell me you're holding off on changing the oils to try save $5 or $10.

    • Only recently acquired a motorcycle second hand but I am planning to run shorter rather than longer oil change intervals (manual says to change every 3000km). Have 10 oil filters on order from China which should hopefully arrive next week. It's not my primary mode of transport so just getting through a 5L bottle of oil (engine has 1L capacity) before I eventually sell the bike might be a challenge, depending on how many KM I rack up.

      • Might as well get some Chinese oil to go with those Chinese filters.

Motorcycle forums are filled with oil and filter debates.

Get a good filter. Use a MA rated oil.

Autobarn want $25 for a single K&N filter while the "Australian stock" 10x filters on eBay cost $19. Worth a gamble IMO.

@Cleremy: k&N are not the best oil filter

You have 125… your choice, but OEM filters are only about $15

            • @noob999: Might see if I can compare the quality versus the OEM part before installing in that case… Just learning the ropes of motorcycle riding and maintenance at the moment.

  • What bike is it? If you get decent oil, you won't need to run shorter changes. If you're going to sell it soon anyway, why would you want to change the oil so frequently?

    • Yamaha YZF-R125. I did not say I am selling the bike soon, just that one 5L bottle could theoretically last 12000km-15,000km.

      • Oh right.. I misunderstood your previous message. When you said 1L capacity, I thought you meant you had a 1000cc bike and would struggle to go through 5L before selling it. (A 1L bike has an engine oil capacity of about 3 litres, so 5 litres would be less than two oil changes).

I once put Rotella t6 in my bike - it sucked.
The clutch felt like crap, gear changes were horrible.

I've found Motorex oil the best - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Motorex-NEW-Mx-4L-10w40-Four-Str…

I use maxima full synthetic on dirt bikes. Only 1 litre at a time every 5 engine hours. Gear changes are sweet and I don't stress about keeping the throttle wide open. Awesome oils but always at RRP unfortunately.
