Mattress Body Impressions/Sagging - What Are People's Experiences

We have recently purchased a new mattress to replace an 8 year old one that had reached the point of having deep body impressions and being very uncomfortable. The new purchase has pretty major body impressions/sags already after only 3 months. We sleep on opposite sides of the mattress so end up with ditches on either side and a massive lump in the middle. Both our old and new mattresses had medium firmness with some level of pillowtop.

Whenever we've talked to the store they always have the same comment that body impressions are normal, are not a fault, and that we just need to sleep in the middle more. Do other people have this issue? If you're a couple that sleep on opposite sides how do you combat the ditches and lump in the middle (we try to sleep on the middle as much as we can buy always tend back to the edges)?

I still think significant body impressions/sagging after less than 3 months is a bit dodgey. We're hoping to exchange our current mattress under OMF 100 night guarantee, but just curious about other experiences and what should be 'normal'.

    Sagging happens with age.

It's not normal for a mattress to be sagging at 3 months. The warranty booklet might tell you how much indent is required before it's classified as a fault.

The store may tell you it's not a fault and they sound like they're just trying to fob you off, but have you tried calling the manufacturer and speaking to them directly? They may have a different idea of what a fault is.

I bought a Tempur mattress and the warranty booklet says that only indentations of 20mm or more are classified as defects. That's the booklet though - I don't know if there's any specifics in the consumer laws around this. Because if there is, it'll override what's in the booklet.

  • Been sleeping on the same mattress for 5 years. Never noticed any body impressions.

return it. you need something firm. You risk a sore back sleeping in a position like that.

  • Really need more information before providing thoughts.
Apart from the mention of medium firmness with some level of pillowtop, it would be helpful to know the type of mattress (innerspring, memory foam, pocket spring, etc.) that you now have.

  • Unless you both are very heavy people like 169 Kgs each there should be little sagging on a new mattress, however, have you checked what inner structure the mattress has, some have cheapo coils in pockets some have heavy springs in a matrix (better) I sleep on a double air mattress and can vary the firmness easily no sag even at soft settings

I've read online there are thresholds in terms of millimeters of "sag" before they will consider it a warranty claim. The big players even send someone out to assess. What does it say in your warranty documentation?

  • Mattress is OMF Grand Royale, medium. Has ok specs as far as coil springs etc. They're very insistent that it isn't a fault. I think the threshold for a fault is 3cm ditch. When I tried to measure the top layer is still very puffy so it only looks to be less than 2cm ditch.

    • I believe one of the ways to measure the dip is to lay something long and true on the mattress top. e.g. broomstick and then measure the gap. One of the folks I spoke to asked me to do that and send them photos.

    • I wouldn't spend that much on a spring mattress to be honest. They all sag eventually. Grab a memory foam, gel or latex mattress. I'd consider a koala mattress or similar if I was buying now, but I have no experience with them.

Mine started sagging on my side after 2 years.

I am a fairly dense guy though, both physically and otherwise.

  • OMG. I have this same issue and it's also with OMF. Bought two mattresses in July for the guest bedrooms. I slept in one for 2 nights as we were moving in and I thought they were FANTASTIC. (We like them super firm). After that they sat unused until end of August when I had my mum-in-law come to visit. Initially she loved it too, but in only six weeks of her using it, there are now indentations and the deepest one is definitely more than 20mm. Take note the mum-in-law is only 150cm and only around 50kgs.

I've called the OMF store and have been informed that this is just acceptable which I strenuously disagree with. They have instructed us to just keep using it and observe. I told them I had already switched to using the other spare mattress. It's been several weeks now and they're are apparently sending their area manager to come and check it out herself - but not until the 3rd week of October. As it is just a spare mattress I'm not fussed about it taking so long, but am quite disappointed that every answer they had given up until that point felt like they were just fobbing me off.

I just checked my invoice, apparently the model is called the "Comfy Sleep"

Instead of OMF, they should perhaps change their name to OMFG.

    • Interesting we're not the only ones. I've heard some good reports of OMF but after our one started turning South I found this website that has a few similar reviews, particularly for Grand Royale. Wish I'd manage to see it earlier!!

  • Maybe time to diet?

    • We're both relative lightweights. I've somewhat jokingly wondered if being tall and thin is worse.. like a thin sharp knife slicing through the mattress!

  • Thanks for comments everyone. Good to hear other people's perspectives. I am just surprised OMF think it's so normal that people will sleep all over the mattress! Advice to'just lie in the middle if you have ditches on the sides' doesn't really help..

  • I went to a lodge a claim with a matress and was told that it had to have an impression deeper than 25mm, and they would charge a $65 fee which had to paid to come out and look at it which would be refundable. I did the best I could to measure the depth of the impression and it was not greater than 25mm.
