Was advertised during Google's direct so not targeted. Definitely wait for a % off sale though.

    • Saving $89.94 on youtube premium

Could be saving % off RRP + $89.94 on YouTube Premium

        • Exactly there is pretty much a 99% chance we see these on eBay with a 20% off code. And also you're only saving $89.94 off full priced YT premium. Which I assume no one on this site is paying.

@Soluble: You forgot the part where they price jacked it so you only get 10% off on 20% off eBay coupon.

            • +1

@Bigboomboom: I bet you the difference that we see this is $219-20% before the 31/12

@Soluble: That is like saying I bet that 2018 car will be cheaper by 2019

This is pre order pricing, like the amazon 2 for 1, I think after this it will be up in the $300+ like the amazon show

      • $219 appears to be RRP? Any site stating that it's preorder pricing?

Glorified Chromecast apparently. Might make more sense for those price conscious to just use a 6 inch phablet on a $2 IKEA tablet stand.

    • +1

The Google Home is not a glorified Chromecast, this is a glorified Google Home. 2 very different things that interact with each other.

      • +1

I dont agree with him, but the home Hub is built on the Chromecast OS rather the Android Things which other Google Home devices like this.

        • What I meant is that it uses Chromecast OS and runs Amlogic chip that the Chromecast use, rather than Snapdragon like other smart displays from Lenovo and JBL use.

So yeah it is akin to Chromecast in some ways.

    • you're probably better off with a google home & tablet.

Seems like a great thing for the kitchen.

Does anyone know the standby power usage?

Also is there a way to pause and resume youtube videos with your voice?

    • Should be as you can pause and resume chromecast at moment.

    • 100% thats exactly what im thinking. Kitchen for me.

You should be able to voice control much like you can now with google home when listening to music or watching YT on the tele

    • Yeah, sort of like… Any phone from the last 4 years?

I've been using my lenovo yoga tab 2 like this for ages, animated real weather wallpaper with added weather widget with online radio widget lol… Welcome to 2018 Google.

    • +1

Yoga tab 2 anyways on, with good speakers, incredible array of microphones…. Yea I don't think so mate.

  • hands-on reports have it functioning like a Full size Google home but you can also press buttons and voince, not just voice. I think for certain people this'll fit in nicely, others will just buy a Tab + Stand plus im sure someone will release a launcher for other tabs soon enough that looks the same.

No front camera is a privacy plus!

  • wow…at $219, thats VERY well priced

  • +1

Missing video calls is a deal breaker for me. Otherwise seems a gimmick.

    • Agreed, surprised it's not part of the offering.

      • +1

Google deliberately left off any cameras because of privacy concerns…presumably because this is marketed as a bedroom device

        • +1

If privacy was the primary concern they could have just built in a camera cover.

  • -1

Pass, this thing don't have a cam for video chat. Just a dumb tablet with good speakers. I probably wait for Dell version in Australian market.

  • +1

Definite buy for me. No camera is a privacy win. Notebook, tablet and phone all have cameras if I need to make a voice call.

I'll hang out for the inevitable $149 sale at TGG or Harvey's, based on prices we've seen with the Google Home.

    • You can just cover the camera

    • +2

If you're concerned about privacy, you shouldn't have any google service or product. Google will hand over your data to authorities quite easily from what i've read.

  • Can this access a normal web page? I want to have it display my Home Assistant front end

    • Supposedly supposed to do similar as an automation hub

    • I'd love to be able to use this for HA dashboard too. Perhaps there's something that can be done with the casting component.

  • Google deliberately left off any cameras because of privacy concerns…presumably because this is marketed as a bedroom device.

  • I received my Hub from JB Hifi today.
It is much smaller than I thought it would be.
Might look at getting a Lenovo 10" as well.

  • Anyone know how to redeem the 6 month free Youtube premium trial? I just received my Home Hub, but can't find any info about this offer. It's not showing up on my offers page. I've never previously trialed it either.

    • Should be able to click on link and sign up
