Best Time, Brand and Supplier for Home Gym

It's been a long time coming. What initially started as a highschool boy's dream has turned into a well calculated and deliberated decision.

I need a home gym

I won't expand too much on why I use the word need but the short of it is I live in an area where the gym caters to seniors (lots of cardio and pool related equipment) or boxing gym.

My interest is primarily powerlifting but I do use Olympic lifts for core work and am starting to prefer the Oly lifts to compete in.

My budget is $10,000. To be included in this budget is
- power rack / wall mount and bench
- flooring and Olympic lifting platform
- men's, women's and technique barbell
- cambered curl barbell and trap bar
- plates (undecided details)
- change plates and collars
- barbell Jack and plate storage (no horns)
- optional concept 2 rower and dumbbells
- delivery. Set up not required.

The room is a standalone studio approximately 6mx6m. Three walls are glass (entry is on glass wall) and one solid double brick (no windows/entry). Wall height is 240 but vaulted ceiling so highest point is almost 3m. >10cm concrete slab so I'll be directly bolting the cage to floor. I don't want a high efficiency room where there's something in every corner. I want to keep it airy with sufficient space for two to work out together.

Electronics, lighting and decoration is a separate budget.

I am undecided whether is it more practical to have bumpers and steel plates or just go all bumpers. I am not a pro lifter so running out of barbell sleeve isn't a problem (if it ever is, I'll gladly empty my wallet.) I need ~110kg for Oly lifts and ~200kg for power lifts.

Do I want bumpers and steel or just go all bumpers?

Do I want to spend more on bars and get bearing bars or settle with bushings?

Has anyone had dealings with Rogue Australia or importers of Eleiko? (I'm quite smitten by the RML490)

Is it worth looking into other smaller brands?

Wall mount vs floor mount rack?

Any sales period I should hold out for?

I have tried asking in international fitness forums but the brands and layout isn't applicable to Australia. Australian fitness forums are mainly body builders and either no interest in home gym or sports lifting.

I thought I'd approach OzBargainers for advice primarily on supplier and brands, and to a lesser extent on the details of equipment. I know there is a fairly big fitness following here too and potential suppliers.

    Firstly,

I would only purchase one type of equipment, such as a power rack/fixed equipment … e.g. Don't go ballistic yet.
Try it out for a while and see if you still feel committed.
Many ppl get excited of having a home gym, spend heaps of money and then use it for about 3 months.
Then get over it and sell it for an 80% loss on Gumtree/eBay.
If you are still committed, then start filling out the rest of your gym. Sometimes, spending the full amount of expenditure can qualify you for a discount at the same outlet, which is good however all of their equipment might not be to your liking.

I have had a home gym for about 5 years, and still love using it.

There is an outlet that sells 2nd hand stuff and is commercial quality.
    https://www.graysfitness.com.au/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwxvbdBRC0ARIsA…

If you are not into 2nd hand stuff and want to buy new, not spend heaps on commercial stuff (e.g Life Fitness, Techno Gym etc) I have used Force USA and it is good enough for me.
    https://www.gymandfitness.com.au/collections/force-usa?gclid…
I have purchased from Gym and Fitness and the customer service is pretty good. I had a delivery of a bicep curl and the pad was slightly ripped. They gave me a replacement and I also kept the original.

I would purchase in person so it fits you well and you get a feel for it.

The links above are located in Melbourne as I assume where you live considering you are located in VIC.

    Cheers

    • Cheers mate. Good advice.

I am just modelling the gym to another private one I have the privilege of using. Incidentally, there were a few ForceUSA pieces and the owner isn't pleased with them.

(e.g Life Fitness, Techno Gym etc)

Not keen on machines but if I ever do get a few, it'll be Concept2. Techno gym is BIG bucks.

G&F are in Queensland unfortunately :( very surprisingly, there arent many gym suppliers in Melbourne. Only major commercial one is MA1 but they are boxing gym centric.

    • This is great advice

Find out what exercises you'll be mainly doing and finding equipment around that.

Also depending on your age - how long do you see yourself olympic/power lifting for?

Since you are looking at olympic lifting - would go more towards bumpers since you'll be dropping the weight a lot.

Start with any brand you can get stock off - if you don't mind start hunting on gumtree for second hand stuff.

    Also have a look at

Thanks. I thought they went out of business. I must be thinking of a different company or confused them with the kettlebell makers. A cursory glance tells me you may be on to something.

Find out what exercises you'll be mainly doing and finding equipment around that.
Powerlifting big4 - squats, deadlift, bench press, overhead press.

Oly lifts - snatch and overhead squats mostly. Biceps in the way of cleans :(

Also depending on your age - how long do you see yourself olympic/power lifting for?

Powerlifting probably for a few more decades. I have an uncle in his 60s still competing in BB and PL and killing it.

Since you are looking at olympic lifting - would go more towards bumpers since you'll be dropping the weight a lot.

That's what I'm thinking. I'll definitely need bumpers but they are $$$$ since CrossFit became de rigueur. Weighing up between just enough bumpers and getting steel plates for the big heavy power lifts.

Start with any brand you can get stock off - if you don't mind start hunting on gumtree for second hand stuff.

I like stuff to look nice too >< I know, $10k isn't much when you consider a 140kg Eleiko bar and bumper set is already $7k+.

Gonna have a look at the link again. :)

  • I went smaller brand several years ago and am still happy, i used cyberfit.com.au

The concept 2 i got direct when they had a yearly sale from memory.

    • When is this yearly sale?

      • Not sure if it was a yearly thing i purchased in late 2011

        • Oh damn. Should be any day now if historical is anything to go by.

Hey mate, I've got a similar space to you, it's 5.5x6.3 fully tiled with "rubber gym tiles". I've got a cable cross machine (wide one, not the compact variety), seated calf raise, leg press/hack squat/calf raise machine, rack, dumbbell set 1-40kg, concept 2 rower, FID bench and a glute-ham raise. I've got a mix of competition plates and rubber coated metal weights, a few barbells and ez curl bars. With all that stuff, I've still got heaps of room to move around - even got a couch in there! So I think you'll be right on space.

By the sound of it, you don't have any gyms near you, so you may find commercial second hand items hard to find (I've nabbed those up, great deals). Gym equipment is very hardy, so second hand equipment is an excellent choice. When I upgrade my second hand stuff, I have been able to sell it at the same price I bought it for.

I'm in the industry. Many sites offer industry discounts and don't ask for any form of proof, so that could be a solid way of getting a discount - e.g. https://gymdirect.com.au - use code TRADE to save 10%.

Unless you're going for brand new, full commercial spec on everything, $10,000 seems like oodles.

Full flooring is a great idea it both protects your space and makes your set up look awesome, 6x6 is 36 tiles - roughly $36/tile for "commercial" spec = $1296
I personally use the Force USA Commercial FID (FID means Flat, Incline, Decline) Bench - I got mine for $440 but they're listed at $499 - https://www.gymandfitness.com.au/products/force-usa-commerci…

I would say that an Olympic lifting platform is not necessary as those are just the same gym tiles you would already have on your floor - the wood platform is for your taste but forking out over $1,000 for a frame is ridiculous in my opinion

    • men's, women's and technique barbell - don't have a recommendation as it's way too personal for people these days but people seem to worship Rogue (I'm near the sea and I get a lot of surface rust on my gear, so "Cerakote" (a corrosive coating) is worth looking into if you're in a similar position.
    • cambered curl barbell and trap bar - Ez curl bar is pretty standard, I'd only look into a trap bar if you've used one and like it - I see heaps up on gumtree frequently from people who never use them.
    • plates (undecided details) - If you're doing Olympic lifts then bumper plates are going to be your friend. You mentioned "compete" so it may be worth investing in competition plates since your lifts aren't too expensive yet! Personally I have Pendlay but they seem to have died out - Rogue seems to have the same quality.
    • change plates - I don't have a recommendation
    • collars - I prefer lock jaw style collars. There are metal ones growing in popularity but I find they're too tight on bars and are annoying to put on and off - e.g. https://www.gymandfitness.com.au/products/force-usa-commerci…
    • barbell Jack and plate storage (no horns) - I keep my plates on my rack (it has the double sections) - I recommend Genesis Jack for barbell jack - most others are way too big for a home gym
    • optional concept 2 rower and dumbbells - I used to fiddle around with the adjustable dumbbells and it's a pain so I just bought several presets that I commonly used. I currently have a full dumbbell rack from 1kg-40kgs and it's amazing but bloody expensive - so you're just paying for convenience but make sure you have room (I locate mine behind my power rack). I have a concept 2 rower and it's great, I've even smashed the screen by accident and they boys at Concept fixed it quickly for about $60.

As for a Rack, you could drop $4.5k on one of these. Needing commercial quality, I was looking at ATX, Valkyrie and Rogue - all at similar builds and quotes. Rogue's monster light series have west-side hole spacing (makes adjustments for bench more plentiful) but they don't have any numbering on their uprights. ATX are beefy at 80x80cm and 11 gauge steel but they're accessories are limited compared to Rogue and expensive. Valkyrie are 75x75cm and 10 gauge steel - probably the most standard of the lot to get accessories for. Stay away from IronEdge, they went bankrupt not that long ago and I've heard that all their previous warranties are void.

    Hope that helps :)

    • That helped heaps.

Nice to know the space I have is going to work. I was contemplating moving the setup to the garage (about 3 times bigger) but I guess I can save that space for cars.

You mentioned Genesis jack, where did you get it from? I cant find a local stockist.

It's a US website, I got the black version and it looks mint!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TShXyY6ZtdU - that's a nice review of it. You can check their instagram page for stress tests

        • I've seen it and was surprised it ships to Australia… bit of coin though.

It does seem to wobble a bit with rough loading of plates. I'm really attracted to the Rogue Jack HD but again, shipping to Australia is exorbitant.

As for the platform, I think I'll build my own. Thinking of 50mm rubber mats where the weights would fall, and the rest of the gym in plywood.

I ended up ordering a new setup from Rogue. So the process has now shifted more to the discretionary extras, flooring and decking out the place.

          • @[Deactivated]: Oh bugger, I forgot to mention that Rogue has a "matte black friday sale" on black friday. Apparently the Australian store will be pretty unaffected but it could prove nice for a discount.

            • @Sir Flabo: The discounts aren't that great for Rogue anyway. I just got a custom quote as my order was over my stated budget. Worked out to be about 10% off.

I may even add to the order before it gets shipped. My stationary bike gets getting a slipped belt so I'm tempted to replace with the Echo Bike.

I am still tempted to get individual dumbells but I suspect they'll be more decorative than anything else. I'm a barbell kind guy.

              • @[Deactivated]: Honestly, if you've got the space and the budget they're worth it. It's a mental thing of, oh now I've gotta adjust the dumbbells a bunch of times for one exercise - so you just do something else

Cyberfit have good prices and if your order is over $500 then shipping is free. I haven't bought from them yet but I've heard good things from those who have

          • @[Deactivated]: Yeah it can wobble a bit, but I've found it stable. I also wouldn't be surprised if they run a discount through black friday/cyber monday this month
