Does warranty save you money?

should you always choose 5 years warranty over 3 years?

Cap priced servicing(Subaru) seems reasonable, just want to check with you guys is factory warranty always good?

    Not sure how warranty will save you money unless there is a critical manufacturing defect, you still have to pay for regular maintenance and service items no doubt.

    You are paying for the convenience of a new car (Warranty).

    Warranties are like insurance. Does insurance save you money? Depends if you need to use it.

    Holden did a faulty oil change spewing all the oil out of the engine days latter. The car had 2000 KLM until out of warranty.
    Motor was destroyed rather than replacing it they rebuilt knowing they only needed to see it make another 2000 KLM then they're free of any obligation.
    That's how a lot of those bastards roll.

      They aren't free of obligation once that 2000km mark has passed. ACL kick in.

      And depends what was destroyed as to whether they replace the whole engine. If the bare block itself is fine, why replace it. I doubt the pistons or rods were badly damaged, just new bearings needed. Crank may only have needed reconditioning around the bearings, and then new bearings. ETC

      Also what did they do? Sounds like they left the oil filter off. But the oil would just drain straight out of the engine while they were putting it in.

      • Company car the oil seal blew off at 100 KPH spewing oil down the freeway till the motor seized.
        back then it was 50,000 K warranty and it was on 48,000.

        • How the hell did a mechanic do that? I'm thinking it was the rear main seal? They sit in a groove, unless it came out while refitting the plate, and just bolted it back on without noticing.

          Would of hated to be driving behind you with oil on the road.

          • @AdosHouse: The oil filter seal probably a TA kid and didn't rub a bit of oil on the seal before fitting.

            • @hawkeye: I had a filter from a 4cyl put onto my V6 Camry years ago. Got about 15km before I noticed the clouds of smoke behind me. Fortunately the oil leaked onto the exhaust otherwise I may have driven a lot further otherwise. Got it towed back to the dealer and they replaced the filter and steam cleaned the underside.

              Needless to say I didn’t go back to that dealer ever again.

        • Not a warranty issue, was a negligent act on behalf of the Service agent. A rebuild is fine and the service agent is liable for any faults for a reasonable time after the rebuild.

      • If an engine runs out of oil there will be more damage than what you mention.
        How about rings and bores?

    Warranty only adds value if you are looking at selling the car after 3 yrs. A car with manufacturer warranty would be preferred in used car sales.
    Most mechanical defects would be noticeable very early and in most scenarios ACL would cover you.It could be a different scenario for electrical/electronics.

  • Can you wait before buying? Subaru often has deals at EOFY and early in new (calendar) year for 5 year warranty to be included.

    • they are offering 5 yr for a certain vehicle right now, so it's quite tempting

  • Warranty costs you money. Not spending on unnecessary things saves you money.

  • 1 - Check if the extended warranty is by Subaru. Usually extended warranty is by an external insurance company.
    2 - If it is by an external insurance company, their warranty is not at the same level of support and repair as Subaru. Usually it is way less.
    3 - When you get an extended warranty, find out by their T&Cs, that if you are committed to service your car at that particular dealer. You pay more for service than external which is designed to claw back for warranty extension IMO

    Normally, by my experience extended warranties pay back a little and not the total amount of repair. Then they don't like to honour warranty depending on item to claim. Read their PDS.

        Tbh, they should give the extended warranty for free. … as it commits you to service and pay top dollar to them..

  • Our 2013 Subaru XV comes with 3 year manufacturers warranty, also didn't realize till later but they included an extra 3 year warranty (not by Subaru, but Harrier) if you keep servicing with them. For the most part we did. Since the 3rd year, they've replaced our CV Joints (clicking sound) and most recently a wheel bearing (hum) under the extended warranty.

  • Longer factory warranty is always better. If Subaru offers a 5 years warranty over a limited time then it's worth taking over their standard 3 years.

  • I'd always go with a longer warranty period … just for peace of mind than anything else (just like an insurance policy)
    Yes it does mean it probably costs you a bit more, because you have to service your car at subaru - but their fixed price service isn't all that expensive. Furthermore, I was able to negotiate first 3 services (18 months) free as part of the purchase price (yes… i probably paid for it in the purchase price , but i did get a good deal overall)

        Sure, my 2 cents…

        1/ know what car you're after then check whirlpool. From memory there is a thread where everyone puts what they bought and how much and where. This gives u a good indication, but usually it'll be difficult to find someone buying the exact same car with options. This will help u know how much u should be paying. (there is also a site dedicated to this but I forget the name)

        2/ either use a car broker or one of those sites where they go get a whole bunch of quotes from various dealers on your behalf. Then take the quote (be it from a broker or quote service) and see if u can negotiate a better deal. U have something to fall back on but in my experience u should be able to do better. (aim for a better deal than what uve received, not just what the broker can do for you)

        • Thank you. tried a few brokers, didn't give me a competitive price, and a few didn't respond. i think they are not interest every model.

  • I wouldn't buy any new car with only a 3 year warranty. When choosing our latest car one of my criteria was minimum 5 year (factory) warranty.
