Accor Plus – Free Night Use/Tips?

Amex Platinum Charge Card holders probably know that they are NOW eligible for complimentary membership to Accor Plus which includes one free night’s accommodation stay at certain hotels. This is available even before the renewal of your Amex card at the new higher $1450 annual fee.
This free night can only be used by the member and cannot be gifted.
I actually don't feel comfortable staying in $400 hotels, but if it is a matter of 'use it or lose it', then I will shoot for the most expensive free night available.
I am wondering how people intend to maximise the benefit.
I assume that, before the renewal date, you can book 1 night for ‘after the renewal date’. And then after the ‘renewal date’ book another night. Hopefully giving you 2 sequential nights.
Any opinions/tips?

It'll be about that date game. Try your luck with Harbour side for NYE, Australia Day etc…

  • Not sure if the accor renewal date will align to your credit card renewal date. I suspect you will only get the one night within the first 12 months.

Book early - they have limited rooms available at the free rate.

Not all hotels offer a free night - some ask for a small payment (you will see this when booking).

IMO the best value is the 50% off dining at certain hotel restuarants. Great for seafood buffets or a nice big breakkie.

    • I just received my Accor Plus membership, expires 30 Sept 2019. My Amex Card renewal is March 2019. I was hoping to book before 30 Sept 2019 for 1 night after 30 Sept 2019, and then make another 1 night booking after 30 Sept 2019. Thus giving me 2 nights.

  • Accor Plus seems to be for ANZ and Asia Pacific region only.
I don't see the offer in Europe (Accor Plus itself and red hot room discount for hotels in Europe)

  • A trial booking for 1 night From Sep 30th to Oct 1st 2019 (1 night), resulted in this response:-
'You are unable to use your Stay Plus benefit for this stay as it expires on 2019-09-30. Please change the dates of your stay or continue your search without the Stay Plus.' And so it looks like 2 nights together cannot be done.

they are NOW eligible for complimentary membership

I haven't had this card for a couple of years now, but this was already a benefit before when the annual fee was $900 (it jumped to $1200 and removed my favorite benefit so got rid of the whole card the following year).

The free night is limited to mainly the cheaper hotels under their brand. The availability is a bit of a hit and miss. Just need to book well in advance. My best use was Novotel in Hong Kong, otherwise my other uses were just are the Ibis hotels.

    • Yes they took it away. But with the fee increase they have just added it again, and increased the travel credit from $400 to $450.
How do you think that it would go if I checked in myself, and asked for late check out etc. and then handed the room key over to my son and his wife for a special night away from home for them? Would I need to do the check out too or they do it? - I can't imagine any problems with that.

Who checks out of hotels anymore? That's what the key drop box is for.

Dirty AMEX - the best benefit they had (for me anyway) was the instand gold membership status for Cathay's frequent flyer programme. It seemed to be a little known benefit. That got me free business upgrades and cheap fares all the time. I would've kept the card for that even if they jacked the fee up to $2000/year.

In terms of checking in and then not staying, it should be fine. They don't come around to check after you've checked in. Just remember to bring your Accor Advantage card when you check in. It's a condition that they seem really anal about even if you've got your confirmation email and sufficient ID. A couple of times, I picked up my expired card from the year before and I had a hard time getting them to accept it (even with my passport and drivers licence as identification).

  • From my understanding:
    - The Accor free night expires at the same date as your annual renewal & it must be available at the time of your stay (i.e. you can't book before the expiry for a date after the expiry).
    - You cannot book two consecutive free nights (unlike Hilton)
    - It is only for the Asia pacific region & some hotels have minimum stay requirements (eg Tahiti is usually 3 nights - i.e. you must pay for two nights).

  • does any know how to login into the accor plus website? Got the card but no details on how to login

    • I believe it is the same login as the main Accor website.
