Whereas this deal has a one terabyte hard drive. DEAL #2, is also compatible with google assistant and has a higher night vision distance according to the specs of 30m instead of this deals 15m.

  • Deal #2 is a duplicate and it has been removed from the title.

  • Which system is the better of the 2 deals?

    • +2

I would say that this system is the better of the two deals, unless you would want to pay more for a harddrive in the other deal, because it only has a 32gb micro sd card for storage out of the box. Whereas this deal has a one terabyte hard drive. The other deal, is also compatible with google assistant and has a higher night vision distance according to the specs of 30m instead of this deals 15m.

      • Cheers buddy. Will hop onto this one.

        • For the second deal, here is the older product page, i think the only difference is no google assistant and it has 4.5 stars, Reviews Here, and for the first deal the reviews has 5 stars, Reviews Here

      • So can we attach an external USB hard disk?

        • +1

          According to Swan;
"The 32GB Micro SD card lowers the cost to you while giving you the flexibility to upgrade to any Micro SD card up to 128GB or add an external HDD up to 4TB to suit your needs."

So to answer your question, yes it is expandable via, external HDD.

        • +1

Yes, you can attach an external hard drive (up to 4TB) via USB or fit one internally.

      • +1

Night vision distance is 30m for both. Seems like sorcs on Kogan website is wrong.

        Verified it here & here

        • The post has been updated thanks.

          • @rupp1e: How does Google Assistant works with these cameras ?

            • @OzSikh: Well, I'm not entirely sure. But on swans website it says "Seamlessly control and view your security footage with Swann and Google. It’s as simple as “Ok Google, show me the front door.”" So I'm assuming that it would work on your phone and or a chromecast possibly…

  • Bought and installed system one without hdd for $179 directly from Swann last week or so. Very good system for that price if want cabled cameras which I did. Total cost way less than Arlo or Swann WiFi camera alone.

How easy to install them? Do you need to get an electrician?

      • You don't need an electrician if you can just hide the wires yourself, e.g. behind shelves, sofas, etc. If you can do that and screw things into a wall, you can install it yourself.

  • If you are buying these for night use security then you are wasting your money.

    • And your alternative suggestion is?

      • No but just stay away from this.

    • If you have motion-sensing outdoor lights, these would still work great as the area would be lit up if there's motion at night. Note that "great" is subjective - it's better than not having a system at all, but perhaps not as good as e.g. a Hikvision system. :)

      • But I guess if you want a security camera system to guard your home during night, you would at least install some permanent lights.

        • Permanently on? That would be ideal, but might be annoying to the neighbors. Motion-sensing lights are a good compromise I think.

          • @eug: I'm thinking of installing the cameras inside, maybe car dash cameras as they are cheap and work very well during night.
GPS with time, slot for memory card, software manager, everything is included.
And a light to the front door won't bother anyone, just a crazy idea for now.

Car dashcams will not show anything in very dark situations as they don't have IR illumination. There are some dashcams that do, but they'd be crap-quality ones as good manufacturers know it's silly to point IR leds directly at a glass surface in front of the lens.

In low light you'd probably get a better image from a dashcam, although you'd need to leave the lights on for that.

You also won't get notifications on your phone if motion is detected, and if a thief sees the dashcam and steals it, all your footage is gone. With a DVR system like this, you can at least hide the DVR somewhere.

In my specific case the front door which looks to the road side is well served by public lights and I can assure you that my dash cam with Sony chip and lens does a great job with low light.

As I said I would position the camera inside so the only downside I see is the lack of motion detection even so it would be pointless as the cam would record 24/7, its system automatically overrides the older recordings and creates new ones.

Oh, so you want to record outside the front door where it's lit by street lights? Or do the street lights shine into your house and light up your front door area? You mentioned installing them inside and I assumed you'd turn off your indoor lights at night.

I can assure you that my dash cam with Sony chip and lens does a great job with low light.

Mmm, all my dashcams use Sony chips and they're just OK in low light. Detail is destroyed by noise reduction, and when it comes to cars, low dynamic range means you can't always read number plates when the other car's headlights are on. That could also mean if the back of a person is lit by street lights, their face would be in shadow which would make it harder to capture detail. That said, it could work perfectly fine in your situation of course; every house is different. :)

As I said I would position the camera inside so the only downside I see

Don't forget to take into account a person's face being backlit by the street lights.

is the lack of motion detection

Having to sift through hours and hours of footage would be a bit of a chore too. Motion detection means you can more easily find useful events.

The 5mp version is also on sale at a good price. The 8ch DVR supports 4k cameras too.

Video showing day and night quality:
    https://youtu.be/A0HsfRSZRVM

    • The 5mp is at a good price, but is still over double the price. It would be better but it does cost more.

      • True that however the DVR and camera quality is the real difference. Really depends on what you're willing to spend and if you need the extra storage, extra channels and much better cameras

    • I'm not really convinced as the video only shows a few seconds during night while it mostly shows during daylight.

      • Not Swann cameras but a good comparison on the different resolutions
        https://youtu.be/CD0QS6xd2D0

        • Pointless review only done during daylight while a security cam is more important during night.
My $120 car dash cam with Sony chip does much much better during nigh (and morning) than what I can see from RRP $1,299 Swan's video.

      • +1

Because the night video quality is rubbish. I have a Swan 2MP set that's why I know.

    • This is POE version as well, which is good for everything running on the same Cat cable.

  • DVR vomit

  • I have been using the Xiaomi XiaoFang. I find them to be great.

    • Mine isn’t working well with the recent updates. How do you overcome it?

  • Black model $229 from Bing Lee. Price has been the same for a couple of weeks now. https://www.binglee.com.au/swann-swdvk-444804b-4-channel-sec…
