We are thinking about moving to Melbourne and buy a house. I work on IT and my wife in Admin. Basically, we want to live near the city and thinking Point Cook might be a good option but we do not want to spend more than $580K - $600K.
Which Are Some Good Suburbs to Live for a Young Working Family in Melbourne?

add to this, Point Cook traffic in and out onto the freeway is a joke. Avoid it at all costs if you can. I live past Geelong and it takes about an hour each way into Melbourne, presuming the West Gate isn't too bad.
You'll be lucky to find somewhere for that price close to the city. Seddon and Williamstown are very family friendly - but, at this price out of your range.
What are housing prices like in Geelong at the moment? I'm a Geelong girl, originally, and I think that is a pretty good option for people rather than going Frankston, Dandenong, etc. Beach side suburb with reasonable train service into Melbourne proper.
Reasonable. I live further out, Drysdale. You're right about the beach, you can't beat it.
@o53djz7qTPY4der: They have done a lot of work, Eastern Beach was very run down when I was a kid. It is also a gateway to the coastal beaches.
Look into Footscray area but you will struggle to get any house for that budget near the city.
Footscray is more like $700k for a unit/townhouse, house maybe $800k-$1mil. 600k gets you an apartment or small unit/flat.
Im also interested moving to melbourne - hows footscray to live? But im single, looking at 750k range. I just cant get over the fact apartments are 750k over in Syd…
Litter everywhere and its full of homeless and druggies but a lot of people think its cool now.
The surrounding suburbs like Yarraville and Maribyrnong are nice.
Aah! Perfect - thank you!
@Changskies: It depends what you are after. Footscray has some really nice pockets, and soon will be flooded with more apartments close to the station. The main strip is fine, and there's lots of new "hip" places and cafes opening up. The only areas that I think most people would class as dodgy is Nicholson St (Little Africa section), Leeds St and the area around Footscray Plaza which for some reason attracts lots of shady characters. Other than that, its just like any other suburb.
Broadmeadows mate.
no.
Glenroy if your happy to pay Tolls to go anywhere
Have you looked at Manor Lakes, as new pretty much as Point Cook but has a VLINE into the city - so much better than Metro and faster too. Great area
If you are willing to compromise a bit you can get a 3 bedroom unit in forest hill/nunawading if you are lucky for $600 - 650k what with the market being terrible right now you may pick up a bargain.
We were facing the same dilemma back 5-7 years ago - personally I think buying a unit in the east with decent transport options is better than a house in Epping, Point Cook or otherwise in terms of stability of resale, capital growth and potential upside. 5-7 years ago the same unit would have been worth $450k and is now $600k today whilst Epping would be similar now but it took a long time to get there and will suffer with the market as it is now whilst units in the east won't due to convenience, access to schools and facilities etc. In boom times some 2-3 bedroom units in the east have approached $800k or more.
A unit is also cheaper to run than a house and that makes a difference in your ability to save and repay. Consider that some growth areas have higher council rates etc. too. If you save up and repay quick, are willing to roll up your sleeves to do some smart improvements and then upgrade to a house & land during the next property downturn you can move up the housing ladder quicker.

Point Cook is quite far from the city however you will probably find a decent house for that price. Generally the closer you live to the city the pricier your the houses would be. Maybe an apartment would be best suited?
