On a recent trip from Germany, Aldi and Lidl supermarkets was selling Smirnoff Vodka 700ml for $6.99 Euro. That's AUD$11.31 each. Store branded vodka are even much cheaper. The same Smirnoff vodka is selling locally for AUD$49.99. I am sure alcohol in Germany is also being taxed but why are alcohols so expensive in Australia ?

Tax on 700ml, 40% spirit is around $20
Montemaj, probably not the post to have a full discussion on but Australia has additional taxes on alcohol, above the normal GST etc, based on alcohol content.

My understanding is that alcohol sale and consumption has costs to society in terms of pressure on the healthcare system and alcohol related crime etc. We balance this by taxing more. The same thing is the case with cigarettes.

I feel like vodka is one of those things that has a rather dramatic rate of diminishing returns with regards to quality after a certain price point. Especially if you are using it as a mixer.

No shit. One is bargain and one is premium. The difference between a $20 bottle and a $60 bottle - a 300% difference - bottle will be obvious, but the difference between a $60 bottle and a $180 bottle is a lot harder to distinguish.
Frankly, this is true for a lot of alcohol. There is only so pure or refined or whatever before people cannot tell the difference.
