Locked Optus Phones

Hi All,

Just thought I'd share my experience and wanted to know if anyone else know any other loopholes.

So I purchased a Samsung Galaxy J2 Pro locked to optus last week and didn't realise it was locked till I actually made the order. Optus charges $80 for unlock code for devices under 6 months, $25 after that. Or alternatively spend $80 worth of optus prepaid recharges and it's free(not really!)

Being an ozbargainer I searched online websites and eBay with no success. There were some websites that looked "legit" but cheapest I could find was about $50. I found a dodgy site that quoted $6.95 yet to be emailed that they couldn't do it, PayPal has refunded me the money (seem like a scam but that's a story for another day)

Having dinner today and about to crave in and just pay for the unlock from Optus, I thought what happeneds if I use a family members account that has already been on optus prepaid for years. Chat online with optus and asked them "if I was a long time optus prepaid customer and I wanted to purchase a locked optus phone will there be a fee and they answered NO" closed the chat and made a new enquiring with family member DOB and name and optus number they gave me the unlocking code for free.

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to share this loophole for those that might need it.

TLDR: you can unlock optus locked phones for free using details of a long time customer.

Wonder what other loopholes oz bargainers have?

If you are a long time Optus customer, you might try ask them in chat to unlock it as you are about to travel overseas for work and need to use the phone. They might unlock it for free.

  • Have a look on ebay. Sometimes you can unlock it much cheaper. I heard it can be done for cheaper. Def not worth paying the $80

I think you can put a new fresh Samsung rom on it and it gets rid of bloat and lock, still though this is a great loop hole, never thought of it, cheers!

TL;DR OP random buys phones from Optus, complains thats its locked and costs money to unlock.

  • Tried it once with Telstra, didnt work though. The phone buyer's name needs to be the same as the long-time customer…

  • A loophole with Telstra which I have used many times… You can use a sim without an credit, to access the premium services they spruke to you and then ask you to pay a certain amount every day or every month etc for access.
Telstra sends a message "you have subscribed to *** site and will be charged $$$ per day" etc. But with prepaid sim that is out of credit, you just get it for free.

Particularly useful if you have a spare phone laying round and don't have wifi or sim with data. You can still access some things at least, until they cancel your subscription due to lack of funds. Which happens eventually of course..
