Coffee Machine Purchase Help

Hey Everyone,

Seeking some recommendations/advice please.

Trying to help out a friend who’s after a coffee machine for his small retail store. They mainly want to sell Cappucino’s, Hot Chocolates & Latte’s in takeaway cups (espresso, hot milk, hot water). They already have electricity point & plumbing installed/operational.

Budget is not very high (maybe around $500?) in terms of the cost of the machine. And it wouldn’t be a fast paced high volume business for takeaway coffee’s.

They’re preferably after something new so that warranty is included in case something goes wrong down the road with the machine.

Cheers!

That's not very much money for a commercial machine, even a sparsely used one. You will get a max 3 months warranty on a new domestic machine when it is being used commercially. I have no recommendations, sorry, your price point is just too low.

Dont the wholesellers offer free machine if you use their beans exclusively?

    • Generally they offer this only if you sign onto a 3-5 year contract and are able to do a certain amount of kg worth of beans a week/month. Unlikely option for these guys as it looks like coffee isn't very high on the priority list.

  • A realistic price range would be $1500-$2000 for a used coffee machine + grinder. $500 barely gets you a domestic machine new.

At $500 you're going to look at domestic machines at best.
Although with commercial use, it will void the warranty.

You'll be looking at some damaged second hand machines at $500 and try get it working from there. Although still no warranty.

  • Tell him not to bother if he wants to spend under $1000. The minimum he needs is a Breville, he really needs to spend about $2000 on a good commercial machine.

  • He needs to go and talk to a commercial wholesaler about how to buy a second-hand commercial machine.

The Breville or sunbeam combo often talked about on here are possibly ok but you will be risking your warranty by using it in a shop.

  • He needs to budget at a minimum around $2000 for a half decent machine. However, in that price region, you're looking at domestic use machines that will not be warrantied for commercial use.

For $500 he might be lucky to find a second hand machine from someone. That might be fine, but it isn't going to be new, and there's going to be no warranty. There may also be repair costs required.

    best coffee EVER
    EVER

    • Ok - I'll stick with what I've got thanks.

    • Lol my friend is actually considering this as they would sell around 5 coffees a day max.

      • get a pod machine if its 5 a day

        • Don’t. The coffee tastes bad and no one is going to pay more than $2 for a pod machine coffee.

A home espresso machine will be fine.

Tell your friend to do a couple of barista classes as well

        • We stayed at a caravan park where they had a pod machine available to purchase coffee from. It was either $1 or $2 each. I tried one and threw it down the sink real fast, it was horrible. It looked like it should have been reasonable, it was a proper commercial sized one, but it was utterly foul. And then it broke and was out of action anyway.

  • I have seen a few used Rancilio Silvia with grinders for around this sort of price lately. So you can get a decent quality machine and grinder for that ballpark, but it's definitely going to be used.

    • The Rancilio Silvia is a wonderful machine, but it requires a bit of expertise to get the best out of it. It also doesn't cope at all well when making multiple coffees in a row, it needs to cool down a bit between uses. However, if it is unlikely to be used to make more than 2-3 coffees at a time (1 x 2, and 1 x 1, or 2 x 2 at a stretch), it could work. You have to wait a few minutes between making coffee and steaming the milk, so you need to allow a minimum of five minutes to make 2 coffees including clean up.

They will certainly be more likely to identify the ideal unit.
