Baumr-AG Self-Propelled 750sxi - Thinking of Buying for Elderly Father-in-Law

Hi All,
My father-in-law (has bad shoulders and can't pull start a mower) is in need of a new mower and i was thinking of purchasing an BAUMR-AG 18” Electric Key Start Self Propelled Lawnmower 4Stroke from Edisons on EBAY, with the current 20% off this would only be $303.20, which is pretty bloody cheap for a key start self propelled mower, now obviously i don't expect it to last 20 years like his old Victa, but, i was wondering if anybody had purchased one of these and could give me an honest review. I have heard both bad and good things about the brand depending on who you talk to.

  • will you buy your father in law a ride on mower if he has bad knees?

    • He doesn't want a ride-on, and I think it would probably be overkill for his yard anyway.

I think what Archi was subtly trying to get at was that a self-propelled mower isn't a long-term solution for the situation because your father isn't getting any younger and even a self-propelled mower will take some effort and strength to use, and you should be looking into longer-term, more sustainable solutions.

To put it a bit indelicately,

i don't expect it to last 20 years like his old Victa

I don't think this is going to be an issue.

FWIW this brand and the multiple other ones that are distributed by that same company are renowned as utter rubbish. If you've heard good reports it's likely from folks who don't know better.

Almost impossible to get parts, poor build quality, warranties not honoured, no after sales service. Well documented online - e.g Whirlpool.

Don't make his last mower a piece of crap - it's very cheap and THATS YOUR WARNING - it's too good to be true. Get decent 2nd hand or entry model from bricks and mortar retailer .

Mark my words buy that and you'll regret it badly.

PS. IMHO get him the brushless Ozito mower kit from Bunnings:
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-power-x-change-18v-brushle…
    - $249, so cheaper!
    - 5yr warranty via a known retailer
    - Has excellent reviews via Whirpool
    - Should be up to the task as is - but if needed just get another battery.
    - Is light enough that it's going to be superior to that body self-propelled unit
    - Essentially bulletproof, unlike that other POS, which would have stalled and had all kinds of issues….no consumables either, so easier for him.

And no pull start so easy on his shoulders. Can't beat it IMHO for him (that said you didn't give ANY info on his yard size, topography, grass etc but this is a cheap but good model - buy one of the better ones if you feel it's warranted).

    • Yeah you're welcome OP - ain't that hard to say thanks when total strangers assist you from buying a trainwreck.

Baumr-AG is an operation started by an Anglo to import Chinese product…he gave his company a German sounding name to give it some sort of pseudo engineering legitimacy.

I bought the 218cc/21 inch self-propelled in 2015 (on a special from Edisons, EBay for $385 delivered. Being a pretty good repairman, I thought that whatever problems came up I could deal with them!

Now, firstly the unit I received had no (real) throttle, I had to adjust the engine speed through the choke, the wheels were cheap, the chassis slightly off so one of the rear wheels was not flat on the ground…. but when I figured a "special sequence" to finally get the unit started…it worked, sort of OK, for about 2 years, notwithstanding several minor running repairs, however, when the drive chain stopped working earlier this year, it became the heaviest push-mower in Australia.

I am trying to find time to source a spare drive belt and repair the unit at present, although I am not really sure if its worth it!

My advice is NOT to buy one the Baumr units, unless either you or your FIL are engineers and go the electric "Flymo" type units….they are light and have exchangeable battery packs, and of course, do not require pull starts!
