What are the advantages to booking a car in Japan where the transport system is very good? To visit really remote areas? Isn't parking a nightmare in pretty much all the metro areas?
Genuinely curious as have a trip to Japan coming up and haven't planned it yet.
To get out of the cities and travel to places not covered by PT.
I hired a car in Kyushu last year. It was awesome. Saw so much.
Parking isn't a nightmare in metro areas, there is paid parking- It is available. Usually small parking areas ~~¥600 a night.
Parking is cheaper in central Tokyo than Brisbane CBD.
I lived in Japan for 4 years and owned a car whilst there.
The advantages are emptying your wallet at an alarming rate to pay for all the toll roads you will encounter and wondering why the top speed on the highways is limited to 80kph.
toll roads aren't that expensive.
and - "top speed on the highways is limited to 80kph." - yeah, nah. that's so wrong.
I come from WA so i find the tolls high! But I understand it's relative. I found anywhere from $10 to 30 depending on island/distance.
And technically the speed limit is 80. My Japanese was quite comfortable us doing 100. Freaked out a bit more us doing 120. I did see cops pulling people over for something. Ymmv =p
Don't know how you can say that the toll roads are not that expensive. Narita to Mt Fuji is >A$70 each way. Narita to Kyoto >A$160 each way.
I love driving in Japan.
As long as you have the time, the regular highways (50KPH) are free, and while longer are often more scenic as you follow rivers or go over mountains, rather than
spending time in tunnels or have the views blocked by noise walls on the toll roads.
You need to get over the thought of free street parking as it is almost non existent in cities, but parking lots are cheaper than most Australian cities.
Surely, toll roads couldn't be worse than Sydney?
$30 each way for an 1 hour trip from Central Tokyo to Mito
Japan Expressway Pass is like a JR Pass for highway. It is a bargain too.

$250 per week on tolls is a bargain?
Japanese highway is expensive. Tokyo - Osaka return costs about $250. If you drive further, it is a bargain.
JEP only useful if you travel long distance across different prefectures. There are many other expressway passes available if you only visit certain part of Japan.
Tohoku Expressway Pass (TEP)
Kyushu Expressway Pass (KEP)
Hokkaido Expressway Pass (HEP)
Central Nippon Expressway Pass (CEP)

Keep in mind that most metro expressways are excluded.
There is a company "Tocoo" offer a ETC expressway pass that covers all expressways in Japan (except those do not have ETC electronic payment), but you have to rent a car from them (they are agent). They are cheaper than JEP but you have to compare the final price yourself.

Are you going to use the name Sour Nipples in Japan?
cheers, been looking at rentals in december! I need to rent 3 cars for 14 people :|
I used Orix car rental a couple of times in Japan. Their prices are very competitive when you go on their Japanese website(select Japanese in language).
Last time we were there, we rented a small car for 4200 yen a day for 3 days.
Having a hard time translating that site when in Japanese and can't do a one way rental from Kyoto to Tokyo on the English site.
it is very expensive to do one way rentals in Japan. the relocation fee is extremely high. I did extensive research on this last year.
if you are doing a tokyo-kyoto-osaka circuit and only staying in the "city" - i.e. not going rural, then fly, train or bus.
I like the overnight buses. - inexpensive, I find it easy to sleep on them, save a nights accomodation as well
Yeah, no choice. It's about 24,840 yen which is just over $300. Plus if I return the car back to Kyoto and catch a train back to Tokyo, it'll be way more expensive for 6 people. We could hire the car from Tokyo to Kyoto leg as well but wife wants to catch at least one bullet train for the experience.
@shagaroo: As an alternative, you can also try rentalcars.com. They do price comparisons on a number of rental companies. You do need to prepaid for the rental when booking, but the cost is fully refundable if you decide to cancel up to a few days prior to getting the car.
If you do go down this path. Use cashreward to get 7% back.
I haven't had a look at prices for Nippon Rent-A-Car yet but I found Toyota Rent a Car good value. I made a booking with them on the weekend for January but can cancel for free any time up until 7 days before the booking starts. Will check yours out as well. Thanks
It's still more expensive than other car rental agents after discount, but it maybe cheaper for you so make sure you compare.
Always check these travel agents. IMO Japanese websites are always end up cheaper (just use Google translate / Chrome if you cannot read any Japanese)

Tocoo! is pretty good as a search and book engine. Be careful of their fee though, not outrageous but just be aware of it
Thanks, was about to book and this came at a great time
