Samsung 128GB USB 3.1 Stick Bar Plus $49 @ JB Hi-Fi

950

I was having a look at the new catalogue and this stood out. I checked previous posts for this product: some were cheaper, some were not. If you're old fashioned like me and actually walk into a store to buy things then this looks like a good deal. Add on $4.95 if you want it via mail, but then it would be cheaper to get it from Amazon or, as Russ notes below, Newegg.

The $14 Dell WM126 Wireless Mouse might also be worth a mention?

  • Great price for local. Managed to grab one of these from Amazon last month when they were $38.
Pretty quick at 290MB/s read, though write is only 40MB/s. Build quality is great too.

    • +3

With such low write speeds, I am leaning towards buying/using 2.5 inch SSD in a USB case. The size isn't going to suit everyone, but for those that need the write speed it is a better option. I can also repurpose older SSDs now prices are coming down.

Another alternative is microSD cards in a small USB 3.0 card reader. Samsung EVO Plus micro SD have 80MBps write speed, but only slightly higher read speed. This way I can reuse micro SD cards in other devices.

      • +5

The Samsung T5 SSD drives may suit, small and speedy

      • The size isn't going to suit everyone

You can buy M.2 enclosures now.

        • +1

M.2 enclosures have been around for a while.
NVMe is where you're going to have trouble. Be careful what SSD you buy.

        • Wouldn't the USB speeds bottleneck the enclosures?

          • +1

@xuuj: Yes but an M.2 enclosure would have a much smaller form factor than a SATA enclosure
USB3.1 tops out around 625MB/s; still faster than a USB thumb drive

    • That write speed is very disappointing. No improvement over the previous generation and basically USB 2 speed.
If they had improved the write speed, I would have picked one up. These are good to have on a keyring.

      • -1

Agreed. But USB2 has never been 40MB/s.

        • +2

USB 2 tops out at around 40MB/s. I have USB 3 drives which will do this speed on a USB 2 connection.

          • -2

@O15: Nope. Maybe once, in a lab test.

            Real world is ~30MB/s max.

            • +1

@Ulysses31: I'm really not sure why you're disputing this??? I told you I have experienced these speeds myself, certainly not in a lab test.

I just copied a file off a flash drive, in a USB 2.0 port, which transferred at 40-41MBps.

              • -2

@O15: Because it never happened, to anyone ever.

      • Seems to be a lot of USB 3 drives from Samsung and Sandisk with fast read speeds but incredibly slow write speeds. Wasted a few $ now on useless large drives, which are only used now for transferring very small files.

        • It's a bit annoying.
My fastest flash drive is an MX-LX 128GB which I got a few years ago. Does around 200 read and 180 write.

I'm aware other fast flash drives exist, but they're usually much chunkier. The MX-LX is very slim.

Even the cheap PNY drives which used to frequent the front page of OzBargain have much faster writes than this Samsung drive.

        • I think the only fast Sandisk USB drives are the Extreme range, but their pricing reflects this. The Extreme Pro is faster that the Extreme Go.

          • @trongy: I have 32 and 64 extreme 3.0 drives. They aren't recognised by my TV, Fetch or car. Bought an ultra dual type c/USB3.1 and thats not recognised by the car or Fetch either. Yet no issues with the normal or slow usb sticks

            • @Sammyboy: Sounds more like an issue with the formatting. That or you got incredibly unlucky with your devices. I have a Sandisk Extreme Pro 32 and a 64, and over the years I have used them in a bunch of TVs from LG, Sony, Samsung and Hisense, My PS4, My Car (Pioneer) along with a host of other devices, never had an issue provided I was using a filesystem that was supported by the device in question. Did you try NTFS or EXT3 for FetchTV? Both are supported.

Mann I really don't need anymore USBs to my collection but 128GB..

  • I need more. IM constantly missing USBs. I need to buy bulk 8-16gb. Any suggestions?

  • Is this better than the one from Amazon?

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Samsung-MUF-128AB-AM-Plus-128GB/dp…

    • +2

I got mine a few days ago. Read/Write speeds of 309.5MB/s & 66.22MB/s (using CrystalDiskMark)

      • which one? amazon or JBH

        • The amazon one, The Samsung Fit Plus drive

  • Thanks mate just what I was looking for. Bought 2x

The timing is just perfect for me.
Nice price better than ebay or staticice.
If I can get 40MB constant xfer rate that will shite all over my SanDisk unit (if SanD gets recognised in the computer port) and it won't fall apart like me plastic sandisk unit.

If I get 290MB read I will be rapped.
$93 currently on AU Amazom or $53.82 inc postage on Prime?

Is Samsung having a go at Rocket Man to their north with this design?

  • Seen these sold cheaper elsewhere, still a good price though. I have a 256GB, it is okay though write speeds are epic slow for its rated capacity.

Will be waiting it out for a good deal on a 512GB and ideally would like to see 1TB USB flash drives being released…

    • +1

      It won’t be long now. I think it’s a good price. 10 years ago I paid $50 for a 4GB USB drive.

SanDisk have a 512GB SD but it’s about $400. I reckon by the end of next year we should have 512GB USB drives.

1TB won’t be for a while. I reckon 2020 will see the arrival of a 1TB SD card. Probably 1 year later a micro sd and USB drive.

Flash memory is still very expensive.

  • so tempting, damn you ozbargain

Sorry OP, appears to be cheaper at NewEgg, AU$40+GST=AU$44, with free shipping:
    https://www.newegg.com/global/au/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N…

Thanks to Chibot for informing us that Newegg is an option: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/406235

    • Hardly worth saving a couple of dollars especially considering some have had issues with Newegg shipping. Most would be happy paying an extra $5 to get it today from a physical store.

      • Who is ‘most’?

        • +2

          ME!

    • If you were really sorry, you'd revoke your neg

  • Anyone know what the difference is with this one from HN? I can’t seem to get the gist of the pricing….

Harvey Norman Tax I guess; it's the exact same one.

      Greed?

    • -8

Some retailers, when they want to have a sale, create a second listing for the items on sale. When the sale is over, they delete the second listing.

That way, they make more profit from corporate buyers who may have the items bookmarked. If they go to the bookmark, they pay full price even though the item is available cheaper.

      • +1

He’s discussing listings from two different sellers

    • JB is showing their "ticket price" as $89, which is only $9 less than HN. And maybe that extra $9 is just so they can also put it on sale for this $49 price and then say it's half price?

  • For good read/write speeds at an affordable price the Sandisk Extreme Go (SDCZ800) is meant to be pretty good. I’ve been waiting for one of these to go on sale for the last few weeks without any luck :(

  • WTB USB-C drives

  • I bought a smaller 64GB from a HN special a while back and this device is no longer working for me. I would not buy one again.

    • I've been running 2 x 64gb versions for years, 24/7 without issues (as an operating system drive, and very small mysql db)

      • Does the slower write speed affect the OS running at all? I've been thinking about using one for Bootcamp but the write speed seems to be only 40mb/s.

        • It certainly would affect it, yes. Mine is running a server/nas but I wouldn't want to run Windows off of it.

  • Cheers OP, grabbed 2!

  • Got one! Cheers!

  • Went in-store and bought 2.
Formatted as NTFS peak speeds are 290MBs read and about 50MBs write

  • Thanks OP great deal!

  • It would be good if someone can tell if this is better than the Amazon deal

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Samsung-MUF-128AB-AM-Plus-128GB/dp…

  • had the previous generation one, (silver) can't complain much, the writing speed is horrible… i just create a win10 IOS on it with all my software. it is super handy when you have to accidentally repair your friends pc when visiting…

These are great USB Keys. As others have mentioned, they are not really that fast writes but they are durable. Not like the last key that I owned that had a sex tape I made on it that fell off my keychain somewhere.

I now separate USB keys into two drives and BitLocker one. I'm sure someone is enjoying my sex tape out there.

    • mate u did a bang up job greatly enjoyed it thx

  • Thanks OP, grabbed one
