why do people need the record function?

    • +2

To record (or pause) TV shows?

Some shows like Gogglebox is on catchup.
Also handy to FastFoward over ads

    • I use it for news and sport. I also use it so I can pause tv and rewind it as I watch. Example: I am cooking dinner, and I hear something I want to watch, so I just rewind the show for a few minutes. Or, when I go to cook, or the kids ask me a question or need help, I just pause where I was, and resume.

If you don't watch sport and news, or don't have kids then maybe not for you.

  • we can use any modem tv and buy a 1tb hdd for $55 to record, right?

Its pretty clunky way to do things. I tried after Optus bricked our old fetch. You couldn't change channel when recording, the EPG was fairly inaccurate and often missed the end of shows that go over time.

The nice thing for us old farts is the ability to pause & rewind tv. Record series, record multiple channels. And there's built in catch up tv, Netflix, stan apps, dlna support (watch stuff off your NAS). There's free older movies every miynth. And every so often they give you premium channels for free.

Generally the recording function built into TVs isn't as nice or as simple to use as the Fetch TV - it also has 4 tuners so you can record multiple channels at once. Whether or not 4 tuners are necessary is a whole other discussion.

The other issue you may run into with just a HDD and a TV is the size of the drive i.e. some TVs (particularly cheaper brands) may not recognise HDDs over a certain size (often 500GB).

    • I have a Samsung TV (last year's model) with $70+ 3TB portable HDD.

Recording problems: series record occassional fails to record (eg 2 episodes back to back, may only records first if EPG changes), as HDD fills access seems to be slower, can't view program guide or other channels while recording - just play a previous recording or what is being recorded, scheduled recordings sometimes disappear requiring reset, only 30 recordings can be set up, recordings can only be played at that exact TV,… Known issues in forums😞

Glad I have a PVR (Panasonic Twin Tuner 1TB $10 @DS before closed down) & used many other PVRs - lots of functions & easier to use.

Use both to record. But use TV for catchup & apps.

  • If anyone has access to GoodGuys Commercial, have them new for $316 (free c&c or +$8 del)

There's also the Fetch Mini for $119 + delivery($9.95) if anybody was looking for a cheaper version. Stock is about to run out though!

  • I have this box. Its slow AF… I have no idea why people whould pay over 250 dollars for it……… (i got free with my optus contract)

    • It’s a little slow but fit for purpose. Your expectations are a little high.

    • It's not free. Just on loan. If you ever leave Optus then you need to return it. This offer you get to keep.

      • gladly return this junk - but yes it does work…

  • Just placed an order , why does title say out of stock?

  • +1

This box is probably the best I've seen in Oz that offers both FTA, Netflix, Stan and fetch TV. It can do downloaded media but imo get a seperate media player for that content.

    Peter

  • FYI, back in stock.

  • this or the fetch mini for $119?
