4G on Docomo in Tokyo is terrible on an iPhone x, assuming this is the same card as the one sold on klook. One bought off simsdirect uses the SoftBank network which was infinitely better.

    • I used the one from Klook last month, was incredible.

    • Probably just your phone.

    • i had the welcome japan sim from docomo 2 weeks ago in Tokyo - 4G was good.

      • That's weird. Did you guys download some app as per the instructions to change the apn?

        • No. Just worked

    • Docomo shapes (reduces the speed) of their foreigner SIMs to point where you might as well use a can and string for telephony. It's so bad sometimes I actually routinely fail Speedtests.

    • I've used the b-mobile visitor sim (21 days, 5gb, $35-40) the last few trips and it's been great.
Wifi is much more prevalent now too, so unless you're planning on streaming whilst walking, massive amounts of data isn't as important as it used to be.

    Hi Rep,
Any deals for May/june next year?

    Any Deals for January?

  • Is getting a sim or a pocket WiFi better?

Pocket wifis seem better on paper better but I have no practical experience with them.

    • I went to japan this year, from my experience you can't get voice/sms easily/cheaply. A much better option is a data only sim card. I paid about $40aud for a prepaid sim card from a vending machine in the airport. 15 days with 120mb/day and then my mates and I just used Google hangouts for calls and messages, well all had unlocked Google Pixels. I can't remember the company but had 4g coverage everywhere, much better than the USA.

If you are going in a group and don't plan on splitting up, just get a pocket wifi

Did you find 120mb/day sufficient? I'm seeing Sims that are offering data in terms of gb per day.

120mb/day was fine, as long as you didn't look at lot of photos (like on Google maps). But purely for data calls, Messaging, navigation 120mb was plenty. Also there was wifi in a lot of places, so we just connected to those, it for when wifi wasn't available (like in the middle of a park).

We travelled on a tight budget, If I was to do in next time, I would get something that is more like 3-5gb (total) As some days we used like 10mb/day but it didnt transfer to the next day, so 110mb was wasted.

(We didn't use snapchat, or instagram or facebook on the go, only when on wifi)

edit: we had 120mb/day per person. We would have gone over if we had shared.

          • @Ziogref: Thanks again for the extensive write up. It's good to get the perspective of someone who has experienced it themselves.

It looks like a sim might be the way to go.
