Thoughts on Kogan Atlas Go 13.3"

So I popped on Kogan today to see if there were any good deals on laptops, and saw this. I believe Kogan is trying to compete with the Surface Go. I'm considering purchasing one myself but I am unsure how good it will be quality wise. What do you guys think of this? Might be good for people on a budget for uni/tafe?

  • Quality will likely be adequate, but the processor is a bit slow.
Touch interfaces with lag because of slow CPU are unpleasant to use.

I actually use a laptop with a N4200 and it performs quite well including no touchscreen lag. Decked out with dual M.2 SATA SSDs and 4GB of RAM. These Celeron/Pentiums have been optimised to run well on Windows assuming you're doing the basics like web browsing and office.

In the China space the Teclast F5 and Chuwi Lapbook SE are good contenders (expensive at Ali though) with the N4100 series CPU and proper SSDs.

The big red flag however is the storage in the Atlas Go. 32GB !!! That's seriously too low to be able to do well… anything. Ontop of that it's going to be eMMC storage (used in phones) which is very slow and Windows Update will chew up most of the space. However it does appear to take an M.2 2242 SSD up to 480GB. The problem with that is the 2242 sized SSDs are uncommon and you'd have to settle for a Chinese brand like Kingspec.

Considering the extra to buy the SSD, installing Windows on the SSD, capability of the CPU, 4-6 hours of battery life and an extra $69 for a keyboard, this probably isn't the best option out there. But it's cheap and will do the basics.

    • I remember reading that one of Kogan's previous budget laptops was actually just a rebadged Jumper or Teclast machine. One of their better models was a rebadged Clevo

Reviews on the previous gen 2-in-1 tablet were a pretty mixed bag

      • That's not surprising at all considering they all normally use an OEM/ODM like Tomstar who offer customisations at additional cost.

I just think Kogan go for the cheapest they can find and jump from one manufacturer to another resulting in hits and misses.

  • Just don't.

Its Kogan, its going to be hit and miss if its good or not. Wait for the reviews or roll the dice and see ;)

  • The Surface Go is a 10" device that weighs 0.52kg (without keyboard) so not really in the same category as the 13", 1kg (without keyboard) Kogan Atlas.

The Kogan has a lower resolution screen, even though it's much larger - expect to really see the individual pixels.

Reviews of the Surface Go mention the low battery life. The Kogan Atlas has a simmilar sized battery, so I expect the battery life to be lower because of the larger screen.

In my limited experience of Kogan branded products, they are cheaper because they use cheaper, lower quality components. If you are in any way tech savvy, you will be disappointed.

  • I'd avoid it to be honest… though I'd avoid the cheap realm in general, so what do I know
