Getting a new battery for my Honda Jazz 2005. What to get?

Hi,

Before I start I want to preface this by saying I only recently bought my first car so am not experienced at all in automotive stuff, but I'm learning…

Today my car refused to start, after doing my research it turns out the battery is dead. I don't have booster cables or a jump starter. So I'm taking the car battery to SuperCheap Auto to get the battery tested and charged tomorrow morning (they test and charge batteries for free!). Fearing the worst, I'll need to purchase a new car battery, I've never done this before but I'd like advice on what car battery to purchase. The battery in my car currently is http://www.supercharge.com.au/supercharge-silver-plus-smfns4…

I think SCA will try and sell me https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/century-car-battery---ns… but again, I'm new to this and I'd love advice for what battery to get.

EDIT:
Update: I took it to SCA this morning. Battery was 11.9V , CCA was 60 (it is rated for 330). After a day of charging at SCA it's now at 310 CCA. ( They didn't tell me the volatage). I took the battery home and installed it. Car started up, radio didn't require a code. I measured battery voltage via OBD2 bluetooth adapter and it was 14.4 volts after the car started up. I ran a check for any codes stored in ECU, there was none. I ran a vehicle code test (Torque app) and no codes showed up. I'm guessing it's all good. I should drive the car to SCA to get the the alternator checked. SCA have "Battery Condition Report, Start & Charge Report" check.

if your battery is ~5 years old then you probably need a NS40ZL battery.

    start ringing around.

    check gumtree.facebook market place

you could check wreckers. for a second hand battery

    ebay has them cheapish.

How do ypu know it is 5 years old? It is a 2005 car.

SCA can install it for you for $10 extra?

      • SCA install batteries for $15 extra. I can do it myself, quite easy to fit a car. Only issue is I don't have any of the contact protector liquid, I'm not sure if I really need it or not.

        magic

        • Yes, my battery was manufactured in May 2013. It is 5.5 years old roughly.

Find out why the battery went dead first. The SCA check will help determine if alternator is faulty and not charging the battery. If its the alternator a new battery will die quickly. Hopefully just old battery.

If the alternator is fine then I buy the best battery I can get. I lean towards the Australian made Century batteries as they last but they're pricey.

    • I will be bringing in the battery only tomorrow as I can't start the car to get it to the SCA shop. Would the cars ECU give off codes if the alternator isn't working? I have a device that can transmit ECU codes via bluetooth (OBD2 connecter) that I can get checked out. However I checked the car for any faults maybe 3 weeks ago and I didn't notice anything wrong.

If you have an OBD2 code reader then you can check for faults. The alternator not working may generate a code, but not always especially for a 2005 year car with less sophisticated electronics.

See what SCA says about the battery condition first. If the battery has a major fault then it probably isn't the alternator. See if you can find the date code on the battery too, >5 years the battery may simply be too old.

Guide on reading battery date codes

ive had a decent run with supercharge batteries - lasted on average 5-8 years.

  • Try the Red Exide battries (Extreme model). I've just changed three battries this year for 3 vehicles, using these. Lots of starting power and is maintenance free. Available from many distributors, but these guys were cheap:

You need to call them for your size & price. Changing/ installing was included although I did my own for 2 vehicles.
