Price of LG OLED Televisions

Specifically the C8 77 inch.

Does anyone know the reasoning behind the pricing of this TV? I know they’re different technologies, but the Samsung QLED 75” is drastically cheaper. The LG C8 77 inch hardly (if ever) goes on sale and it’s sometimes even hard to find full price!

I’m looking at the 65 inch C8 anyway, but if the 77 ever became reasonable I’d snatch it up.

That's because Samsung's QLED is what you said - a different technology, and a cheaper one to produce too (at least for now). Samsung's QLED is essentially a VA panel with their proprietary Quantum Dot Technology (QDT).

The fact that QLED uses VA Panel + QDT, makes them cheaper to produce compeared to LG's OLED Panel.

So you're basically comparing a LED (albeit enhanced) panel with OLED.

Nearly correct, but just wanted to say it's LCD (not LED) technology vs OLED technology. OLED is actually individual tiny LED's that are self emitting, where as LCD have a crystal matrix that filters the amount of light from the backlight (either by big LEDS in the edge, big LEDS behind the panel or cathode tubes). On a LCD this results in no absolute blacks, clouding (dirty screen effect), haloing if using full array leds and backlight leakage. You don't get those problems on OLED. The advantage LCD has (for the moment) is it can get brighter than OLED, so its good for bright rooms and its good for HDR. Also LG controls the OLED market at the moment, as they own the patent for the white OLED tech, so as a result, prices are higher. Should change in the next year or two as the chinese manufacturers come online with their own OLED panels.

edit: OLED also has a problem with image retention/image burning so they are not suitable at all for monitors or advertising signage.

Personally I bought LG OLED as I can't stand backlight leakage, dirty screen effect and haloing.

      • I stand corrected! and totally agree with backlight leakage issue

        • Thanks for the clarification!

Any insight into the price differential between the OLED 65 and 77? I’ve seen the 65” around $3800 but the 77” still almost always hovers around $11,000 - $12,000.

Is the cost to manufacture the extra 12 inches really that substantial?

@deeds89: I think it comes down combination of manufacturing yield/efficiency. It get harder to make larger panels without defects. The higher the yield percentage, the less each acceptable unit will cost to make.

  • QLED is what you buy when you forgot which alphabet before LED makes it a good one.

    That's why it's cheap.

  • As others have commented, you're comparing apples and oranges. QLED is not OLED so don't see why you're comparing the two.

I think its fair to compare. Both technologies are used in televisions, they are both in the same size and price space and they are sold side by side in store. Clever marketing can suck/deceive/confuse people coughApplecough.

I am in the process of launching a new tech store where I could arrange prices cheaper than retailers depending on the HW, timing etc as I will be buying from the supplier.
Before anyone brings out pitch forks, this is Australian stock with tax invoice and full warranty.

Since the business is in its infancy, I dont have a price I can offer to the community at this point.

However, let me know how much are you looking to spend and I will enquire.
