Is It Worth Taking Membership in Costco?

Hi all, I have a question regarding Costco Membership Card. We're 3 elders and 1 new born baby, so my question is " Is it worth taking membership in Costco? If it is what are the best items to buy in bulk for a family and baby?"

Any lead will help

Thanks:)

never done it myself. we shop there maybe once a month.

there numerous people on here that grab the membership for a one off purchase like a TV and get a refund on the membership.

        • Oh i was referring to another recent thread, but yes if their policy allows for that then sounds perfectly fine

It's actually worth keeping the membership if you buy TV's or other expensive electronics. Costco will give you essentially unlimited warranty in this case.

          • @npc: The warranty is fixed at three years for tvs etc
Has been the case for over a year now after the us costco introduced limited warranties also.

Nappies and wipes were the big ones for me from Costco when we had a newborn. Also (and still get) paper towel and toilet paper.

Certain things you can't get it anywhere else but most groceries now you can get competitive pricing from other supermarkets. And yes sometimes you just wait till those other supermarkets doing specials but they do them often.

We spend more money in a month if we have Costco membership due to buying other things.

One thing we love to do though is to go to their food court, cheap food and no need membership.

    • You'd still need membership to get past the door people…then onto the food.

  • There is a bit of a trap with Costco. If you don't know your daily special prices theres possibly no saving. Get it just for the fuel and it will cover the cost of membership. As the sizes are larger you have to be sure you are going to use it for fresh food. Good for electronic specials. You need room to store any bulky items - toilet paper etc. Only when they are trying to get rid of stock to maximise your purchase dollar. Look out for .97 prices. Run out.

    Some clothes cheap.

But Woolworths or BigW still have good prices on things if you look out for sales.

Food cheap. Not all that great. I make a trip of it. Fuel first, Milk, eggs, Marinated Rack, big bag of potato chips. Hotdog and drink.

You can get 2 cards with membership so if you partner needs fuel they can go as well, so you don't have to worry about sharing card. Not transferrable as Photo ID on card for shopping. Ok for fuel.

Also note that business membership is $5 cheaper per year, if you have an ABN

  • Is it worth taking membership in Costco?

Thats really up to you. Go mid week and get a 'guest' pass, that allows you to look around and see if its worth it. You can't buy from costco with a guest pass, but allows you in (but you can buy from the food outlet past the checkouts).

    Or

Pay the $60 and see what you think, you can get a refund no questions asked on the membership fee.

The other big one is if you have a costco fuel close by. As the savings on fuel are worth it alone if you live close to a costco fuel outlet.

  • Distance would be an issue. How far are you from the store?

If I was closer I would at least sign up for a trial to see if it's good.

  • The savings on petrol alone is worth the membership.

    • I agree, but a vehicle I owned developed an engine issue. When I took it to the dealership for repeated attempts to fix the issue (low rev engine ping) I was asked what fuel I used, when I responded Costco 91 the entire workshop started heckling me, claiming it was high in sulphur rubbish petrol etc etc - Do any Ozbargainers have an opinion on this - were these guys correct or was this just BS?

    • @qwerty So Fairdinks are resellers. Interesting business model. Even the pictures are from Costco.
