HELP - Outlander PHEV Cable. Where to Buy a Decent One?

Hi all

Just finalising an Outlander 2014 Phev purchase from automotive auctions. It doesn't have / someone stole the charge cable.

Any ideas the best place to buy one?

I assume a genuine mitsi will be $$$$$

Where have you check so far?

  • +1

    Congratulation for your purchase!

Mitsubishi Australia (through your Mitsubishi dealer) does sell this however, you should have 2 sets of Cables

One for 10amp charger (with different plug) and one for 8am charger (with normal plug).

If you can find one of these two, you can still charge the car. Just try to find it first. Cable is normally located in the trunk under the floor flap where normally spare wheels are.

Otherwise, try visiting any of the dealer and see if they have a spare one that they can sell for cheap as they have heaps (from the MY14 version leftovers since now is a new version).

    • Good idea.

    • Any suggested dealers in Vic or SA? Will be picking up from Vic.

I just rang SA Mitsi - $1050 for the cable!!

      • -1

        Yea, that would be Original.

Check any dealer if they have a spare one and if they are willing to offload it for you for cheap.

        • +1

Spare?!… Offload it for cheap?! You do realise they have so many of them they're trying to sell them to get rid of them, Right?!

  • I believe you're looking for a CHARGER not just a cable as such.

    • EVSE as they are officially known as.

There should be 2 EVSEs for each PHEV you purchase. Most people didn't realize the second one and so I am betting OP may get lucky and find it under the flap.

      • Much appreciated re EVSE. I had no idea what to even search for.

I have asked the auction house to check the boot. They said no cables/ charger under the boot floor :(

        • Huh? So the car is not in your possession?

In the early days, there was a huge confusion of what purchasers get for PHEV.

Some customers only received one (8amp) and some did get both. That should be stated in the manual or tax invoice from the original purchaser.

My point is if it can be proven that the car never received the 10amp, then you can claim as such at a local Mitsubishi dealer that you never received one. In other words, you could try visit a dealer and pretend that you were never made aware there were 2 EVSEs and that you only had one and see if you can claim to get another one.

That would be the cheapest way.

The more expensive way (but effective), is to upgrade your power point infrastructure and install a charger. Like this

          https://www.evse.com.au/ev-chargers-for-your-home/

          • @burningrage: No, haven't collected yet. Actually not paid yet. Its around $17 500 for a 110 000ks 2014 Aspire. Negotiated post auction as it didnt reach the reserve.

But if cables are missing worth a $1000+, then i'll pull out.

Nice angle re no 2nd cable provided. But does this mean the charger is integrated into the cable?

            • @tunzafun001: The cable is dead-attached the charger.

In fact, what you called "charger" is in fact an inverter to convert the power from wall into energy to be fed in via the cable.

In other words, the cable (the J1772 connector) is married to the "charger" or the EVSE as they call it.

              So yes.

When you buy that car at that KMs, please invest yourself in an OBD wifi (at least) and hook it to the car to see what is the remaining electricity capacity of the car (that is, the remaining Percentage of Manufacturer's Capacity). It is very likely the car's battery will be at 70% capacity which means maximum theoritical EV range would be 36kms but in real life, would be mid 20 kms.

It is an amazing car (saved me $5k per annum in fuel) but you need to be aware of the limitation.

              • @burningrage: J1772 cable is great tip. Thanks.

I read somewhere that by simply scanning the battery, often it gets some 'recovery'. I have an ELM scanner, What app would you recommend?

About 16km to work. There is a charge station nearby. Do you need to bring your own cables to these things? or are they attached / provided?

                • @tunzafun001: When you buy the EVSE, the J1772 cable will be embedded to it.

                  It looks like this https://insideevs.com/op-ed-dont-include-a-evse-with-plug-in…

The ELM scanner looks like my OBD wifi scanner. You also need the EVBATMON apps to be read PHEV (that apps is designed for Mitsi PHEV). EVBATMON is for Wifi, PHEVWatchdog for bluetooth scanner.

About ELM scanner will get some recovery, it may look like that but it isn't. At least not in my experience. What it does though it raises your awareness of the state of the battery as well maybe changing your driving habit as it literally shows energy usage as you hit the pedal to the metal.

Is the charge station called Chargepoint? If so, you don't need the cable. You do need to grab their access card though. If it is delta charger, no you don't need cable as well. If it is however JetCharge (Chargefox) commercial, you may need to bring your own cable. You cannot use BetterPlace charger because BetterPlace is out of business.

                  • @burningrage: Awesome info.

Charger type isn't listed. Says type 2 charger, or Tesla on all the chargers around here.

Might walk up an look for J1772?

But sounds like I would need to buy a type 2 charger any way. Or do I need a J1772 cable charger and adaptor (cant just buy a type 2 for an Outlander straight out)?

                    Cheers

                    • @tunzafun001: www.plugshare.com will give you the details of that charger station you want to charge.

Your plug type is type 1 (J1772).

For home charging to the wall point, you need the EVSE. Ensure you are confident you don't have the cable first. It's quite expensive so ensure you don't have it first.

But if you need to buy, then check with Mitsi dealers for spares first.

Most chargers are using J1772 connector. BetterPlace uses Mennekes (Type 2) but that's very rare. Tesla has its own connector so you can't use that.

          • @burningrage: Just rang a few dealers. They looked up the VIN and said it only came with one charger.
None in SA! maybe 1 in Vic, 1 in QLD!

  • Try https://www.amayama.com/en

I buy Mitsubishi parts from there way cheaper than dealers.

  • Buying the car without seeing it is a huge red flag imo…

Have you done a PPSR check and basic mechanical check?

Before you purchase the car, how much more is it to buy one with the cable?

I wouldn't buy something like that from aliexpress. You're gonna want the genuine one so you get the actual amps it says on the packaging.

    • Yeah normally I would do a little more due diligence. That being said, the inspection reports are quite thorough, but nothing re charging cables etc.

I actually put down a bid to test how the system works..then won it! I have been looking for similar around $5k more, but being an auction car, it needs to be a decent bargain to justify the risk.

      good tip re A.E.

      • You didn't answer the question… Did you get a PPSR check and a mechanical inspection? If not do it now!!!

As someone else mentioned, you need a swipe card to activate the charger. Make sure that is included.

        • PPSR is done by Manheim I recon. No mechanical inspection other than that from Manheim. I will probably sal sacrifice it which comes with warranty (which probably covers nothing). Outlanders are pretty solid from my experience. If it's got to 100k they are normally not lemons. That's my system anyway.

As for this swipe card. Are you saying mitsi supply them with the car? I thought you would get them via the charge company etc?

If it's part of the car and it's not there then I might just pull the deal. Not happy there is no cable already. Thought it was attached like a towbar loom etc.

          • @tunzafun001: Can you go and view the car ?

I’d have thought the cable is handed to you when you buy it but I’m sure you can get a new one.

          • +1

@tunzafun001: The Outlander PHEV will come with the following:

            1. 2 EVSE chargers. One 15amps (effectively 10amps unless you have 15amp power point which you said you do) and one 10amps.
            2. In the manual, you need to ensure you have a small card that tells you WIFI details. The SSID and the password. You will need this as you download the official Mitsubishi PHEV apps where you can do timer charge (take advantage of off peak power tariff) and remote A/C activation as well as checking charging progress and ETA. This is SUPER important. You don't have this, your car would be 50% useless.
            3. Car Key with remote control. The key is slotted into the remote control so it would appear the key is the remote.
            4. If your car is first registered May 2014, then you have 8 months left of warranty. Be sure to watch your car as your window of claiming would be small.
            5. No spare tires. Instead, you should get a tyre inflator.

Now, early this year, Mitsubishi had a recall that will do two things Other than the takata recall
            1. Spark plug replacement as the one comes OEM was found to fail (although the risk of that is small, the recall did ask for replacement)
            2. NEW PASSWORD LENGTH. This is harder to explain but basically someone hacked into Mitsubishi PHEV system because of the WIFI connection and so Mitsubishi released an update that makes the password much longer AND your Mitsubishi Apps must now be a new version (the one that ends with number 1). EDIT: I should make clear if you don't have the WIFI Card, no matter because under this recall service, Mitsubishi will issue you a new WIFI (SSID and Password) detail.

So please ensure you go to your Mitsubishi dealer and query about these recall notices whether works have been done on them.

There is no swipe card for the EVSE charger. The swipe card is if you want to charge using commercial charger such one with Chargepoint. If I were you, I would order for these swipe cards. It will allow you free access to Chargepoint network.

  • Wrecker?

    $1050 for the cable!!

How inconvenient is having to purchase a $1000 power lead just to be able to charge before driving. No wonder why ev aren't selling.

    • The car does come with 2 sets of EVSEs free of charge.

OP said this was bought in an auction so yeah….

  • When you really got that car, let me know and I'll provide some new starter tips.

    • Legend!

      So Mitsi Victoria have a 15A version Part#9482A341 for $750, 10 A version over 1k.

Probably prefer the 15A version anyway, i'll just use the old 15A AC powerpoint to charge it.

      But still…$750 ..sheesh!

      • The 15amp version is in reality 10amp and 10amp is in reality 8amp.

You cannot use 15Amp EVSE as it has a different plug and normally your wall socket will need to be changed to accommodate that plug. What I did was buying a 15Amp portable socket (like the one they use in construction for portable sawing) which then allows me to use 15Amp EVSE but only output 10Amp.

The 10amp version will only output 8Amp if you read the label.

Also note, the MY14 model limits the charge to 3.33Kwh which roughly translates to 15amp at 240v. You will get this speed when charging commercially or upgrading your wall socket to accept 15amp with the 15amp EVSE.

        • Yeah cool. I have a 15A wall socket with the larger earth pin. So $750 it looks like. I'll have a good look around first and see if there are any OEM options with adapters (ie type 2 built in).

So you recon 17500 is decent enough for the 5/14 Aspire?…. well + $750

          • @tunzafun001: Without knowing the condition of the car, I can't tell however, at that km, I know the battery would be circa 70% or below.

At that price, I would say borderline decent but I would attempt to get a new battery.

The thing is for Outlander PHEV, even though at that high km, the car would be much more robust because there are less mechanical elements in that car compared to typical ICE car. For example, the brake wear in PHEV is much longer thanks to Regen braking so less use of disc brakes (instead, it uses engine braking to regenerate power).

So for that reason, even though at that high km and given the price, I would think it's decent. It is possible to replace the battery and if you do that, the car would be almost as good as new… imho.

    • Good one, cheers. The 32 amp charger sounds good, but from above it would seem the 2014 phev will only do 15a max? So a waste of money going for the bigger one. Also wouldn't want to charge fast too often anyway as it would shorten battery life, but would be handy when charging out and about.

      • The picture says 3.3Kwh. That places it the same as Mitsi's EVSE.

  • From memory… There's a 'Normal' charger & a 'Fast' charger on these, good luck finding either as they usually get 'raided' by anyone/everyone during auction/salvage & are generally regarded as 'hot property' due to demand! Recommend trying forums etc.

    • I suspect that this one was stolen from the auction house considering they didn't even know where it was supposed to be. I'll have a look on Gumtree as well, probably buy my own back!

      • +1

The original owner of the PHEV probably left the EVSE in their home garage by mistake (or deliberately, if a company leased vehicle) when taking the PHEV to the auction. The auction house would not know the EVSE is worth $100's.

Sounds like you have had plenty of advice, however just to fill in some gaps -

        1. MY14 PHEV only came with a single 15A plug EVSE, the MY16 came with both a 10A and 15A plug EVSE. Only the MY17 and MY18 Australian PHEV have the high-speed Chademo charger which was standard on Euro PHEV from the start. Chademo on the PHEV is pretty pointless as your chances of wanting to stop and charge for 30mins just to get another 30mins down the highway here in Australia is about …. ZERO.

        2. You can drive a PHEV forever without plugging it in and you get about 7l/100km, however real savings can be had if you charge using offpeak electricity.

        3. You might need to hardwire a J1772 EVSE into your off-peak (hot water) circuit to access cheaper electricity prices. While this is usually not cost effective compared to the included 15A EVSE, the fact that you might be already spending $100's on an EVSE, maybe one hardwired into your off-peak is worthwhile? Also, AGL have a $1/day EV charging electricity plan which is not cost-effective for the limited PHEV range, however it may be a cheap way for you to get an AGL EVSE depending on the upfront installation costs?

        • My PHEV is MY14 and yes although I initially had 15Amp EVSE only, Mitsubishi gave me another one. It should have been 2. I posted an article above about it.

As for charging at home, dont go for AGL deal unless u have a tesla or soon hyundai ioniq. However even that I wouldnt do it. Just go to a shopping centre and charge there. Faster.

MY14 doesnt have Chademo fast charger so not relevant to OP circumstances.

        • Does anyone know how to get BetterPlace RFID card since the company has gone under?

          • @burningrage: I got 2 Better Place RFID with my iMiEV, and I've already sold one as they are no use here in NSW. Do you have a better place charger that still works with the RFID, where is it? I thought they were all shut down now?

            • @affable: Some places in Vic still uses them. St Kilda one example. Melbourne Airport used to have them too but not sure.

Many are replaced with Delta Chargers.

If you have one better off keep it. They are rare commodity lol.

  • Right, so I've decided I need a 15A EVSE with a standard 15A 240v wall plug and J1172 and Mennekes spliced in (with switch etc)

    BUT

If anyone can point me in the right direction, it looks like this doesn't exist. I'm going to need to buy the EVSE and a Mennekes adapter to use local charging stations. Love that a cable with 2 plugs is over $200!

    • I think the AEVA would be the best place to get answers regarding Mennekes adapters.

Your PHEV is a bargain, hopefully the EVSE is the only expense to get you "back to square 1".

You might want to check out the Holden/GM Volt EVSE, which people were buying back in 2014 for the iMiEV (PHEV's "older brother")
      http://forums.aeva.asn.au/viewtopic.php?t=3654

      in 2016 :
      $378.65 incl GST
      City motors Holden
      GM-23487637

Also Gabriel might have some EVSE adapters https://rechargingnsw.com.au/
      Also look at http://evnomics.com.au

  • Does it come with the original 5 or 7 year manufacture warranty?

Did you do a Drive battery test? Replacement batteries can be expensive.

I would have expected the mileage to be around 70,000 KM for 2014 vehicle with average use.

But the price seems be very good for PHEV

  • +1

Where is the auction taking place? thanks

  • +1

when you get the car, check the booklet for the previous owner, maybe you can give them a call and they'll just give it to you?

    • They said "they don't have one"..so it's like that.

  • So I'm looking for a ev charger with an Aussie plug at one end, charger in the middle and type 2 female (I'm guessing) plug at the other end. Then buy a type 2 to type 1 adapter that I can use with the charger (which is now kind of universal), and I can use the adapter at most charge stations around here (all type 2).

Anyone seen a charger with a female type 2 plug?

  • +1
    • Update - Got the PHEV and it's all pretty good.

BUT………….. if you have one, get your rear electric engine / diff mounts checked while still in warranty. It will present itself as a noise while moving off from a standing start. Looking around the net, these are all failing round the 75 000 to 100 000 km mark. They are $375 each (x3), and mine are completely gone.

Also, the rear calipers/ Hand brake and spark plugs have a recall. Get them replaced for free as well (especially at the higher end km, the plugs are very expensive).

Just to put some finality to this post, I ended up going for a 'Sense' branded EV charger.

Price $235 delivered. Available on ebay, but I bought mine from the company direct:

    http://www.lant-technology.com/product/product239.html

Model for ebay / amazon search SEVA16A-240S CEE-16A PLUG 16A/240Vac

It is an adjustable charger in 2 amp increments from 6 to 16A @ 240v.
The cable etc is around 5m long.
Comes with a J1772 connector and your choice of plug at the other end (although I got mine quicker by putting my own Australian plug on it).
