Any Chance Of Being Released From A Poor Virgin Mobile Plan?

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone's had any success or has any ideas.

I signed up for Virgin Mobile about a month before they announced they were closing down - and it was for a 24 month plan. If it were a 'real live' provider they'd likely be updating their plans to meet market expectations and norms like they did in the past. Problem is now that they're no longer then the plan is not going to change in the next 15 months I'm locked in.

$40 per month for 3GB per month data is not competitive nor enough for me now.

Any ideas?

I assume that came with a phone. No sim only contracts last 24 months

…. The phone is $0 per month BECAUSE the plan is $40 per month for 24 months.

I mean, it didn't occur to you that that might be why they combine the two?

My wife is with Virgin, $24 a month for 5gb (Sim only on 12 month plan) and she would have sign up around the same time as you.
I'll ignore the fact she has has an extra 2gb.
That means the phone will end up costing you $384 over the life of the 24 month contract.
The fact they say the phone is $0 is just a marketing ploy, you signed a higher rate plan to get the phone … and locked yourself in for 24 months.
At best, talk to Optus and they MAY be able to do a better deal if you switch over to them as I know they have some good rates going for Virgin customers.

None at all. You signed up for a contract at 3gb per month for 24 months.

Hate to be bearer for bad news.

Absolutely zero obligation on anyone's part to do this.

You signed a contract - the entire point of a contract is that it's a lock-in.

  • was the phone even worth it? what phone was it.

Even if they change their plan inclusion, those that are in "contract" will not benefit from the change. And you signed up knowing that you will get only 3GB/month. Buy more data or ask them if you can upgrade to higher plan.

weren't you contacted by Optus to get on one of their plans?

      That will happen eventually.

Anyway, if it's clear that you're not entitled to change or back out of this plan, this is what I'd try in your position:

    1. Contact Optus to see if they have any offers for you to move over to an Optus Plan since Virgin Mobile has now shut down;
    2. Tell Optus that VM shutting down is affecting what you were planning to do with the plan (upgrade phone half way through, etc - I don't know, make up some credible but vague sounding BS) and so you'd like to terminate or switch over to another plan; and
    3. Cross your fingers and hope for the best because, again, you're not entitled to get out of a signed contract.

It did, although the phone is $0 per month (which is primarily why I signed up).

2 hours, 26mins later you replied with your gem.

          Now who’s the n00b? :D

Plans that includes a phone are usually terrible compared to BYO Plans.

  • Upgrade to a Good Virgin Mobile Plan and they will release you from the Poor Virgin Mobile Plan.

  • once the announcement was made, you would've received a special Optus link with Virgin-only deals to switch over

    • I didn't, and I was with Virgin for 11 years - Prepaid.

    • only for those within contract period of reaching 6 months or so left remaining

Youve got to keep checking your virgin account>my account>my upgrade status or here https://offer.optus.com.au/vmaspecial
There will be a point where they will allow you to transfer over to an Optus plan.
The plans on offer are better than whats on their website for new customers.
For Virgin customers on a 24 month contract including paying off a phone thats usually after about 18 months.

  • You'll be able to switch across to Optus via the https://offer.optus.com.au/vmaspecial URL at 6 months prior to the commencement of your contract (at the earliest) unless Optus decide to pull across the remaining customers earlier than planned.

I'm not sure where your complaints are coming from, though, as you clearly fail to understand how contracts work. Even if Virgin was still around and offering deals that are different to the one you have now, there would be limited scope to change. The only change you could make is if Virgin came out with another $40 plan that has more usage that isn't promotion dependent (e.g if they came out with a $40 plan that has 4GB then you could switch, but a $40 plan that has 3GB plus a 1GB bonus would not give you the 4GB; only the 3GB so switching would be redundant). Any other changes would involve paying more (going to a higher plan) or cancelling altogether (which is still an option to you now).

Given that Optus' cheapest plan is $45/m for 2GB, there would be no Virgin plan offering a base data of more than 3GB for $40/m. It sounds like a standard case of not doing your research properly and locking yourself into a poor deal because it was the "cheapest" that they had. When working in telco, this was one of the most common occurrences, with many customers assuming you were trying to rip them off despite trying to prevent them from making a bad decision.

Having said all that, since your phone was free on the $40 plan, it won't have been a very expensive handset. All Virgin cancellation fees are just the value of the handset itself. So if the handset was worth $720 at the time of signing up, then the cancellation fee is $30 ($720/24) per month remaining on the contract, regardless of whether your monthly cost is $40/m or $120/m; it's all tied to the handset. This information will be on your contract (or online if you log in and have a look), and you could easily choose to port out to a SIM only plan elsewhere, pay the cancellation fee, and keep using the same phone.
