Anybody else experiencing "connectivity difficulties" that mean the value of the points are not showing when you search for flights? Kind of hard to do any searching for flights right now!

    • Finally can see the points that each flight costs, if I don't select the 'points only' option but instead select 'cash or points'. Otherwise I keep getting connectivity error

    • yeah i think the site might be getting overloaded hehehe , ill try again later

    • Same here, continual "connectivity difficulties" messages. I'll check it out again later.

    • Still getting connectivity errors, I have not been able to access the site properly all day. Pretty frustrating experience - Qantas pull your game together!

      • Finally worked for me late last night.

  • Anyone with good tips on findjng normal going rate to see if this has worked out well?

    • -1

      what?

    • Click "Use money, points or both" instead of "Use points - Classic Flight Rewards only". It will show you classic rewards flights with their usual point cost at the moment, at least for me.

Going through Classic Flight Rewards only just gives me an error.

  • +2

Classic flights don't appear to have a discount for me… this is supposed to appear when selecting flights right? Not applied post-booking?

    • I'm not seeing a discount either for me on a domestic flight.

      • from what i see it showed me the discount on the international flight, did you check the dates of travel that they fall in with the nominated timeframe?

        • Melbourne - singapore is still 28000 points each way so no discount has been applied….

  • Same here. Perth-London, return still 110K QFF

Economy? No thank you I'm not spending my hard earned points on Economy redemptions.

    • What’s the process for using points for a class upgrade (e.g pay cash for economy and use points to upgrade to premium economy or business class)

      Thanks :)

      • -1

        Correct

        • I didn't neg you - but if you buy a basement fare, isn't that option not available? I'm not sure.

        • @ifcw: haha, no dramas. I've never done it but pointhacks.com.au should cover the process.

      • I have upgraded an economy classic reward redemption to business class before flying HKG to BNE in May this year, so that works too. Costed me 54k points for the upgrade.

The classic reward redemption was from the last 50% off sale!

What if you just want to get from A to B for the cheapest price possible? You can get ~2 Economy tickets for the same amount of points as 1 Business Class Ticket.

Using points on Economy is not always nonsensical. Examples of when it makes sense:

      • Cash fares are not cheap (monopoly market)
      • Last-minute bookings (think domestic, SYD-MEL sort of flights)
      • Short flights
      • W/J/Y is not even available and you want/need to fly at a specific date/time

Are you telling me you'd actually spend an additional 8000 points on a SYD-MEL for lounge access and priority boarding?

      • Are you telling me you'd actually spend an additional 8000 points on a SYD-MEL for lounge access and priority boarding?

        You get:
        Food+drinks in airport included
Showers (really good for longer trips)
        Better seat on plane
        Better food+drinks on plane
        Increased luggage allowance
Priority boarding / first off plane (business seats are at front)

        Value of points:
That leg gets down to $96 or 8,000 + $36.
The 8,000 points is around $60.
        Currently you could use 6,000 + $36…
Then the 10,000 extra for business is around $100.

        TL;DR:
Would I pay $60 for all the above? Yeah…
Would I pay ~$100? Harder choice, maybe not.

        Edit:
$96.00 is Jetstar, but if you're only worried about getting there and don't care about much else it's comparable…

        • +4

Ok, the list of inclusions you've listed are not wrong. But you then have to consider on an individual basis whether each of these actually have value to you.

Priority boarding - have you ever gotten off a plane from Economy, got to the luggage carousel only to realise you still need to wait another 5 mins for your luggage? This could be 10 mins instead of 5 mins if you get off the plane first.

Food+drinks - you get them in Economy anyway. Yes, Business is "better", but again, we're now getting subjective. Do you value having the metal cutlery, better presentation and/or better food choices?

I was about to go through each one by one, but every single one of "benefits" is subjective. What if you do not need check-in luggage at all? Then the increased allowance is irrelevant, and the issue I mentioned above about waiting for your luggage is also irrelevant.

I've had Business Class domestic flights where I genuinely wanted an Economy Class meal because the Business Class options were not appealing to me, but I'll admit this is not likely to happen.

How did you get to 8000 points being $60 by the way? If you're 8k on Gift Cards, it's ~$45. If you're trying to sell them, it's ~$96. If you can find value on international flights, the values can vary wildly, but could easily be $100+.

If you're of the thinking that points are better used in premium cabins and on long-haul flights, you would effectively be trading the 8k points (worth $100+) for Business Class.

        • +2

@illumination: Yeah I only use points for economy flights. I may not get any luxuries, but I get more flights overall.

        • +1

          @illumination:
No yeah, it is subjective… I was responding to your question by giving my views. The summary is I value the points at ~$60-100 an would pay ~$60-100 for the benefits of business class on such flights.

Personally the international places I fly to are ~$450 each way - not much incentive to use points there when carrier charges are around $200. Could fly business instead with points, but then it's a question of do I want ~10 domestic flights or 1 international? Personally would rather use the points for all domestic needs and just pay the $900 return when I fly international. Long haul class sucks, but I manage it quite well.

        • @illumination:

Your luggages will come out first if you're flying business class.

Although all these benefit (lounge, priority checking/boarding/luggage, extra luggage) doesn't worth paying extra points if you already have Qantas Gold status (through other ozbargain deal). The only difference will be better meal and seat (on A320 yes, not so much on B737)

        • @jerrysfang: hmm I might be missing something here, but do we get lounge access by flying business class ?

        • +2

          @Gooddeal21:

          Yes you do.

If you fly Business class, you have access to Business lounge on departure.

If you have gold status, you have access to Club lounge on departure regardless of travel class

If you have Platinum status, you have access to Business lounge on departure and arrival regardless of travel class

Qantas Business Lounge is the better one. Qantas Club Lounge is the cheap one.

        • @jerrysfang: Also, if there is no business lounge in your airport, or if you just want to go to the club (eg business lounge crowded), you can go to the Qantas club on a business ticket. In Melbourne the business lounge is actually inside the Qantas club.

        • @josho9:

Yes it was at the very end of Qantas club, and it was pretty small when I visited last time. I heard it was due to renovation. However the new renovated business lounge opened last month. I wonder what it is like now.

Also there's absolutely no need to upgrade to business if you just wanna to use the lounge in Tassie.

        • @dyl:

          Fair enough!

          @jerrysfang:

Your luggages will come out first if you're flying business class.

Yes they do, but I was using an example if where you're jumping off a domestic flight in Economy Class (i.e. you alight after Business passengers), go down to the luggage carousel, and wait 5 minutes for the first bags to start coming out. If you had gotten off the plane first, you would be waiting 10 mins (ok, fine - let's be more realistic and say 7 minutes) instead of 5 - because you got off the plane first.

Once the first bags start appearing 5 mins later, they will indeed be the Business ones.

I guess in this case it balances out, because Economy bags will come out later.. in which case you end up waiting 7 mins+ anyway.

          Ok - moot point.

        • @illumination:

Personally haven't really seen my luggage coming out earlier on business, seems as per usual… Maybe just unlucky lol

  • No issues in connectivity for me. Not sure how much a discount you get though as MEL-LHR return for next year July to August 2019 was 120,000 points for the standard QF9 type flights (ie no strange stopovers except for the mandatory Perth one).

FYI the normal price for economy MEL-LHR-MEL should have been 120,000 points.

  • +4

good timing, was booking some flights today. got 2x$160 flights for 12,000 points+$75.

not the easiest to spend these points effectively, so appreciate the opportunity. the ~$700 business class flights were 16k points+$money instead of 6k points for economy, but 1hr20m flight is waste of business class!

  • Do Virgin usually match these redemption deals?

    • no, I think they just run a velocity promotion at another stage during the year.

      • 30% of few months ago.

  • +1

I can't seem to see any discounted rate anymore? managed to see one on the app before, but now they have all gone.

I was getting 16,000 points to singapore.. now it's back to 22,500

  • Just checked around and couldn't find any discount, only normal point rate :(

  • +1

"connectivity issues" error coming up when searching via classic flight rewards only. searching via "Use money, points or both" shows full points cost, no 25% discount.

  • Where does it show that the 25% has been applied? I picked a flight showing 90,000 points at booking screen between the valid dates, but it doesn't show 25% applied.

    • If it works, it will show the total price, the discount and the remaining points (down the bottom where you currently see 90,000).

      • Nope still don't see it, tried with other dates and nothing different…

Here's what i can only see:

Flight on the 13th May 2019

        Trip Price for - 1 x Adult: 90,000
        Total Trip Price: 90,000
        Points required 90,000
Points balance after this booking 2,667
        Card Payment * $649.78 (AUD)

        *All flights were emirates

  • I think there is an issue with the selection of economy reward options. when i select business, it continues fine, but obviously no 25% discount for biz

  • So are there any discounts for Jetstar domestic Rewards flights?

    • "on eligible flights worldwide operated by Qantas, JETSTAR, and Emirates with a 'QF', 'JQ' or 'EK' flight number."

  • how would you know if they are already discounted 25%?

I am looking at Melb-Tokyo and i getting 63800 points cheapest. Is that already included?

    • Try to book for dates outside the promotion and then you can compare

    • The tax included on the flight will make this option not a cost effective option. You can easily find flights in the 700-900 range with the top airlines when they go on sale. Consider using the points on business class flights or even better RTW business class or first class.

      • Yes JAL was $700 last week Mel-Tokyo

2-4-2 787 Dreamliner also. Very comfortable

      • +2

Generally true but not always. The main benefit of classic rewards is that they are the same price all times of year, no matter when you book. So you can book a flight in December the day before provided there are actually rewards availability (which often isn't the case but you may get lucky). In which case the saving, even including tax, is very good compared to peak period rates on the good airlines.

Compared to sales which are usually either very far in advance, or in off-peak periods (or both).

  • +3

im chatting online with a qantas agent and they are telling me the promo has been pulled due to the issues being encountered online…

    • is there an eta when the website issues will be fixed? EDIT: was able to book as per instructions above (click "Use Money or Points" rather than the classic rewards box)

      • tried that. no 25% points discount via that method.

  • Is it possible to book a Rewards flight in someone else's name? I tried to book a Mel>Bne flight and couldn't find where to change the name, so just exited the page. Now when I log in, the flight is showing as booked in MY name :(. I never authorised the booking! Current wait time for the call centre is over 1 hour!!! Typical Qantas!

    • Or just message them on facebook messenger….

Also unless you press confirm then it's not going to book it. Especially after you have entered your credit card details, it's really quite a simple booking process.

      • Thanks, have done this. Definitely showing I have the booked flight. I never pressed confirm, never entered payment details, never selected points and pay… definitely some website problems happening :(

        • Then if you never entered payment details, don't stress about it, i wouldn't even bother chatting to them. Would just be a temporary hold on the flight then. You'll probably get an email saying something along the lines of 'we saw you were looking at X flight, would you like to complete the booking?'.

    • You can definitely do this, you just needed to change the details at the "Passenger info" section. It will ask what your relation to the passenger is, as the person logged into the QFF account using points.

I've just done this myself for international at least.

  • I can never find reasonable flights to use points on, I find amex better to book with points

  • Last time I did this I found there were wayyyy cheaper seats under “Classic Flights” than when I went “Use Money or Points”, for the same dates, not necessarily same flight. Not sure why. Can’t check this time because it’s not working for me atm.

    • Classic Rewards Flight = loyalty reward. It has fixed points to flight zone. No points or status credit earned
Point plus Pay = exchange points for money. it has fixed exchange rate to dollar of the actual fare. it has the same rule as you pay money to buy the ticket, i.e. earn status points.

  • +5

I'd also like to add a tip that if you also happen to see a promotion for a ASA (Any Seat Award - which has morphed into Points Plus Pay as doing a real ASA is now too painful) flight where the cost of the flight in points is only a little bit above the Classic Award rate then I would definitely recommend going with the ASA flight.

EG. Last year I booked a MEL-LRH-MEL flight which would normally cost me 120,000 points + tax of $660 (which will give me zero bonus points or Status Credits)

The Points Plus Pay flight cost me 142,000 points (plus $667 in taxes) but because it was a Points Plus Pay sort of flight (and I was a GOLD QFF member), I ended up getting 21,700 bonus points to offset the additional 22,000 I paid as well as the usual SC I needed to me retain my Gold. Additionally, this sort of ticket is treated as if you actually paid CASH for your flight and so there is always the possibility to upgrades where if it was pure Classic Awards (Points), you have no perks.

This option is really useful if you have reasonable status (Gold or higher preferred) and are looking to chase more SC.

In cases like this where only Classic Awards are being discounted, then I'd just go with the discounted Classic Awards option. I just hope that they stuff it up and also include the Points plus Pay flights with the 25% discount. :-)

    • good tip

  • Hi,

i have never booked a flight with points at all

currently looking to go Singapore 56,000 each way 224,000 in total.
    + 3 kids 9mnths, 2 and 5

booking is showing as 224,000points i cannot see that its taking 25% off? or does it come up at a certain point?

because if its 25% off it should be 168,000 points..

may need to ring Qantas and clarify..

if anyone can lend a qantas noobie a helping hand Cheers
    DrMilan

    • have you tried ticking the 'rewards flights' option when searching?

    • maybe it's because not eligible flights : Qantas, Jetstar, and Emirates with a 'QF', 'JQ' or 'EK' flight number.*

    • Sounds like very deceptive website

    • Don't select "Use money, points or both".
Select "Use points - Classic Flight Rewards only"

So I managed to get live chat to put my booking through for me and apply the 25% discount.

    • where is live chat located? I don't see any popups and made sure any plugins and extensions were disabled and neutral.

      • Had to click through a few screens before the tab appeared on the left of screen

    • I did this too. They said the promo wasn’t working online, only through them and only on Classic Rewards Flights. A red live chat tab pops up on the left of the page when it’s available.

  • Also in case you are looking to get some Premium or Business class flights on the cheap, the Europe Early Bird Sales Released for 2019 deals were released the other day.

    Qantas: 4 October 2018 for 23 April – 6 June 2019
    Singapore Airlines: 30 October 2018 for 14 January – 3 September 2019
    Etihad Airways: 12 October 2018 for 15 January – 12 August 2019
    Emirates: 4 October 2018 for 23 April – 6 June 2019

    Thai Airways: 24 September 2018 for 16 January – 31 May 2019

    • MEL-BNE Qantas Original 12000 points. After 25% off 9000 points
MEL-BNE Jetstar Original 9600 points. After 25% off 7200 points

    • that's pretty normal it's often only 11 months ahead

    I can't believe I booked a flight yesterday and used 42000 points

    • I am in the same position! Can we ask Qantas to honour the promotions?? :(

Used 40,000 over the weekend myself. FML

      • same 4 tickets to Mel 48 000 points :( (one way)

      • Both legs of my flight are before the 14th October, so I'm not eligible. I hope they will honour the promotion for you.

  • Anyone know if this applies to the RTW flights on points too?

    • As long as you only fly exclusively on Qantas Jetstar and Emirates.

  • +4

One thing people always overlook when comparing reward to a sales fare is the cancellation policy. $225 to change a sale fare on international flights versus 5k points on a reward flight (about $50).

Cancellation is only 6.5k versus non cancellable on a reward flight. For business class is even higher.

A reward flight is half way between a saver and flex fare once you factor in changes and cancellations terms, so it's not always justified to compare to a sale fare.

  • ERROR : please check those fields

    Dodgy!!!

This is the reason they give you 5 days to keep trying for a successful connectivity.

  • How can I get the flights to be just points only (so I can pay the taxes etc with points too?)

Trying to book some melb -> bne flights.

  • +1

I tried to book a QF Classic Rewards fight within the 25% discount period.

However, the QFF points price was the old points price.

    WORKING!
    Just booked ticket before Easter.

Points discount applies when it shows you taxes.

  • Doesn't work :(
Getting 41,400 points for economy return flight SYD - Gold Coast in the second half of October. Crazy!

    • Finally Classic rewards began to work.

      • i still don't see the discount being applied.

        • I just tried and had to select the flights, then move to the "Check" tab (as in Select/Check/Book/Pay page flow).

The Select page showed 36,000 points, then the Check page shows 27,000 points. So I think it's working.

        • +1

@thisisscotts: Yes, I agree, that was my experience late last night too. Finally was able to book!

  • Nothing here folk's

  • Help! I only have 1,180 points I need to book qantas syd to phuket 15/10 return 05/11/18 so Im within travel dates. How do I get 25% off? Does QFF accept velocity points? Any tips I want to pay with amex as my platinum card gives free travel insurance.

    • +2

Of course QFF does not accept velocity points, that's like asking if Woolies accepts FlyBuys Dollars, or Coles accepts a Woolies $10 off your shopping. Not gonna happen. You can trade your Velocity points for Qantas points, maybe, at 1:1 in the forums.

You need to have enough points to buy the flight with points, which you don't.

Did not check your dates, but on 20/Feb/2019, you need to pay 24,000 points + taxes for Sydney to Phuket one way on Jetstar. After the 25% point discount that becomes 18,000 points, but the taxes are not reduced, and they are $183.48.

      To convert that into dollars at the going rate of 1.2 cents/point, it's = 18000 * 0.012 + 183.48 = $399.48

I then checked WebJet, and it's $231 for the same flight (without luggage), just buying it normally.

So in this case, I would just be buying the flights using a credit card, because it is much better value.

Jetstar do accept Amex, with a surcharge: https://www.jetstar.com/au/en/help/articles/fees-and-charges
So it's $231 + 0.93% surcharge ($2.14) on that date and you'd get travel insurance through your Amex.

Checking the dates you want + the return trip is left as a homework exercise to the reader :-)

    • I'm afraid you'll need quite a lot more points to make it worthwhile, points can be earned in many ways, but better not go chasing them else you end up spending just to get them. Good luck mate!
