Heading to Melbourne for 5 days in Oct.
Looking for the best way from airport to the city, ie, something like the Sydney airport hack confirmed working.
What's the cheapest way to the city/rtn for a solo traveler.
Thanks in advance

This - bus to Broadmeadows station and train to Southern Cross.
OP asked for cheapest, which this is not.
Cheapest method involves carrying headphone gifts for an anonymous Hong Kong businessman.
This has been posted a hundred times if you did a search.
Cheapest:
901 bus to broadmeadows.
train to CBD.
Will take you a looooong time.
Easiest:
Uber from T4 carpark.
I did. Searching under Melbourne airport bought up all car parking deals.
That's odd. I mean you don't even need basic boolean search operators and query modifiers for this question. It's not rocket surgery.
I searched your topic title and get all the relevant threads.

The 401 bus stops about 4min walk from my house in the E burbs.
I am determined to do it one day, but it does take 2.5 hours…
It's only a 4 hour walk
Just carry a sign with….
"single traveller wanting to share a taxi ride to city"
Look for three others wearing the same sign.
Pay 25% of taxi fare to city.
Good for the environment, efficient and you get to meet some new people.
Cheapest way ? Walk :)
Having evaluated all the options unfortunately the best price/time ratio is still the Skybus.
Thankyou. Appreciate the calculation
If you wait 10 years, the supposed new train line that every government has promised?

Who says it will be cheaper? They'll probably implement the scurrilous "platform access fee" on top of the normal fare, like Sydney and Brisbane have done.
I got a government survey phone call prior to the announcement and many of the questions related to just how slow they could go and how much to charge. Fair enough, except some questions were if it's slower and cost more than your current method, would you still use the train? It's really weird to spend a pack of money when all they are aiming to do is match the bus for speed and price. Why bother. I asked if there was at least check in like Hong Kong and they had NFI.
Skybus = $20 each way (reduced return rate), 30-50 mins (time of day, traffic, etc, noting road incidents could make this higher). To Southern Cross only. You will have to take a free tram or free skybus shuttle to your end destination if it’s jot near SC.
Local bus and train = $4.20, 50-65 mins (time of day, frequency of services), can get off at any of the 5 stations in the cbd.
As a local, I prefer the cheaper option, every time.
Arrive early in the morning, so I think I'll go the train/bus combo into the city. My flight out, I'll take the Skybus to ensure I get to the airport in time.
Thanks
For one person, probably Skybus.
There is this though
