Best budget kitchen knife?

I've been using my blunt knife for too long!
Can anyone reccomend an all rounder knife mainly for slicing meat & potatoes

Im not to bothered about a knife block as the other knives get used rarely.

I guess im looking to soend around $20 but not too fussed if over or under slightly.

Thanks

    buy a sharpener?

    • And learn how to use it! (Not sure what your knife is but make sure you're using the right to sharpen it. It's different for European and Asian blades.)

Victorinox, and a decent knife sharpener.
No clue what is the best sharpener

Bought this Furi ages ago and seemed to be recommended at the time

    • hey, I've got that sharpener.

      works fine.

      • cool!
It worked nicely with the generic knives I use.
scored one Wusthof filleting knife that was on clearance for $40
not sure if the Furi will be suitable for this one too

  • Apparently the Cook & Dine ones in Coles are good bang for your buck at the cheap end of the scale.

If you can stretch to $50, a Victorinox chef's knife performs like something twice the price:

    • I bought one of these for my girlfriend. It's great.

  • I use a heap of the Scanpan spectrums. Easy sharpener. Cheap and work well for what they are.

I find the kiwi knives in the asian store good lol. One normal chef's knife, a cleaver and a sharpening stone.

I was ready to splurge on one of those Global Knife deals that pops up regularly on OzB. However, someone mentioned Kiwi knives in one of the threads and I bought them while on holiday in Thailand. Set of 5 knives for $20 but I have seen them at Asian shops in Australia for $5-6 each.

They are very sharp and I have no issues slicing meat, carrots, potatoes etc. Global knife block sets are $250-300 and I could get 50-60 Kiwi knives that will last me a lifetime. I haven't sharpened our Kiwi knives for over a year and use them daily.

      • considering you can treat them badly is an added bonus.

Kiwi and a sharpener / close thread.

While I understand you are asking for suggestions on cheap decent knives, I can't stress enough how much more enjoyable cooking is with a really good chef's knife. If you can afford to splurge ~$150 for a Wusthof or similar, it really is worth the money. Wusthof also have a really good free sharpening service in Australia when you need a new edge.

    • I second this. Wusthof service is very good.

Also get a honing steel to get nicks out every now and then.

If you eat uncut bread loaves such as sourdough, consider getting a bread knife. If the price starts adding up, consider getting a set, but only if you need to. We got an 8 piece set around 5 years ago for $300.

    • Wustoffs are reduced on ebay right now to $59 for a 17cm its about the same price as the other brand mentioned
Is this what one you mean?

  • Bought this from Zapals for $1.30 postage only https://www.ebay.com/itm/Portable-Mini-Knife-Sharpener-Tool-…

Amazed how good it is I do have the Furi knife sharpener as well and this is just as good for what I need.
2 knives to buy would be an 8CM and a 15-20CM Between my Furi Victorinox Zanger Icel and cheap woolworths knives they all cut the same when they're sharp
