Cheap phone for grandma

Hi,

I want to get a cheap phone with a cheap sim card for my grandmother. She won't make any calls, she just needs to have a number that we can call her on. I have an old Motorola V3 that would be good, but it is not 3G so i'm not sure if i can get a sim card for it.

So, any ideas?

Thanks

  • I thought if u get a 3G sim card and put it into a 2G phone it'll still work on 2G (just as long as it's not 3 as i think they're purely a 3G network)

    • Correct.. Any SIM except a 3 SIM will definitely work on 2G. The SIM just identifies the phone to the network. There's no such thing as a 2G or 3G SIM..
(I suspect even a 3 SIM will work as they can/do roam onto the 2G network of Telstra when out of 3G range)

Optus and Vodafone sell $2 SIM cards at Supermarkets and Phone shops. Or you could sign up to one of the "ISP" phone providers like TPG, Exetel, Amaysim, etc.

  • $38 - http://www.dealextreme.com/p/a55-1-8-lcd-screen-dualband-gsm…

Nice and simple with big buttons, works with my 3G sim card on 2G networks ;)

    • -3

which comes in handy when it gets seized at customs.

      • It won't

If you are talking about the a-tick, customs do not care.

        Can't see any other issues.

      • Have bought 15+ phones from DX (to resell and for older relatives who don't need anything flashy) and have never had any issues. A few of them even had the packages opened by customs for random spot checks and the phones came through unscathed.

  • Just get her a Amaysim or LycaMobile sim card with a long prepaid expiry, they work on 2G only phones so no issues with your Moto V3.

  • Thanks guys! At the moment she is gonna use my old V3 with the free lebara sim i got a while back!
