Need Help to Workout What This VIN Number Is?

I need help to decipher the poorly engraved VIN. The person that built the trailer must have had a few beers when engraving the build plate. I need help to decide on the correct VIN. Department of transport don't have a search function that supports wildcards *. It must be the correct set of 17 characters for it to be valid.

I don't know the old registration number when it was registered and the VIN is not stamped on the chassis.

Check out the image and see what you think.

I seem to have figured it out, as it gives a result in the QLD Rego Check:

    Rego Check Results

    Reg No.: CV4857
Description: 2009 HOMEMADE ATM UP TO 1.02T BOX TRAILER
    Status: NOT_REGISTERED

    Os may be 0.

    • Yer they said O are 0's. I need a microscope. They did write HOMEMADE and the A is not rounded.

    • "O" are "zeros". VINs should not have the letter O or the letter I in them. It will always be a 1 (one) or a 0 (zero). That being said, if it is a "home made" trailer, it could have anything.

From the PPSR Website regarding VINs:

Structure of VIN: A VIN can only be made up of the following characters: 0-9, A-Z (uppercase) excluding letters I, O and Q,

  • Take it off and start again, fill out a self-assessment compliance inspection form for new rego.

This was the form i originally filled out: https://www.support.transport.qld.gov.au/qt/formsdat.nsf/forms/QF3970/$file/F3970_CFD.pdf but because the VIN was not showing in there system they couldn't proceed. I will call and see if they can issue a new VIN and whats required. I have all the other info from the build plate just not the correct VIN.

  • Letter punches are soooo much easier than engraving…

Once you figure it out, buy a set and stamp the number into the trailer

    • It's looks more like putting solder on top of the plate rather than engraving.

        Engraved with an electric toothbrush.

  • Do they have licence plates on trailers, can your grab it from that? If not, my guess would be:
    5T9T20RBMgOARBD36

  • 5T9T20RBM90AABD36
    5T9T20RBMG0ARBD36

Neither of these come up with info on a PPSR, which I would think they should

    • Can you just enter them in to see if they come up as valid? What site did you use?

    it says LAUREL, not YANNY

  • Queensland Transport have a Rego Check app you can use to find the VIN number. If the trailer is registered, you could use your licence plate (not 100% sure if this works on trailers, however) to find the VIN.

  • It starts with 6, as all Australian built vins do. I'll do the rest when I get a chance.

    • Interesting. I had 6 originally but after looking at the straight line and the way it finished i decided it was a 5.

Unfortunately i dont know what the old Rego was and either do the original owners. Its been unregistered sitting in a shed for a few years.

      • 6T9T20RBM90ARBD36 was the best I could get. As someone else said, might be easier just to get a new vin.

6 is Australia, 1 is America, k is Korea, j is Japan etc etc. There are never any Os, they are 0s.

  • My interpretation:
    6T9T2ORBM9OARBD36

Like mentioned before the O's could be zero's, and the A's could be weird R's or something.
First digit looks like a 5 but should be a 6

  • Ring the manufacturer they may be able to cross reference the date with the code.
    What size trailer is it?

  • Thanks for everyone's input on this :)
