Considering Renting out My Mitsubishi Lancer

I am going out of country for a few months and was considering renting out my car. Its a 2008 car and 220,000 km on the clock. I don't have any experience renting out before.

I checked drivemycar website and it says the car must be less than 150,000 and for a 10 year old car they are offering $310 a month, which seems pretty low to me. Also they are saying 100-200 km is the per day driving limit. I also checked hyrecar (bad reviews on internet), turo and carnextdoor.

I am aware that there are some risks involved like possibility of scratches, reckless driving, but I was wondering if anyone here has experience renting out their car on any of these sites and how has there experience been?

          Ram raiding?

      To get to the airport.
A cheap way to enter a smash up derby.
Cheap transport for pot smoking backpackers to get to Nimbin.

    • Users are generally like me, family with only one car, the one car is used but need to get somewhere and don’t want to ride coz it’s raining. Use carnextdoor, but unless more people rent out their cars it’s hard, as it’s rinaing and nearest car is two streets away.

More people who lease a unused capital good, the better. Especially if you drive a car, that’s old and don’t mind the arses who may leave your car with rubbish etc so long as you get $$$ for the trouble.

    • When I was in America I rented an epic 10 yr old ‘truck’ (Toyota tacoma 4wd). Was raised with muddies etc, rented it for a few weeks off a college student who was in middle of exams. Was awesome. One of the biggest attractions was low daily cost.

A lancer, not having novelty attractions like this car did, would be attractive only if extremely cheap…at which point I reckon it’s not worth it for the owner to risk having it thrashed by some pelican

    be less than 150,000

    You don't qualify.

      • Didn't think to mention that in your post?

        • I just found out after posting.

        • @sahilchaudhary: I've got 2 ex taxi hybrid Camry's with around 700,000kms on each, how much will they pay?

  • That's quite a few kilometres you've got on your car. So what do those websites offer? What happens to damage to the car? And parking/driving infringements?

100-200km a day is quite a lot. If you maxed out the limit you could drive across the entire width of Australia in under a month!

    • The other websites I believe are based on Airbnb model. I am not sure what they are offering as I need to fill in all details first and then I might be able to see. I was wondering if anyone has experience can share their feedback.

  • What sort of car do you have?

    • Sedan

      • Make? Model?

        I'm guessing a Camry

          @sahilchaudhary:

Ooh awesome car to hoon around in!

Yeah that's coming back with no clutch and low tyre tread on the fronts 😂

          You're ok with that yeah?

        • @Spackbace: Not really :P

          @sahilchaudhary:

So… You got your answer then.

Your car is only worth about $5k. Don't let it get destroyed for the sake of a few hundred dollars.

        • @sahilchaudhary: Most people can't drive manual, which means way less of a market, the ones that would be interested, like Spackbace said, would be because they've always wanted to drive/hoon a Lancer. For the small amount of money you'd make, I don't think it's worth it at all.

would be because they've always wanted to drive/hoon a Lancer

I have never in my life come across a person that wants this. Why would anyone want to do this. Its absurd. The car is just shit. People want to hoon performance cars. No kid ever woke up going, one day Im going to grow up and buy a stock lancer and hoon around in it.

@TheBilly: Where have you been the last 20 years? Certainly not in the car community that's for sure! Also, 80% of the hooning I've ever seen were in shitboxes, and the other 20% in expensive shitboxes!

How does insurance work? Because if something happens, you can bet that your insurance company will take one look and deny any claims.

    • Carnextdoor takes care of insurance

  • Why do you think $310 for a 10 year old car is not much?

How much do you think they could rent it out for? How many days of the month do you think they could rent it out for?

      1. The amount depends on the duration.
      2. The website says the average is 6 days/6 customers a month.

I mean this in the nicest way, but no wants to rent your 10 year old car with over 200k+ kms on the clock.

    You're wasting your time.

Be good for a hoon to rent, thrash the guts out of it, ignore toll road fees and speeding fines, get chased by the Police then hand it back - ripped seats, stuffed motor and gear box plus dents and bald tyres.

Either store it somewhere or just take the car to the wreckers, get maybe $200 for it, and buy another car when you get back to Australia.

    Less hassles.

Or get cheap parts for their own Lancer 😂
