Great price on the Samsung Gear S3.

The Samsung S3 Frontier features a distinctive bezel made from steel that can be used to navigate apps and notifications along with an always-on watch face. It's capable of receiving texts, calls, and other notifications via the Bluetooth connection, and it's compatible with Samsung Pay for easy payments when out and about. There is a built-in GPS, and it's dust, water, and shock resistant.

  • I'm loving mine. They've since released the successor to this model, but I'd still buy this again at this price.

    • Same, highly recommend. It hasn't aged at all despite me having it since just about release day (obviously didn't pay RRP though).
Note - the black band in box only comes in S or L (I got a free red band in Medium though and use that)

    • The Galaxy Watch isn't much of an upgrade from this, is it?

      • Not really, unless you prefer the smaller size. The new one removes MST (only has NFC), is a little bit more waterproof, but has the same processor, storage and RAM.

        • Yeah reviews I've seen say it isn't much of an update. Best feature is having Spotify and offline content available on it. Samsung is the only smart watch that has this feature to date. Otherwise, downloading mp3 songs via YouTube on my mobile and transferring to the watch is easy and wireless. I would say that these sort of smart watches are really only useful for those who use it for exercise and running. Unless you're replying with a "OK", I find it redundant to get a message on my mobile and take out my phone to reply to it anyway as typing on a watch is truly awful.

      • Pros

        • Significantly improved battery life (I can already get 4 days if I want, so no big deal).
        • Two different sizes available.
        • Different colours, I think.

        Cons

        • They removed the MST that the Gear S3 had. I use it regularly when paying at Coles as it works easier for me than NFC. Works anywhere that you can get to the magswiper on the EFTPOS terminal.
        • I bought my Frontier a few weeks ago at a decent price. The new one wasn't worth the wait or the higher price to me.

Does it support MST for all cards or is the support on the banks end? I'm with ANZ but haven't had the opportunity to give MST a shot, only NFC

        • +1

@DeepHorizon: I believe it works with any bank that works within the Samsung Pay app. I haven't used it on my phone either personally, NFC is just so abundant in Australia.

        • Which bank supports mst? I know anz, westpac and common wealth only support nfc with samsungpay

        • @hopper:

Not true. Westpac specifically mentions that they block MST on their cards. NFC works fine though.

      • the battery life is awesome on the new 46mm Galaxy watch.

Could also price match TobyDeals at Officeworks to get it for $303.05 delivered considering the new changes in warranties for price matching.

    • Do they match if there is a coupon involved?

      • I don't think so. Must be advertised price.

    • +2

will be handy to pricematch the new Galaxy watch https://www.tobydealsau.com/en_AU/product/samsung-galaxy-wat… when it's out by october.

    • Will Officeworks price match .com/en_AU/ or only .com.au?

      • I got OW to price beat from eglobal Central a few weeks ago so doesn't require domain ending in com.au.

  • I'm looking to pick one off gumtree or fb marketplace for $200 or so. :) They look awesome though!

  • I really hesitant to get this because I really want the Galaxy watch as well. but This all black looks better. I'm hitting a wall at the moment on which one to get. :(

Main thing I like about the new one is the batteries.

Edit: Damn all gone already :(

Still available at Toby's Deals for $319, see doweyy's comment :)

  • Wouldn't it be best to wait for watches to be released using Qualcomm's new Wear 3100 chip.

    • There's always something better just around the corner. Samsung have JUST released the successor to this watch. As such, it's likely to be at least a year before they integrate that, assuming that they do. And that's unlikely to be this price at release.

      • The new Qualcomm chip has been a LONG time coming. I dont think Samsung will integrate it straight away but I think a Google Pixel watch will be just around the corner.

        • Right. Five years ago I would have expected a Google watch to be nicely affordable (a la Nexus), but the Pixel range seems intent on pricing things like Apple.

If you are interested in using this for any sort of activity tracking (running, cycling etc.) save yourself the headache and get yourself the current Garmin Fenix 5 deal from Rebel: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/403305

  • Just looking at these today actually! Release date is only round the corner for the new watches I believe (Oct 4). Doesn't look like any massive changes though, like someone else mentioned I think I'll grab one of these 2nd hand on Marketplace or Gumtree.

For anyone that has the watch, how is the GPS? Does it sync nicely with MapMyRun?
    What's the battery like?

    Thanks

    • +1

GPS is fine, although "current pace" seems to be quite out for me, the "average pace" is fine. Syncs fine to mapmyrun, you just have to open up the app again once you're next to your mobile to begin syncing. Battery is adequate but not great, but will require a charge daily especially if using GPS on and Bluetooth. My hour runs with Bluetooth speakers connected, music on and GPS on will drain about 40% of the battery. If you are a serious marathon runner, then this isn't going to be for you (but that isn't their target market anyway), but for a casual hobby runner or for exercise, this will do its job.

      • thanks mate.

Could Spotify work on this? Would I still need my phone for music on the run? Yep definitely not a marathon runner!

        • +1

Yup but you need Spotify premium for offline downloads to be able to save on your watch when you're running without the phone. Samsung are the only manufacturer that has this functionality. Just download the Spotify app on the watch and it will sync to your account and play list. Otherwise, your option is to download mp3s via YouTube using a converter online (google it) and just transfer files from your mobile to the watch. I use this to listen to podcasts from YouTube on my runs.

        • @orly: that's awesome I do have spotify premium. That's my mind made up then!

Now it's just between the different versions and if I can justify 500+ for the new bluetooth version

  • So if I correctly understand this version can not make calls by itself with a sim card right ?

    • Correct, can't make/receive calls without a mobile connection.

  • Missed it :(

If these were about $250 i'd purchase it, $350 a bit to much for me though for a smart watch

  • These always go out of stock before I can get my hands on one. They should know to better stock it.

    • Price beat from Officeworks works out cheaper. Follow the thread.

  • Did Officeworks price beat $303…Big Unit…not used to it yet…

  • Back in stock now

    • Expiry removed. Thank you
