By tearing up your credit card and never leaving your suburb, you are clearly not ready for international transactions let alone international travel.

  • The current exchange rate (according to google) is 1 USD = 1.40 AUD,
So buying something for $101 USD comes to about $141.02 AUD

To me it looks right according to the exchange rate, with close to no fees from what I can tell?

How does this happen and how can I avaoid in future?

I think it happens due to inflation, bonds and investment and things, I guess supporting Aussie currency can help avoid it in the future, while hoping for a decrease of the US dollar? I found this site that details better then I know in terms of increasing the value of a currency https://www.economicshelp.org/blog/4819/currency/how-to-incr…

If you ring up and tell them nicely that you didn't know and won't do it again, they will waive it sometimes. It depends on the bank and the card mostly but I think you'll get better success with a Visa anyway. I've done it with both Visa and Mastercard, both due to not knowing that the company is actually an overseas company. Citibank Visa happily waived whereas the Westpac Mastercard said that it is not Westpac charging me the foreign transaction fee, it's actually Mastercard itself and as a result they're unable to waive.

    • I hope you just being /s but it still sounded like full of BS tho. :p

  • Next time buy something from Zimbabwe. Something that cost $260 ZWD will only cost you $1 AUD… bargain!

    • Did you forget the word trillion between 260 and ZWD?

  • You spent $101 USD. This is roughly equivalent to $142 AUD. How did you get ripped off?

OPs education was obviously the rip off

      • The last time I checked children are not educated about money at school in any way whatsoever because of how unimportant it really is.

Ok…. backs away…..nothing to see here

    • No … no.

  • Look on the bright side it probably can't get any worse from here!

  • sounds like a high yield investor to me

    What exactly is the problem?

    US$101 =~AU$141

You weren't ripped off that's the bloody exchange rate.

  • Maybe what he meant was he bought an item thinking it was in AUD101 but was not.

You're lucky because they could have charged you 4.4% International Transaction Fee even though the item is in AUD.

  • Maybe the OP is stuck in a timewarp and still thinks it's 2013 where we were close to USD parity?

    • It's just a jump to the left…….

And then a step to the right

      All together now!

  • +1

Wait til he notices the international transaction fee and the currency exchange fee…

  • Did someone use your credit card without your consent or something?

I'm wondering if you've realised you'll most likely also be charged an International transaction fee & possibly GST!

  • If you can reply with your credit card number with expiry and pin, we can check it further for you.

    • Don't forget the CVV! That's the 3-digit code on the back!

this is a joke, please don't post your CC details…

      • No its not.

Please go on, post your CVV.
