  • Perfect timing. Thank you.

  • I'm ready to throw my Vero 4k in the trash. Will this play anything I throw at it, including different subtitle formats?

    • Yep!

      • Will it play everything out of the box though, or after installing some apps?

        • Not certain, I can't remember what video player (if any) the Shield comes with as stock, but it's stupidly easy to install MrMC or Kodi, have it pick up your media library and then it's play away.

Try not to view having to install apps as a bad thing.

    • I choose between Kodi, SPMC, Plex, VLC, MX Player Pro and Archos from time to time. So far all sub-title formats are handled, just some better than others. MX Player Pro has been problematic though.

    • Maybe not. Throw the Vero4k at it.

  • Anyone have experience with adding tv tuner/s to record free to air tv? Also suggestions on then streaming those recordings to another device in another room?

  • Is it missing any catch up tv apps?

    • +3

You can cast all five, and there are native apps for 7, 10, and ABC, with a janky one for SBS that can be sideloaded:

      https://mega.nz/#F!PaJQELqY!dg3wVzOFIybj6an5Yeq7PA

Word on the street is that official Android TV apps for SBS and 9 are under development, and will be available by end of year / early next year.

      • Thanks. Trying to replace a Telstra tv for my parents, so has to fit the bill. They won't be casting anything unfortunately.

        • I gave my folks a TTV1, mainly for Foxtel Now, but it also has all five catchups (along with Netflix / Stan / YouTube), and a brand new official Plex client - it's a decent little box.

Is local media playback from USB the reason you are wanting to replace the TTV, or…?

        • @kirt: they are leaving Telstra so assume they'll want it back

        • @kulprit:

Ah ok. If they do have to give it back, you could look at buying one on Gumtree - the TTV1 goes for around $40 to $50.

Another alternative would be a Fetch Mini, which has all five catchups plus FTA tuner, Netflix, Stan, YouTube, pay TV, movie and TV store, Optus Sport, an Amazon Prime app in the works etc

  • Hey Guys,
Ive been looking for a new media player that can play 4k files as well as support DTS HD-MA, Dolby True HD from my portable hard drive. Ive got an old Micca EP600 thats been doing a great job but unfortunately it only supports up to 1080p. The NVIDIA Shield seems like it'll solve the problem but quite expensive if i only really use it for playing content from my portable hard drive. Any advice would be great! :)

      Advice: Buy it

    • I got the same question

      • +1

What’s your question? Does it do all of those things? Yes.

    • Be aware if you only want to connect it to a usb drive and not a network.

On first startup it asks for you to connect to a wireless network and you can't bypass this stage and then I think it also asks for your google account and you can't bypass this stage either.

So unlike all the other android boxes I've bought where you can just start it up and run it locally connected to a usb drive without a google account this is not supported on the shield.

      • Thanks for that, certainly something that needs to be considered as i was intending to use it purely to watch 4k movies from a hard drive. I should probably look for cheaper options but cant find anything on the internet that can guide me.

      • But after connecting to wireless network and signing into google, you can play via USB right?

Not interested in streaming as i already have AppleTv 4K. It is mainly to replace my old trusted WDTV.

      • You are better off having it linked to your wireless network, your issues with google aside. Nvidia pushes updates to the device on a regular and timely basis. I would recommend this course as Nvidia do their own thimg and have updates on top of google's Android TV updates for firmware for the Shield YV device and also the remote control and game controller (if you have one).

Even if you don't use Google Play, you can source apks from Aptoid and sideload them using ES File Explorer. I also use Puffin browser to seek out APKs that can also be sideloaded.

As for playback of 4K content, I recommend you use a decent robust USB3.0 (or 3.1) SSD. Preferably, I use a Samsung T5 500gb SSD. If you use a USB3.0 thumb-drive, it will get hammered and have a short life if you use it long term.

Ordered, bit the bullet and bought one…
Created a new account for the ebay plus trial ;)

    • That't the spirit :)

I might do the same. If you cancel before 30 days, you won't get the $20 voucher, right?

      • $20 voucher?! I'm out of the loop apparently..

  • Seems like xbox does the same and more…

    • +1

      Not reaaaally.
You can't cast to it, it doesn't run emulators, you can't game stream from a desktop PC to it (afaik), you can't properly run Kodi (afaik), it doesn't have Google Assistant built in.

      • Isnt game strraming only if you have nvidia graphic card on your pc?

        • Possibly, doesn't make it less true though.

I'm pretty sure there is an app on the Play Store (Moonlight?) to do it without a NVidia GPU

        • @theguyrules:ok..does anyone know a bit more about steam app?
          Cheers..

        • +1

@Jozimozi: Cmon man do some Googling. I told you the name of it, you can look into it now.

        • Native Nvidia game streaming yes. However, you can install the Steamlink app, and run anything from your PC via Steam.

    • Xbox won't play as many formats and struggles with some subtitle files :(

  • Okay, back to basic questions. Will this play 4K video files with Atmos/DTS audio from a hard drive?

  • Just curious can Foxtel streaming service work on this?

I'm guessing you might need to sideload the Foxtel app?

    • Foxtel Now does, yep, you can get the app from the mega link posted earlier in the thread.

    • +1

Foxtel Go does not work naively, however you can now cast from any computer to a Chromecast device, including the Shield.

      • @ atlas
"Foxtel Go does not work naively, however you can now cast from any computer to a Chromecast device, including the Shield."

I can confirm, however on some programmes you have to push it hard. There are times when it behaves badly and not because of Shield and/or Chromecast. Foxtel Go has been a very sloppily written app since day one. Some of the bugs I reported in Beta are still there :(

        • That’s Foxtel for you. Just do enough to say they have an app.

  • Thanks, got one. What's a good low profile USB Drive to go with it?

  • +1

Thanks Kirt and OP. Just in time for my 4K remuxes on PLEX.

  • How often would one of these get around this price? I really want to replace my Chromecast Ultra with this, but I have a holiday coming up that I need to be saving for. Also, do these allow you to cast video files with the google cast icon using android?

    • The Aussie version has never been this cheap AFAIK, but it has been as low as $215 a few times recently.

In my experience casting to the Shield is virtually identical to casting to a ChromeCast.

      • So most video players in my phones web browser and apps with Chromecast support will still show the cast icon on them and allow me to cast to this box?

        • Yeah should be the same.

Is there particular ones you use / need?

        • @kirt: Most often I use Youtube and Local cast, plus just random videos from websites like kissanime and stuff like that.

  • Got Mibox… happy with it so far…(although recent update made it slightly worse).
Anyway, so I will wait for the next gen of Shield. (got no 4K tv yet and don't play game much so i think should wait….)

Can I subscribe to your blog?

      • +1

        which one?

        • All of them please

        • @Jamiea: Got none actually. :)

Seems like the Boxee Box of 2015+

(My Boxee is still going strong!)

    • I miss my boxer box, nothing I’ve had since it has given me such a great user experience. When they stopped supporting boxee I started my journey to find a new box.. hoping the Nvidia Shield will be that replacement!

  • picked one up about a month ago for full RRP unfortunately.
best purchase I've made in years. Awesome wireless bedroom streaming for my MKV collection.

    PLEX all the way.

  • Any MiBox international version on sale at the moment? Whats the lowest price so far? Anyone knows?

    Thanks

  • What other controllers will work with this? Like xbox pc one?

  • If i've already got a PS4 plugged into the TV is it worth getting one of these as well as?

    • +1

It really depends on the individual needs.

I have both the Xbox One S and PS4 Pro. But I just picked this up as it supports almost everything needed to Direct Play from PLEX instead of transcoding which kills HDR and washes out colours. I'll be able to Direct Play 4K remuxes with HDR.

If you don't know what I'm talking about then you have no reason to want this.

  • I'm currently running am Intel NUC with Kodi and a NAS to access media (mainly movies/tv) on my 4K TV and other devices via wi-fi without problems.
Can anyone tell me what a NVIDIA Shield can do that I can't at the moment?

  • My Xbone 4k doesn't work on my old 4k tv. Will this player work/support older 2014-2015 4k tvs ?
Anyone with older 4k tvs experienced this issue?

  • If you want a better remote and a cheaper device for your family "that dont play games" then a Vodaphone Tv box is a better device for them, its unlocked like this too

  • answered*

  • Awesome unit, and somewhat similar price to when I bought of off Amazon a couple of years ago.

A recent update had put mine into an loop but can find the method to stop that. Anyone got snybtips?

      Have you tried this

SHIELD Pro or SHIELD TV (2015)
      1. Turn off your SHIELD.
      2. Unplug the power cable from your SHIELD.
      3. Connect your SHIELD to your PC/Mac/Linux computer via USB using SHIELD's micro USB port.
      4. Plug the power cable back into your SHIELD.
      5. Wait 2 seconds, and then hold the NVIDIA power button on SHIELD for 5-6s until you see the fastboot menu on the display.
      6. Tap on NVIDIA button to move on Menu to "Boot recovery kernel".
      7. Hold NVIDIA button to for 2-4s to select "Boot Recovery Kernel".
      8. You may see the dead Android robot on screen. This is expected behavior.
      9. Hold NVIDIA button to for 2-4s to process to next menu. If you don't see the Recovery menu, try this step a few times.
      10. You will see Android Recovery Menu.
      11. Tap on NVIDIA button to move to "wipe data/factory reset".
      12. Hold NVIDIA button to for 4-6s to select "wipe data/factory reset".
      13. After process select "reboot system now".
      14. SHIELD will boot to home screen.

      • Not yet but thank you for sharing this.

    • You should be able to download new firmware to the device. Firmware is on NVidia's website.
You can PM me for help if you want!

I'm trying to decide to either go with the shield or a Panasonic UHD player. The UB400/420 series are dearer but have the advantage to play discs, sometimes I would prefer to have the best quality UHD versions of my favourite movies.

Can the Panasonic UHD players play 4k hdr video file formats off local network?

  • This or XBOX One X for best streaming and overall device?

  • For $279.65 you can get one with the controller, remote and nvidia shield TV

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/nVidia-Shield-TV-Box-Android-Sma…

    • That was only $270 before the price jackup.

  • The only thing lacking on the NVIDIA Shield is the lack of Dolby Atmos support on Netflix and no HDR support on YouTube. Otherwise the best media player on the market

    • Anywhere that Harvey will price match?

  • Unsure if I got lucky but I just realised my Shield is coming via express post when I checked out with standard post. Props to the seller!

    • +1

Mine came in two days… :D

      • Sweet! Mine came today. Can't believe it took me this long to get one. PLEX streaming has never been sexier.

        • I never used plex, what is it all about?

        • @Jimmy007:

          tl;dr media server

Long answer: it's a program/server you run on your PC (other NAS/other). You add cough media you've acquired cough and it builds a library. You can access the server from anywhere as long as it's online.

        • @Dagmar: lol got it. I Just watch online instead.

  • Finally bought a Shield, thanks for this deal that I couldn't pass up. After buying a FireTV stick, upgrading to Mibox and then Shield I am pissed at myself for being so cheap and putting up with those under powered boxes for the last few years. I know now that the source of my issues (especially with iptv) is low memory causing freezing.

The better remote, gigabit ethernet, double usb, solid IPTV performance and improved power makes a massive difference to everything I do on it. I use my Mibox a lot but its getting relegated to the bedroom.

And its a device with a proper Aussie plug! Loving it.
