Coles & Flybuys - How Best to Use The Program?

Hello,

I'm a regular visitor but not an often poster!

I've been trying to 'play' the Flybuys game by limiting my visits to Coles once the emailed targeted offers are getting too high.

Today I received an offer from them of 13200 bonus points for a $220 spend. Is this point offer normal for this level of spending?

What offers have you received to get you back in their stores?

  • Their offers differ from account to account depending on how much is spent in their stores which they track when you scan their loyalty card, and some offers are the same

You don't need to limit your visits just use a different card. If you're spending a lot it's highly likely you have a partner who can have a card too.

Just use them strategically. Use one for the 4 week offer spending only what is required and very little more. I take a notepad and pen around the supermarket with me adding everything up until I hit the spend requirement. In my case $50 then go to the checkout and put it all in the car. If you need more then go back and spend more but don't use any card and don't use the other one at all during those 4 weeks. After a month it'll look like you've deserted Coles and they'll tempt you back with a nice easy to meet $50 spend requirement. Make sure you don't exceed it by much. You can also ask the checkout operator to stop once you've hit $50 and then pay for that then scan the rest of the groceries and pay again.

    • Shopping list apps are also good for keeping a tally on your spend as you go. But sometimes it's not convenient to juggle a delicate phone and a handful of items. Clumsy people may want to stick with paper. :)

    • I have been getting the $50 x 4 for 10,000 points regularly for over a year. On the card I use for the offer I only spend just over the $50. Usually I have a few more items to purchase and I just tell the operator to stop at the $50 and purchase the rest using another flybuys card. I used to say that the rest were for my neighbour but now I do not bother, the operators really do not seem to be concerned that I do 2 separate transactions. I do try not to use the same credit card for both transactions as I wonder if they can track this. I use a giftcard (5% off) for one and flybuys dollars for the other.

You're being gamed by an algorithm that tries to ramp up your spend. You need to game it. That means abstaining from spending on a card until the threshold comes down. That's where a second card comes in. Also turn off image display on their emails as they put trackers in there to see if you have read the emails.

    • Also turn off image display on their emails as they put trackers in there to see if you have read the emails.

I've wondered about this. But what can they infer if you view it, and even activate that offer, but you don't actually buy the item. Wouldn't that mean that they won't target you on an up-sell of a product or product class you weren't interested in, so next time they'd try something you may be more interested in buying?

      • It's just one less piece of information for them. The tracker is on the email, not the products in the email.

I've noticed the algorithm is getting desperate about what to recommend me as I only buy a narrow range of products from Coolies. So even that brand of washing powder I bought years ago keeps coming up.

Have an account for every adult member of the household and use a different email address for each account.

Only spend the target amount, as mentioned in comments above.

$50 is a decent target, $220 is too high a target.

The rewards don't increase with the target they ask you to spend.

The 4 week offer I get is $50 spend each week for 10,000 points. The above offer you've received sounds generous but it's around the same target and reward that I would get over 4 weeks rather than one week. Yes, it's a higher reward and a higher target but not by much.

There is a change recently with Flybuys. It offers 20-30% points rebates for $100+(more likely than $100-) spend in one shop, just like the offer OP got.

That explains the lack of $70 for 2000 points since August and the two $110/6600 points I got in the space of a week …

You might get additional 1k pts from the offer in the flybuys APP booster.

        • @Neoika: Haven't had any boosters for a while! Used to have a steady stream of triple points/$90 for 500 points spend for about two months until August

  • Yes it is tracked by your previous spends.

You will receive such an offer a day or two after your last shop.

I spend about $80-$90 on a shop, they will send me 2 days later an offer 4400 points for a $110 spend. Of course I have just done my shop so pretty useless which is the whole idea, but they are tempting me into spending more out of my usual routine.

  • Merged from Best Strategies to Collect FLY BUYS

    Hi Guys,

I'm new to this whole Fly Buys thing (I only collect QFF).

I recently discovered the Flybuys shop and was wondering if anyone has any strategies to boost your points (shopping alone at Coles and Kmart won't cut it)

    Thanks xx

    • Go here and click Subscribe, to be notified of any new Flybuys deals.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/flybuys.com.au

You can now also link FlyBuys to eBay. See Long Running deals above.

    • sign up to coles home insurance. coles motor insurance. coles life insurance. coles credit card.

    • eBay is where I get the most. Become an eBay plus members (gives you $1 = 1 point rather than $2 = 1 point). Wait until there's really good Flybuys Deal (occassionally 10x or even 20x) and stack it with existing eBay discount code & cashrewards. Buy something really expensive that you need.. if nothing, find used things that can be re-sale at equal price at least I suppose.

  • Sorry to revive a thread - just wondering if there is any way of 'auto-activating' offers through fly buys? It seems like they are constantly putting these little stupid offers up….
