McDonalds won't let me claim more than one Monopoly instant win food prize?

Hi, went into McDonalds NSW Fairfield (Court Rd) Today

All staff are saying (including manager) that you can only claim one instant win food prize per person per day. They said it says it in the FAQs and terms and conditions of the website. They said this with an extremely righteous attitude and ignored us at the counter (the manager on duty said they would go get their superior, then never got back to us and wasted our time).

Also while driving through, they said you can't claim a prize without making a purchase.

Question is - does it say anywhere in the terms and conditions that you can only claim one per person per day? I thought the wording was something like one per order (nothing stopping you from making multiple orders), or am I in the wrong? They were completely ADAMANT these were the rules.

Very unhappy with my experience here, but was hoping if you could shed light on whether I have a right to be frustrated.

Thanks Ozbargain.

    You seem to be right…

Only one (1) Instant Win Food Prize may be claimed with each Order. Instant Win Food Prizes may
    only be redeemed once

…but I'm not reading through all 72 pages.

Should have brought up the terms and conditions on your phone and argued with them while livestreaming it online for us to watch.

Have you tried reading the terms and conditions?
Or are you too lazy and want us to read them for you?

      I just copy paste here.

      • How do any of the terms you posted relate to this issue?

Also, I showed the manager the terms on the phone (the claiming food prize section). They just walked off.

        Thanks.

          A.K.A. They don't give a shit.

Had that rejected too myself from last year's monopoly. I was told only per order, per day. Not gonna argue that. So I came back to the restaurant 5 mins later donning a moustache & a burqa.

          donning a moustache & a burqa

          the moustache was likely unnecessary…

        • +2

@SBOB: but to truly fit the character, the moustache needs to be there under the burqa even if not visible.

Yes, didn't see it anywhere. Just not sure about the interpretation or whether I missed anything.

Don't ever return. Don't ever buy Macca's again.

It's not worth it. You're stressed, hungry and upset.

Just take your valued business elsewhere.

I'm being serious. Is it really worth it? What did you buy and what did you pay for it? Could you have got those items elsewhere? Could you have just gone to the supermarket and bought a higher quality product. I mean if you bought Coke from a syrup mix for instance the supermarket Coke out of a bottle is far better. It's still Coke just much better. And…the fries. Really. They're so easy to make or cook yourself. Macca's fries are just frozen fries cooked in a particular oil.

Or is it for the experience. The kids play area. The free newspaper. The chance to get out and a family day out. Is that worth all this stress and frustration you're now feeling not getting your free item?

    • Its a tryhard OzB'er. You can't stop em.
They need their daily calories intake.

  • Don't get me started on MickyDs. The Cheltenham store is a joke. They don't have any staff at night at cash register only this staff member who point you to the dam ordering screens. Its quicker she says. Not if you enter it and it doesn't work. Wait to get served at register. No one comes. Staff member just waiting at order screens. Walked out.

As for the OPs issue. Terms are conditions are generally clear and the stores need to comply with conditions. If you checked can show that the conditions are not as they say then they should obliged. Lucky I haven't got sucked into the Monopoly thing. The Coles Minis was bad enough.

The terms state a purchase must be made and do indeed stipulate only one available per order. Moreover they stipulate that they cannot be used in conjunction with any other special purchase or meal (like as along with another voucher or Value Meal deal). It is only the last point I think is a little harsh, as I would think most would purchase food as part of a meal deal and this appears to be strictly prohibited in the conditions.

Think upon it from the point of view of the competition - it is not to do anything but increase purchases at McDonalds. By making it a condition that you get your freebie only when making a new purchase they can be sure of another sale. It has always been this way but may have been selectively enforced depending on the deacons made by each individual store.

Where do terms state that purchase must be made? And where does it say can't used in conjunction. Which terms and conditions are you looking at?

Point "10. Not to be used in conjunction with or to discount any other offer or an Extra Value Meal® or Happy Meal® purchase."

"55. For physical Tickets, subject to Condition 58, an Entrant may, during the Promotional Period, claim the Instant Win Food Prize stated on their Winning Instant Win Food Ticket by handing over their Winning Instant Win Food Ticket to a crew member at a McDonald’s Restaurant at the time of placing or purchasing an order at the McDonald’s Restaurant (“Order”)."

"59. Only one (1) Instant Win Food Prize may be claimed with each Order. Instant Win Food Prizes may only be redeemed once."

        • @lghulm:

Ok, so what in there prevents someone making 2 or more orders? And what did what you say have anything to do with what I posted?

There is nowhere it says a purchase is required. It says you hand over the ticket at the time of placing OR purchasing an order I.e. you can place the order for the item in your instant win ticket then hand over the ticket at the time of placing it.

That makes no sense because there are digital tickets and there are no terms for that. It is obvious that clause was to just say that you hand over your ticket when you make an order.

          @takutox:

Why dont ya try it bro? Order one, come back in 10 mins, repeat, problem solved, move along, dont take the salt shaker with ya. Anger will lead you to the dark side and its bad for ya heart.

@takutox: Er feel glad I went to extra effort for you.

        • +3

@takutox: Incorrect information? It matched what you were told by McDonalds. All terms and conditions are going to come to interpretation. I QUICKLY cut and pasted terms & conditions for you from a multipage document. There are multiple places where McDonalds outlines conditions for the promotion.

For the record, I had previously gone to redeem a free food item myself and thought I'd check. The terms I read told me I needed to make a purchase.

Now it may be, because this was hours later that I replied to you, that when I quickly cribbed a link to HELP YOU, I copied over a DIFFERENT SET of terms & conditions, or ELSEWHERE on McDonalds web properties they outline something a little different. Have you read the terms I attached word for word through the whole document?
How much time do you expect someone else to invest for your petty issue?

And if I am wrong so what? I swear I read it on their site, but it may not be explicitly in this document (e.g. there are other terms written in their app).
What was my intent on responding to you? In linking? In highlighting?

          Trying to resolve your issue?
And you claim I am the obnoxious one?

No mate, not only are you incredibly cheap and self centred YOU are thoroughly obnoxious. So (profanity) You.

Question is - does it say anywhere in the terms and conditions that you can only claim one per person per day?

You could just read the terms yourself.

  • +5

You should take them to the court, I'd suggest the food court.

  • Depends on which McDonald’s you go too, I went to Stockland Merrylands and showed her a free Sundaie on my phone, she just put it and I asked her if I should redeem it, she said I didn’t need too.

    • Dont ya know? Fairfield is a land of bludgers. I lived there before.

  • So instead of reading T&C's, would rather play victim and create a post just to be shown they're wrong and the McDonald's staff are right. Nice work.

Also as mentioned before - it's a yearly marketing scheme. So that's why they have those rules. One claim per person per day only with an order. Make 90% of them a free sundae or small chips, it would be cheaper to buy the sundae and chips yourself than having to order something to claim it.

  • Just go to a different Maccas. The ones I go to (around the city centre in Sydney) don't knock back the food instant wins in the past week. You can claim multiple at once and they don't force you to buy anything if you don't want to. In all previous years I never had a problem either. Keeping the customer happy keeps them coming back. If your store is making you unhappy, vote with your feet.
