    Thanks, Big Man Tyrone.

  • Good price (although the overall trend of SSD prices are coming down), would be even better as the AUD/USD rate eventually goes up.

  • or slipped inside an enclosure for use as a portable SSD

How do these perform without TRIM in an enclosure?

What is the quality of these ssd drives compared to the normal brands

      worse

I have one, and it's fine… but given that the WD and Kingston drives have had similar pricing lately - It's hard to recommend these.

      • +2

My thoughts too. Was a great price until WD and co started competing, now there's not much price difference.

  • The orico enclosure works really well

It's only been pretty recently where I've believed SSDs have finally begun to be "cheap" and it's a good thing

    • SSD prices have followed XMR / USD? :)

Crucial MX500 and Samsung 860 Evo 500GB have hit $130AUD recently and are among the best sata SSDs…worth saving $37? Tough decisions

  • I've tested[1] my unit exaustively, and only in two tests - in a +30 universe - it came close as the advertising.

Tried with differents SOs and versions, differents tools and all the results were the same.

Maybe my unit was defective, but looking others s800 owners benchmarks[2][3] just confirmed my findings.

I've opened my s800 and found the following components:

    • SMSM2258G controller
    • H5TC4G63AFR-PBA 4Gb dram
    • VS29F04TEME1 nand

Except dram, it's the same specs as the tc-sunbow x3 and, if you look at the benchmarks[4][5], numbers are pretty much the same.

    • It's important to remember that the speeds advertised by Ramsta are the maximum. Or another way of putting it is up to. This means you won't get exactly 562.4 MB/s seq. read.

Same could be said about any SSD though.

      • Don't wanna be rude, but I have/had other ssds and they easily achieve the advertised max r/w speed, or at least come close to.

        There is a distance between 332/319 MB/s and 562/468 MB/s.

        • That is true with top tier brands with Samsung. There are always sacrifices with cheaper brands and people should know that. Or at least OzBargainers do 😉😉😉

@Clear: Just to make clear, the ramsta s800 is not an awful ssd. I'm upset by the misleading advertising. There is no way to reproduce the result shown in the product page.

I do not expect to cheaper brands make top tier ssds, but I do expect them to be honest about what they are selling.
